How to Sew French Seams

- French seams are a rather fancy way of creating a lovely, neat finish to your garment. What they do is enclose the unsightly raw edges of the fabric within a neatly stitched secret cavity, never to be seen again… or that’s how I like to think of them!
They work really nicely on light- to medium-weight fabric, but not so great on heavier fabrics where they'd create bulky seams. They’re particularly useful on sheer fabrics as they look less conspicuous than overlocked seams. The strength of the seam also makes them practical for clothing that’s going to go through the laundry a lot. Plus they just look awesome :)
I’ll be doing a demo on the Jaimie pyjamas pattern from Tilly and the Buttons. You can also use them on blouses, dresses, underwear… you name it!
By the way, don’t worry that the millimetres to inches measurements I give in the video don’t translate exactly into each other. It still works! When translating measurements, we often need to round them up or down to avoid giving fractions like 5/16in which are a bit difficult to follow ;)

Just stumbled across your channel. Haven’t sewn for years, but you have inspired me! Thank you for sharing!
You are such a great teacher and make it look very easy. This is one of the many reasons i love sewing your patterns!
An excellent demonstration thank you.
Thanks, very clearly demonstrated. Love the fabric 😍
Thank you for a very nice tutorial. The pretty fabric will make cute pj shorts!
Thanks , nicely done, I must give it a try 💕🧵✂️
If you are going to do french seams, wouldn't you need to adjust your pattern cutting for the increased seam allowance that would be needed? Because you are basically doubling the seam allowance, correct?
DLN1 you don’t need to adjust the seam allowance because you use approximately half of the seam allowance (usually 1,5 cm) at each of the two steps. In the video Tilly uses about 7 mm for every seam. Hope this helps!
Thank you Tilly
Thanks for showing how it done.... 💜💜💜🧵🧵🧵
Thanks will try this method.
A useful video, thank you. What if the seams on the pattern are only 3/8ths though? Is it possible to use French seams?
I'm sure you've gotten your answer by now, since it's almost a year later, but you can add additional seam allowance to your pattern. Cut the pattern a bit further out than it calls for. =)
Again genius
That is great
How do you french seam the crotch seam? is it done the same way? Is it easy to french seam a curve? Straight seams are dead easy but I'm uncertain about sewing a sleeve in etc. show us that please

Are you using the edge of your presser foot for both passes of the seam? Is that because the 1/8 inch difference is barely noticeable?
Quick, easy instructions without 45 minutes of pointless female banter covering pointless things.
THANK YOU!!!!!
