    Wow Mmeronek this has been what I've been looking for! I've played piano for 13 years and just in the last couple of years had to stop for school and other things. And I've found that more recently I've had more time to pick playing back up! Towards the last few years of playing I was studying how to play more "jazz"like and I found myself at every piano practice asking my teacher for more and more chords to play because I couldn't get enough of that rich sound and now I've came across you on RUclips and the videos with your tutorials have made playing a much more grand experience! Thank you so much! I hope to see more tutorial videos soon, your perspective brings such a new angle to playing! :)

    Mmeronek I think you should also do a few advanced videos based on the theory for this kind of stuff, you could talk about comping, responding to the soloist, alt chords etc...
    Although your audience is often new to this sort of thing, I'm sure they would still be interested

    • @mmeronek
      @mmeronek  10 лет назад

      Yeah my videos are going to get more and more into theory as we go along, it's really just a matter of time. I really started from the very beginning, with someone knowing nothing about piano at all, so there is a foundation for the rest of my lessons, but I will have to tackle more chord progressions and different types of chords in my next lessons.

    Why are you explaining to these dorks as to why you're laughing? It just shows that you're emotionally attached to what you're doing. I've been at the home and studio of one of the top contemporary jazz keyboardist recording artist in this genre and he does the same thing when he was playing and while we were listening to the album tracks. That's why these "left brain" cats can't play. It took me less than 10 minutes to grasp and play this. Thanks man for your efforts; this is the stuff that I do anyway, so it gave me some more "tools" in the shed.@Mmeronek-Pianobreaks. Sorry about your anxiety/depression issues. I honestly can't as you said relate at all to this; because that is so foreign to me; but music is therapy. Rock on man, rock on!!!

      Basically whenever you are going from one minor chord to any other minor chord, this acts as a buildup for the other chord.

    good video. I would lov to be explained why which chords/keys are played Can anyone tell me?

    • @martialway100
      @martialway100 6 лет назад

      I'll try to help your request. Starts off using a standard 'full' D Minor 11 voicing in left hand (from root position) i.e. DFGAC. The right hand broken chord structure is based on the modal D Dorian scale (derived from the C major scale) e.g. DEFGABC. First broken 'arpeggio' style chord EAE (9th,5th,9th) ; Second : FBF (3rd, 13th, 3rd) ; Third GCG (11,7,11) ; Fourth ADA (5,1,5) ; Fifth BEB (13,9,13). Then into CFAbC with accompanying Eb Minor 11 (also in root position) i.e. EbGbAbBbDb and alternating right hand between Bb and C i.e. CFAbC & BbFAbBb. That's the basic format, but then expands into minor pentatonics, modal scales and minor scale improvisation e.g. F minor pentatonic, F minor scales and Eb Dorian, over the Eb minor 11th in the left hand. The pianist also utilises the Eb Dorian modal scale (similarly derived from a major scale) e.g. EbFGbAbBbCDb in the latter part of the video, to create the broken chord structure, identical to the D minor variation. 'Mirroring' in a different key.
      Other consonant minor pentatonics useful for improvising on Eb minor 11 e.g. Eb & Bb. Hence, Eb, F & Bb correlate to the I, II & V minor pentatonics on a minor 11, or other minor chord variations e.g. 7, 9, 13, etc.. Consonant major pentatonics on Eb m 11 e.g. GbMaj, AbMaj, DbMaj (III, IV & VII on Eb Dorian scale).
      Hope this info. provides some insight into the basic structure and extra ideas for improvisation.

    hi! excuseme.. when can i use that lick? can i use it on a ii v i progression? or thats a modal lick

    • @mmeronek
      @mmeronek  8 лет назад +3

      +cesays16 Sure. It's a modal lick as it is, but you can change it to Dmin 7th G7 and C Major 7th instead of the Eb Minor 7th that you're playing in this example.
      To do that, just play:
      D F G A C, D F G B, Then C E G B
      in your left hand, and
      When you resolve to the last chord, play
      E G B E in your right hand.
      You can also add D E G B, and B D E G after that to make it sound good too. Hope that helps, I tried playing it and it sounded great!

    What scale would you recommend soloing to whilst using this lick?

    • @mmeronek
      @mmeronek  8 лет назад +1

      +phannes00 These licks are based on D dorian (all white keys) for Dmin7, and Eb dorian (Eb F Gb Ab Bb C Db Eb) for Ebmin7. On each chord you can play its respective scale. And you don't need to switch chords as quickly as I do here, you can just play over D dorian for a little while, and then switch to Eb dorian, it's really fun.

    stop laughing man, its not funny i can't play it :'(

    • @mmeronek
      @mmeronek  10 лет назад +7

      I'm obviously not laughing at you, and sure if you're just watching this you probably can't play it... yet anyways. You need to learn it and practice it first until it becomes comfortable for you to play it slowly, and then later make it faster and faster until it almost becomes second nature. It's a very linear process and is much like improving in any other skill, but you still have to learn the whole thing and practice it until you become comfortable with it.

    • @mmeronek
      @mmeronek  10 лет назад

      Mmeronek and I mean linear in that there are obvious things that you have to do, like learn the actual lick with all the notes in it by heart and practice it slowly, but that doesn't mean you can't improve exponentially too.

    • @mmeronek
      @mmeronek  8 лет назад +2

      +Ashley Frank I tried my best honestly. I can't hide that I suffer from anxiety and depression, and sometimes it comes out in ways like that, the coughing while I'm playing and the kind of laughter that I have. I can't all of a sudden wave a magic wand and stop being depressed though, I've tried my best to get better from it in myriad methods for many years and not succeeded, I just now try my best not to let it get into my teaching.
      Sometimes you just have time constraints on when you're creating the lesson so you can't redo it if it comes off that way, and in these lessons I was trying something more informal, and it worked well in some areas, while it didn't work in others, where it comes out as not caring or cockiness, which I think the cockiness is a reaction in my personality to the depression and anxiety. The laughing is a nervous tic too, you will also hear it while I'm playing, it sounds like coughing, but it is also enjoyment of what I'm playing coming out and I just can't express it.
      That's why you'll hear both exhilaration with being able to play the lick that I am feeling, which is essential to teaching it to convey the excitement that it brings me so it can bring you the same, and that's mixed in with my nervousness and sometimes cockiness when it comes out that way. I tried my best and I think by the end of the lessons if you watch them, you will see that whatever flaws it has from that are far outweighed from the other 90+% of when I'm teaching and not being that way and what you get from the lessons as a whole, because I tried to keep it out as much as possible (while also trying a new way of teaching that is more informal).
      I really don't see how I can get rid of it though, as long as I have anxiety and depression, which again I've tried to get rid of for many (7) years, so I think you need to understand the whole story. If you or anyone else you know has suffered from depression or anxiety, I think you will understand.
