If you aren't sold on doing a GSP back wall (I think you'd have issues with too much green compositionally, with an apparent depth contraction since bright green is going to pull forwards due to shear saturation while also visually 'yanking' color saturation from the other corals) but still are interested in having a black background, consider a Kydex (or similar) background sheet. You can just pull it out & acid soak it in a bucket once coralline grows on it. Get 2 and you can just put a fresh one in the display, set the dirty one in the acid solution & forget about it until you need to swap them again. Figured it was worth mentioning as a consideration, quick "kydex reef tank" google search speaks to the results on its own.
Thank you so much for this info. From a quick Google Search, it seems like public aquarium uses this material in their aquarium so it should be safe . Let me try to find more info on how people typically attach this to the backwall. I am thinking even 2 strong magnets at the top may do the trick with the bottom jammed into the sand. Only tricky part is maneuvering this into the tank w/ the eurobrace & output nozzles. Would make for a fun DIY project!
@@InappropriateReefer The sheets are semi-rigid but still maneuverable at thinner thicknesses (I used 0.028" myself) so you shouldn't have issues getting around the eurobrace/nozzles or coral colonies. I don't think you'll even need the magnets with it in the sandbed but some floating magnets that can't get lost placed above the waterline wouldn't hurt anything.
Very nice Sir, thought to chime in since so many folks are mentioning I should check out your latest update. Keep up the good work, I see the Moonshiners results pretty much all over the tank having positive impact ;-) More to come, great job on the Video, I still working on my Video skills.
Thank you Andre, I really think the Reef Moonshriner's way to managing trace elements took this tank to the next level and got it ready for the SPS world -- Thank you! [Im]patiently waiting for the info you are about to drop on your videos!
I blame you for making it easy to order the nitrate checker 😅… thanks for the link, I just ordered and looking forward to try it as well, oh and great video as always!!! 😁
I have the same Hanna HR Nitrate checker I like it also ! There are two types of corals I am trying to grow up the back of my DT. Monty Cap but I feel they might need too much flow to grow large enough. Pulsating xenia which I like the texture or flow/movement seen on the back. The color won’t detract from other corals and easy to remove.
Wow! Things are looking amazing! You could also try some Stylos and or Caliendrum/Guttatus birds nest corals! There are some nice pink, teal, and blue color morphs that look amazing!
I have some branching GSP. Never gave it much thought. It was getting big and trying to grow on some of my other rockwork so I decided to cut it back some. I contacted my local fish shop (2.5 hours away) about see if they wanted some. They did. I got 10 x 1.5 inch frags off the mother colony. The shop gave me $10 each frag. SCORE! I was thinking of using some small frag racks and growing out some Cyphastrea and chalice in the back corners
Tip for the reagent, don't fold it in half, that's why the powder sticks. Just leave it flat, cut along the line and the powder flows out perfectly. Works every time for me. Thanks for the video.
The electronic testers are nice like a lot of other videos here on RUclips a lot of the guys say after about a year they don't work right or they don't work at all
I was thinking of placing a piece of egg crate on the back wall of my frag tank and growing GSP on the egg crate. Then as I want, I can cut off sections of the egg crate and sell off the GSP frags.
Of course! There is a free handbook you can download here: andremueller.e-junkie.com/product/1620933 (you do need to add to cart and "check out"), it tells you the whole concept behind it. Essentially it is a way to individually dose the different trace elements your tank may be lacking based on ICP tests. There is also a Facebook Group here: facebook.com/groups/1755992217822887
Have you heard of, or used Aquaspin? It tests all parameters excluding specific gravity. You give great reviews and would like to know your thoughts. Thanks!
Only issue is par on the back wall. Even though I have 600 par directly on the back wall is only 150. I have orpheks and ocean revives up high with a lot of coverage. I use the nyos but love Hannah as well .
When you fold it in half, you can push the air bubble inside the packet to the edge that you're cutting and wiggle it about, which helps to remove power along the seam.
I wished Hanna would let you trade in your low range for the high range because I think a lot of people were kind of misled into thinking it was something it was really not. I will wait until buying it because mine is above 25 and so it won't matter much.
They posted instructional videos and all information on how that checker worked online before it was available to purchase, so I'm not sure how they could have misled anyone. I knew before I bought it how long a test would take and how involved it was and still decided to buy it. It would have been nice to know they were releasing a HR but I get the impression they actually went back to the drawing board after the LR wasn't the checker people wanted - I think they thought we wanted super accurate numbers and high precision, whereas really we're okay with some wiggle room as long as it's an easy to produce digital read out.
Can you do a video on your sump and what you're dosing (excluding mooonshiner). I know you're dosing kalk, I'm curious what you're dosing on top of it and how much. I'm doing a similar thing
I think he is around 1 - 1.5 year old! This particular guy grew up very, very fast in this tank. The pervious hippo I had in my 45g's growth rate was way slower, may be due to the smaller tank size, he was in no hurry to get larger!
It takes like 13-17 minutes to accurately measure with the Hanna Nitrate Checker! It was such a hassle especially getting the powder out of the packets. I’m switching to NYOS color titration test kits for nitrate.
@@Botzz28 the last step was to shake it before putting it back in the Hanna checker but sometimes it would be clear and other times the solution would go into the Hanna checker as bright pink/purple. Also sometimes the Hanna checker would wait 7-8 minutes before giving a result while sometimes it would read an instant result. I was so confused and frustrated to be honest. I wish Neptune Trident could also automatically test for nitrates since they already test alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium.
Technically their low range could also test for higher range, there just needs to be an extra dilution step which makes the already complex process even more complex. It looks like by giving up the 0-5ppm range, their high range checker could be used much easier... I'm all for that!
I have a Rose Bubbletip Anemone, typically BTAs like to find a deep crevice to bury their foot, and then reach out upside towards the light. They seems to prefer low/medium flow and medium light. Knowing this I try my best to start them off in a location like this, and isolate them on an island rock. Although they do have the ability to let go completely and float somewhere else, I have had pretty good luck. Supposedly feeding them after they newly settled into a spot would help convince them to stay put as well.
I have a similar issue. 😂 My NO3 is ~30 ppm. I am going to leave it there and see if it comes down naturally, if not, I understand that carbon dosing (eg: NoPox) may be one way to do it.
Tuxedo Urchins will strip that coraline down. I personally grow encrusting Montipora and Zoas on my back wall, mystic sunset/reverse Superman being the fastest of the 3.
Dude i just picked up some POTO Exosphere, Stratocasters, Bengal tigers and JF Kung Fu Fighters that look amazing. If you're ever back in the NJ area, hopefully they'll be grown out some and I'll frag some for you
We got a Zoa Collector in the house! Thanks for the offer man, I'll grow mine out and continue to collect as well - we can do a little swap when the time comes! NJ is pretty close by. ☺
I wonder if it was because the one I had was not seated inside the crevice (the foot is exposed due to how the clam attached to the little rock). Either way, I moved all the Bumble Bees and even Nassarius Snails into the refugium just in case...!
@@InappropriateReefer ....snails will eat them as soon as they die. The foot not attached properly definitely will cause anything to attack it.
