My grandfather was in Korea from 1951 to 1953 in the Greek army under the US 7th Cavalry div as an infantryman. He may have been part of this battle he would never talk about it, he would also sleep with his eyes half open he is my hero RIP papou.. All the greeks were volunteers in the UN army

My grandfather was a Commando for 4 years, that was the term back then, my dad 4 years also... We, first and foremost, are born soldiers and we die as soldiers... We just choose what to do with our lives in the meantime... Korean war is a controversial matter for Greek history. Most Greeks will always disapprove of engaging in foreign land conflict. Especially for political and financial reasons. That's the difference of a "soldier" to a "troop". We give our lives instantly to defend our land and loved ones... Not to harm others, abroad. That's why he hold this land-the most strategic dot on the planet- for 5000 years... That's why we don't hold any other elsewhere...
I'm German and my husband is Greek. He didn't like his military service and talked about his military training as something a bit ridiculous. Then one day I asked him if he would go out and fight for Greece in case of an attack and with no hesitation he said he'd die for Greece. I've never met a German who said the same about Germany.
In the begining of 20th century greek soldiers was the best soldiers on the world. They fougth in 1" Balkan war, 2" Balkan war. Macedonian war 1 and 2 for thowing Slavs out of Macedonia. Asia minor wars. WW one, WW two, greek civil war. Those greeks soldiers who fougth in Korea, hated communists, and they wanted to fight against Them.

196 Greeks were killed in Korea. Over 600 injured. Monuments stand to this day in each country mentioning the sacrifices both countries made. Had relatives head over there and serve. They never spoke of what happened there. It was too much for them once the topic came up.

They were cleaning and sharpening bayonets, besides the main rifle cleaning, 'cause blood and body fluids corrode and dull them if left just wiped!
