I wish you would give a disclaimer on using Whatnot. A lot of your viewers are novices to the numismatic hobby and should be warned that Whatnot does NOT offer the same security and customer support eBay and other larger platforms do. Their customer support ratings are abysmal and they often offer as little as 1% compensation on lost or never delivered items.

Nothing embarrassing about not knowing everything. What would have been embarrassing was if you defiantly disagreed with ever slab and were whining about the cleaned/scratched grades. You set a good example for the community by being humble about not being perfect. Cheers

The 3 easiest ways to tell if a coin is cleaned are: First look for overall luster impairment. Second look for hairline marks anywhere on the coin either localised or overall. Third if a coins wear patterns require age to create but the coin exhibits a "bright" appearance (gold is different) the coin is likely cleaned. There are further methods to determine surface conditions but these are the best to learn for on the spot grading. As far as scratches go any marks that are not created by reasonable mint process or storage (bags, bins) or average accepted circulation wear is considered damaged. Therefore a scratched coin receives a holder but no straight grade. Its all about a forensic analysis of the coin its not personal. These Details grades can sometimes not effect the value of a rare coin. Other times with many coins the value can be reduced by 25-30% less than a numerically graded coin. Cheers and happy hunting!

A scratch is damage, damage is not gradable. Yes “bag marks” are technically damage as well but they occur naturally to a coin through normal handling. Scratches occur from improper handling of a coin. That’s why one is gradable and one is not.

I think a scratch affects the grade because the old idea was that the grade should, in theory, be so consistent that a buyer could buy a coin of whatever grade sight unseen and have a good idea of what he was getting. A grade of x with a scratch would only disappoint a buyer who expected an x graded coin in good shape for grade x. And, PCGS can't just give the coin a lower grade and release it because someone wanting that grade also probably doesn't want a scratch version of that grade.

Main thing with scratched coins is that it is not desirable. It's not like a bag mark. Say, if a MS62 coin has a scratch, you can't just lower the grade and call it AU58 if it's still UNC. YET chances are a MS61 coin will still be more desirable than a 62 with a scratch. For PCGS to call it details scratch, it would have to be a significant scratch that significantly detracts from the overall appeal of the coin to the point that it is no longer problem- free and hence can only be given a "unc details" grade. Mind you, a high grade scratched coin will still be worth more than a lower grade one. You really need experience to identify problem coins.

You didn't make money because you graded them, you made money because you bought them for less than they were worth. Perhaps you should check with a coin dealer and have him pre screen so you don't spend money buying or sending in cleaned/damaged/or low grade coins. Your A.U, 10 dollar gold is obviously A.U. and could be sold as raw. After all you bought it raw:) Glad you had fun and I enjoyed your video, just feel bad watching you throw lots of money out for little results. A good 20 power glass would have shown you the scratches and cleaning marks.

For example...I submitted 3 Proof/Mint Coins several months ago that came DIRECTLY out of old Mint/Proof Sets that came back as "cleaned"!! I really think that graders ASSUME that if a 100+ year old coin is shiny, it must be cleaned?? Very, Very frustrating!!

The reason why a scratched coin makes it ungradeable is that grading was intended for dealer to dealer sight unseen sales. Anything that would detract from value like a scratch will never come back with a straight grade. Lesson learned, but several of these were blatantly obvious and you should have saved your money on grading. There is a great series of vidoes from PCGS on grading, here is one on why coins come back with no grades. ruclips.net/video/cJKl4bOP9II/видео.html

My Experience with One of the Largest Grading Companies:
I got this one slabbed to protect it from the environment and the critics that inevitably say that it was tampered with This Shinny Sacagawea graded at MS66 Brilliant Uncirculated before I put it on youtube in 2014 and got accused of tampering with it by some coin dealers and some of the big professional coin bulletin boards. I documented their comments about tampering. They were unaware that some of the most prestigious error dealers and grading certification companies had already deemed my Sacagawea coin as real and not counterfeit or tampered with. So the grading companies protected My Discovery just fine, Well worth the whole process and when the Anti Counterfeiting Company showed up following me on my social media I already had the truth established years before the Slammers turned me to them for counterfeiting or tampering with United States Currency:)
