  • Hello everyone,
    Today we start a new series, What's Broken Now Spotlight, having a look at a project from start to finish, rather than our normal flitting between projects.
    We start off with Lawrie's Reliant, in this episode we have a look at what was wrong with the car when it arrived.
    A video featuring:
    Presenter - Lawrie excited to have a look at his new car,
    The help - Trev, roped into helping with another lost cause.
    A video edited by Lawrie.

    Those Rialtos with the little boot are quite rare now. Should have a "yellow top" engine fitted designated with the "E" stamp after the engine number inscribed on the top of the block, below cylinder head on the drivers side. You need to take off that engine cover in the car to see this and a torch would help. These go really well when properly sorted. Looks like a decent, fun project. I'd flush the block out of coolant and start afresh. These alloy blocks are known to fur up around cylinder #4 if people just used tap water. Make sure to use deionised water with blue antifreeze. There's a drain plug on the passenger side near the back of the block. But don't force it... work it gently. It can strip the thread easily, but if it does it's easy to tap a larger thread for a new bolt to act as drain plug. But access is an issue as you will find doing anything on one of these. :p

    • @lmm
      @lmm  2 года назад +2

      Yep it's a yellow top, shifts well enough too!

      A red one was the first Reliant I ever saw, I don't think there's more than a handfull of them in Austria. I saw that in an Aldi car park of all places. As it sped out of the car park, the front wheel lifted clean off the ground! I saw one for sale local-ish last year but it was quite a lot more expensive than Lawrie's (I think somewhere in the 3k range).

    Rialto's, and pretty much every Reliant 3 wheeler model made are becoming very rare now. One of my uncle's owns a Rialto estate that has been sitting in his back garden since about the mid 1990s covered in mould. What's rare about this, and sad really given it's been abandoned since he gave up driving it due to a clutch problem, is that he is the original owner of the car since about 1982. Hopefully one day I'll be able to take a look at it and see how many miles it's done since he stopped driving it. Such ashame it was left like that, but so many owners just neglect them.

    Funny, funny, funny, but the custard on the pie, was the dinky drop down tailgate. I already thought it was compromising the integrity of the shell, having two doors, but why does it need a tailgate? The space it’s accessing, is right behind the seats! Just reach back with your arm. More to come, I hope? PS Must apologise, just realised its got a back seat! The modernity of it. It’s all too much. You’ll be telling me it has a windscreen wiper next.
