Ninja Nerds!
In this lecture Professor Zach Murphy will be teaching you about Compliance and Elasticity. During this lecture we discuss the factors that influence compliance such as surface tension, elasticity of the lungs, the natural flexibility of the surrounding thoracic cage, and surfactant production. We also discusses clinical scenarios when elasticity and compliance is compromised resulting in pathology. We hope you enjoy this lecture and be sure to support us below!

- A medical student
5 years after my MBBS, I really had lost all hope and thought not to persue any post-graduation. But your teaching makes every topic extremely easy and has helped me to regain interest in my studies.
You deserve all my tuition fee, my maintenance loans and my degree man, how in the world did you make this interesting? You are a God sent! God bless you man, you are great 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I am a student respiratory therapist, and let me tell you your videos help me SO MUCH. You are so good at articulating and explaining to where I can understand perfectly. Thank you.
I think this is the absolute best overview of basic pulmonary mechanics I have every seen. It is just plain outstanding to see the Ninja Nerd make some challenging concepts (some which seem counterintuitive at face value) so simple. THANK YOU
I really can't even begin to describe how thankful I am for your videos
Damn, god bless you guys
It's one thing to just blurt out textbook concepts but another thing to _explain_ the concept itself.
Love from India ❤❤😘😘
Thank you so much
I'm from Argentina and I understood everything you said! Thank you so much, your explanation was very clear. You have a great talent at teaching, thank you again for sharing your knowlegde :)
This is a very great video thank you very much! what a teacher!!
But I have one thing that I really need to understand, which is the banana curve of lung compliance (the compliance diagram) that relates the changes of volumes and pressures during both inspiration and expiration.
3 months ago I watched your videos on embryo and aced it. Now I realized that you are well knowledgeable on many other domains with the same amount of understanding. I can't thank you enough for your efforts.
so many people get this wrong, i love how you explain this clearly and compare and contrast the two words, then give examples to when they differ. thank you.
I never realised Physiology can also be made interesting😀
Thank you so much 🙂
Thank you for helping me get through CRNA school! You’re awesome!
Half a chapter on 30 minutes, thank you soo much.
You deserve all tge happiness and health sir i wouldn't understand shit if i didnt fimd this gem of a channel.

The best video on compliance. Makes things crystal clear
Actually very very very beneficial lecture
Would be interesting to see how this relates to having Ehler Danlos Hyper mobility type AND asthma both ( me).
I am so very grateful for ALL of your videos. I have anatomy 1 exam this coming week and I do not know how I could have done without you, you are invaluable!!!

Thank you so much.
That was one heck of a lecture! Saved the day and just made me a more knowledgeable person. Just loved it 💕. Bless Up and make yourself and us proud
thank for this great explanation !!!.. just a small Q is that in the atelactasis the elasticity first increases then as the volume decraeses the compliance increases and the elasticity decreases??..
U got quality content nd explanation....that's the best combination in a teacher :) thank you sooo much!!
Thanks for making things so easy to understand
woah, these pieces of information are high yield 🤩 thank you, Ninja Nerd!
u r the best ,i studied nursing out side usa ,i always dream digging in like what you are doing ,things are easy if you know them well .... but english is pulling back
GOAT of youtube medicine

Excellent video sir
Please make all the lectures head and neck .
Hi ninja. You’re videos are awesome. Very well explained. Easy to understand. Continue to do the good work.😊
Excellent explanation...Thanks teacher for your time and effort...
As always, awesome videos and thank you so much for your work!
Just a correction comment. When you mentioned cystic fibrosis or bronchitis, this leads to obstruction and that leads to increased compliance not decreased compliance like you mentioned, as the compensatory mechanisms are to increased volume. Alternatively, in restrictive diseases like fibrosis, you are absolutely correct with decreased compliance and increased elasticity.
Are you not confusing youself ?
Yes the compensatory mechanism will come into play but to correct wat ?.It is actually to increase compliance that wud have resulted from decreased lung compliance brought abt by blockage by mucus .
really u are a compliance means very high volume of knowlage......thanku so mch...keep doing u r the best
greetings from Bulgaria you are the best
thank you sir, you give very great examples 😊
thanx actually I was about to miss scores in physiology but u help me alot thanx forward much massive love ❤❤
All I do is watch your videos and read Physiology at a Glance
Thanks for the video! I'm a bit confused with the compliance and elasticity of the chest wall, though, since I thought they are kind of in the opposite direction in comparison to the compliance and elasticity of the lungs, but then you said the compliance of the chest wall enables the chest wall to expand just as the compliance of the lungs enables them to expand- thus directing both the lung and the chest wall compliance outwards. Do you see what's confusing me?
lungs tend to recoil while the chest wall tends to snap back out . they are in the opposite direction creating a negative intrapleural pressure.
gods work man, thank you
thanx alllot god bless u ...u made it much easier 🤗🤗🤗
+Russell Mukdad awesome I'm so happy we were able to help!
بهترین استاد جهان❤❤
I'm really grateful for this
you really helped me studying for my exams :'(
Amazing video! Thanks
Hii, I’m still really confused about the relationship between lung compliance and lung elasticity.
Are they directly or inversely proportional?
I’ll be glad if you reply cos i have an exam tomorrow😢
Thank youu
Thank you for your great effort and nice lecture.
Only I have comment that compliance is proportional to CHANGE of volume ( not volume value ) also same note on pressure
I'm finally understanding this, thank you
Compliance (whether of lungs or chest wall) is
Directly proportional to ∆ V
Inversely proportional to ∆ P.
Elasticity is
Directly proportional to ∆ V
Inverslt proportional to ∆ P.
3 things affect compliance:
Elasriciy of the lungs
Elasticity of chest wall
Surface tension.
Lungs:-
* Very compliant.
* Just the right amount of elasticity.
* Compliance of lungs = Elasticityof lungs.
# Pulmonary fibrosis:
Compliance dec. Elastisity inc.
(Restrictive pattern)
# Emphysema:
Compliance inc. Elasticity dec.
(Obstructive pattern)
Patients have low FEV.
Chest wall:-
Compliance = Elasticity
- Dynamic interplay.
# Ankylosing spondylitis
# Kyphosis, scoliosis
# Ossified cartilage of chest wall e.g. old age.
Compliance of chest wall dec.
