    Ninja Nerds!
    In this lecture Professor Zach Murphy will be teaching you about Compliance and Elasticity. During this lecture we discuss the factors that influence compliance such as surface tension, elasticity of the lungs, the natural flexibility of the surrounding thoracic cage, and surfactant production. We also discusses clinical scenarios when elasticity and compliance is compromised resulting in pathology. We hope you enjoy this lecture and be sure to support us below!

    As always, awesome videos and thank you so much for your work!
    Just a correction comment. When you mentioned cystic fibrosis or bronchitis, this leads to obstruction and that leads to increased compliance not decreased compliance like you mentioned, as the compensatory mechanisms are to increased volume. Alternatively, in restrictive diseases like fibrosis, you are absolutely correct with decreased compliance and increased elasticity.

    • @malvinmuchinako7502
      @malvinmuchinako7502 2 года назад

      Are you not confusing youself ?
      Yes the compensatory mechanism will come into play but to correct wat ?.It is actually to increase compliance that wud have resulted from decreased lung compliance brought abt by blockage by mucus .

    Thanks for the video! I'm a bit confused with the compliance and elasticity of the chest wall, though, since I thought they are kind of in the opposite direction in comparison to the compliance and elasticity of the lungs, but then you said the compliance of the chest wall enables the chest wall to expand just as the compliance of the lungs enables them to expand- thus directing both the lung and the chest wall compliance outwards. Do you see what's confusing me?

    • @Shei_82
      @Shei_82 4 года назад

      lungs tend to recoil while the chest wall tends to snap back out . they are in the opposite direction creating a negative intrapleural pressure.

    Compliance (whether of lungs or chest wall) is
    Directly proportional to ∆ V
    Inversely proportional to ∆ P.
    Elasticity is
    Directly proportional to ∆ V
    Inverslt proportional to ∆ P.
    3 things affect compliance:
    Elasriciy of the lungs
    Elasticity of chest wall
    Surface tension.
    Lungs:-
    * Very compliant.
    * Just the right amount of elasticity.
    * Compliance of lungs = Elasticityof lungs.
    # Pulmonary fibrosis:
    Compliance dec. Elastisity inc.
    (Restrictive pattern)
    # Emphysema:
    Compliance inc. Elasticity dec.
    (Obstructive pattern)
    Patients have low FEV.
    Chest wall:-
    Compliance = Elasticity
    - Dynamic interplay.
    # Ankylosing spondylitis
    # Kyphosis, scoliosis
    # Ossified cartilage of chest wall e.g. old age.
    Compliance of chest wall dec.
