In California the 1854 in .44 Magnum is certainly attractive. With the current restrictions on semi-auto AR style rifles in CA I love the idea of being able to have an effective way to keep self defense options open. I just purchased the 686+ .357 Magnum S&W Revolver as a house gun and eventually for concealed carry if needed with a Tucker OWB leather holster. I love S&W reliability, quality and design. On my wish list for sure.
A few (maybe 4) years ago, I decided hunting down your uploads was silly when I could just subscribe. Now, about the 1854---thought you covered it pretty well. And honestly if I was 10 or 15 years younger, I would probably add this to my purchase list.
Been subscribed for years now, Hunter. You always do a great, unbiased job here and I sincerely appreciate that. Excellent review of a very interesting entry for Smith and Wesson. I hope you and the family have a great Easter!
To answer your question, I think a revolver caliber level is a great choice for defensive use. Having the ability to attach lights and ammo holders on the gun, it's a viable option. Additionally, it's a good option in the restrictive states (I live in upstate NY). GREAT CHANNEL!
Seen you video yesterday on The Reason Why You Don’t Review Kimber .. I totally enjoyed watching & at the end of the day honesty is all we have left in this sick big world we all live in .. I subscribed and will be watching all of your videos to come ..
It's really odd I just found your channel today, I've been on RUclips for a long time, and I've been into lever action since the sixties, and 1911 pistols since the later seventies. I'm subscribed now, so hopefully I'll see your stuff more. Have a great day.
Hi Hunter, thanks for another good review. I don't have a lever gun (yet) but I can see their value and would love to have one some day. I think lever guns are the revolvers of the rifle world, not everyone is into them but the ones who are truly enjoy them.
Thank you very much my friend. I always look forward to your comment. Thank you for your support. I can see your point, lever guns are the revolver of the rifle world. I love my ARs but I have more fun with lever guns.
Pistol caliber lever guns give you a large mag capacity and and the ability to quickly send projectiles downrange without the possibility of losing control of your weapon plus the opportunity to use calibers which have great stopping power but less chance of collateral damage from extreme penetration. As a defensive gun they are a really solid choice
I have a 16”Rossi lever gun. With Hornady American Gunner 125 grain 357 I’m getting over 2100 fps. Yeah, I think that would make a great self defense gun. The original assault rifle.
The lever action in 44mag is a good defensive weapon. It's lethal accurate out to 100 yds where it starts to drop and after 200 like a stone. It can pack 2x the muzzle energy at the barrel as a 44mag revolver with the right round. Put a red dot on it and learn to fire/cycle the weapon without lifting your eyes from the optic. With practice you can cycle it in about the time it takes to target something anyway. So if you can cycle/target at the same time you can lay down fire with it. You can's spray bullets with it but it can be fired quicky and effectively in the right hands. I'm pretty sure it's legal in all 50 too. Good video. Subbed
Solid review good set up . I like the forest table talk. I held one at the lgs yesterday and it was nice . Finish was great except for the loading gate as I can see it already rusting in your video and it had wear just from the factory testing. The flat trigger I didn’t like , action was good, sights were great . But 1,800 cad plus 13% tax I gotta pass and grab a marlin instead .
Wow, that is way to expensive for that rifle. I agree the trigger is really weird and takes getting used to. The loading gate had wear on my test sample when I got it. I assumed it was a sample that had been sent out before.
Hunter, I was wondering if you heard S&W just announced this rifle in 45 Colt? I'm stoked because I have a governor model revolver. Great video, keep them coming!
Good day to you, I liked n subbed to your channel, great review, I'm also a fan of lever action rifles, currently shooting a chiappa wildlands classic in 44 mag, wood furniture, n, I put a scout scope on the pic rail the rifle comes with, out of the box beautiful 2.5- 3 lb.trigger, 16.5" barrel, a great all round rifle for where I live n hunt, again, thx for the video, stay healthy and safe, shakyjake out.
I LOVE lever guns. I had to re-sub. RUclips seems to like to unsubscribe me to a LOT of channels…on a regular basis. I bought the Marlin 1895 Trapper, in 45-70 and it is amazing. It is one made since Ruger took over, and it is great. I still did a full tear down, and did an action job, full trigger job with a Ranger Point trigger shoe, took all the sharp edges off(even the Ruger made Marlin still had some sharp edges)…put the RP muzzle brake, and bullet point mag tube end cap on it…and made it as close to perfect as I could. And man, is that sucker smooth and crisp now. I want one in either 44 or 357 mag…curious to check the S&W out now….how do you compare the quality and finish to the Ruger made Marlins?
First of all, I agree. I have had several folks tell me they had to re subscribe. Not sure why but thank you very much for your continued support. Did you get a chance to look over my review of the Ruger made Marlin Trapper? You are right on, Ruger really has improved upon the Marlin line. This S&W is really nice and it is tough to say which is better between the new Marlins and S&W. To me they are close enough you would have to handle both and see. I bought the Trapper from Marlin after the review and I believe it is the favorite lever gun I own. I expect the S&W will be quite successful as well. Mt Trapper review in case you missed it. rangehot.com/new-marlin-1895-trapper-quiet-cannon/
I think why lever guns are becoming more popular is well. There is just the cool factor, and people are seeing all the we need to ban this and that. And people want a lever gun as a back up defense rifle if that ever does happen. And lever guns do fit the bill, there more compact and light, typically hold more than 5 rounds, and they are faster action than most of the other actions out side simi. Now you got companies coming out with them with pic rails and mlock and different tactical stuff so why not.
All excellent points. I had not thought about that but you are right, aside from semi auto the lever gun would be the quickest action. Capacity is generally more than a bolt action rifle and many other platforms other than semi auto.
It absolutely would, but I believe most any firearm would. That illustrates why silencers are so important. Being able to suppress such a report will take much of the edge off the noise it would not be no where as near dangerous to your hearing.
I rarely get notifications for your videos...been subscribed for a long time and have all notifications on...
That is really weird. I will have to look into that. I appreciate you letting me know.
For home defense, any port in a storm, but not my 1st choice. Thanks for the review, good job.
Thank you very much.
I agree it would serve well for home defense bit there could be better options.
Thank you very much for your kind words.

I have not heard of this in .45 Colt but I will reach out to my S&W contact.
I bought this rifle and dropped a monstrum 4x prism sight on it . Nail driver now after getting everything zeroed

Just asking iam a novice, but wouldn't 44 mag be damaging to the ears if shot in a house in a self defense situation❓️
It absolutely would, but I believe most any firearm would.
