Prince Igor, a symphonic poem evocative of the Central Asian steppes, also wrote chamber music, songs, and three symphonies. Among these, the Second Symphony in B minor is the most famous - the third, unfinished, was completed by Glazunov. After sufficiently adhering to classical tradition in the First Symphony in E-flat major, Borodin draws his melodic elements from his country’s folklore and revives the old heroic Russia that he would later evoke in Prince Igor, thus justifying the opinion of Soviet musicologist Stasov, who believed the Second Symphony owes its strength mainly to the national character of its motifs and deserves its subtitle, 'Epic.' The work consists of four movements: From the beginning of the Allegro moderato, a popular theme spans three low octaves without any harmonic support: a heavy phrase followed by a joyful tutti in the high register. This brilliance softens into a new idea derived from the end of the first motif. This cheerful rhythm transitions into a fugue across different orchestral families and regains its roughness. In the development, an incessant rhythm serves as a link between the two themes, which are varied through orchestral colors. This is followed by a Molto vivo, a lively and animated scherzo whose rhythm is only interrupted by a few syncopated melodic movements and punctuated by an episodic Allegretto. The Andante, tender and calm in D-flat major, is traversed by numerous undulating motifs and features a beautiful phrase where measures alternate between three and four beats. The slow movement leads into the final Allegro, built on a previously introduced rhythm, curiously syncopated. The development is enriched with vibrant colors, and the work concludes in a luminous and joyful atmosphere of a folk dance." If I can speak in.absolut terms, then I can say this channel is the best in this platform on posting the so called classical music. Not only the themes but also the interpreters and all that goes with every piece is an impressive work of masterpieces' collecting and a subsequent creative edition. Im totally in debt to CMRR!

Thanks for your work on this great recording. In addition to being a noted chemist, Borodin was also a physician and surgeon. We can be thankful that his amateur's interest in composing gave us some splendid music.

One of the best recordings of this beautiful symphony, along with the recordings by Kubelik and Svetlanov.
Thanks for your work on this great recording. In addition to being a noted chemist, Borodin was also a physician and surgeon. We can be thankful that his amateur's interest in composing gave us some splendid music.
Thank you! I love Borodin, and many other Russian composers! You are great!
