  • At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is the highest point in Tennessee, and the third highest mountain east of the Mississippi. On clear days views expand over a 100 miles. Clouds, precipitation, and cold temperatures are common at Clingmans Dome.

On a clear day, you can see up to 100 miles including seven states from the top of the tower. (Clockwise: Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.) Even on a cloudy, “smoky” day, the view is breathtaking.
For spectacular 360° views of the Smokies and beyond, hike the steep half-mile paved walkway up to the "flying saucer" tower at the top. On clear days, see more than 100 miles. No pets or bikes allowed on the trail to the tower, and it's too steep for wheelchairs.
Clingmans Dome is named after Thomas Lanier Clingman, a former U.S. Senator and Confederate brigadier general from North Carolina, and is located in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. The mountain was originally named Kuwahi by the Cherokee people, which means "mulberry place". In 1859, Swiss-born geographer Arnold Guyot surveyed the mountain and named it Clingmans Dome after Clingman.
Temperatures at the summit are usually 10-25 degrees cooler than where you start your drive in Cherokee. Dress in layers and be sure to bring a jacket, even in summer. The road to the summit is closed December-March due to harsh winter weather and 80 inches of average snowfall, as well as other times for bad weather.
🍃 Along the way to the top, we encounter various wildlife and unique plant species, making this trek a true nature lover's paradise. You'll see the beauty of the forest, the majesty of the mountains, and the serenity of the high-altitude environment. It's an experience you won't want to miss! 🌲

Really neat video! Is Clingmans Dome on the Appalachian Trail?

It's very near. If I remember, it may actually cross the path as you walk to the dome. If I had an extra couple weeks, I would have walked the entire AT after we went up to the dome.

Almost 10'. Since you are the only person who has videography skills that are even fairly close to my skill level although not quite as handsome & manly, I can highly recommend you pick up one of these. It's the future.
