I've lived in Eastbourne all my life, and I'm only just starting to take an interest in my local history. Videos like this make an otherwise dull town much more interesting.

Good to hear. It was fun learning about the history of the lighthouse.

I was stationed at BeacheyHead Lighthouse, and I can remember an entry in the logbook: "The practice of going ashore to collect seagulls eggs will cease forthwith." It was due to a keeper not being able to get back onto the lighthouse when the tide came in, after foraging for Seagull eggs.

Interesting. Looks like that one was built around the same time. Did they cheat and build it on a rock?

If you think this is impressive take a look at the Eddystone lighthouse(s). Really nice video btw.

Great video. I wonder what it would take to knock the lighthouse over. There's must be a limit.

Why did´t they build the ligthouse on the cliff top insted? higer up and cheaper to build.

They did, but it wasn't enough

Good point. The Belle Tout lighthouse was built earlier on the cliff top, but there was a problem with fog obscuring the light. I don't know why it's the case, but they decided that sea level is a better location for a lighthouse.

Ok, but how did they build the dam? That’s what I’m looking for.

Good question. Here's what I found in the book: "Iron sheets were hammered into the soft upper layer of chalk to a height of 8ft (2.5m) above high water. Concrete was used to finish the damn."

And why would a lighthouse be built in the sea below a massive cliff?

If they built it that close to the shore, why not just build it on the shore?

This lighthouse replaced another one on the cliff top nearby. Apparently there was a problem with fog obscuring the light there.

It is saddening that you don’t feel able to use the imperial measurements with which this lighthouse was built but insist upon converting them to metric units that even now few understand and many - certainly most people that I know - absolutely reject out of hand. Britain’s official measurement system is still imperial. Metric units have never been lawfully introduced into Britain but installed illicitly by politicians on pain of imprisonment for those companies that do not comply. Yet intriguingly, you use Sterling which is Britain’s official currency. It would seem that upon being put off with your use of metric measurement, many will not bother to watch further films in this series.

I know what you mean, when the BBC show a wildlife film they say something like, This Jungle is 500km square, means nothing to me, or an Elephant is 3m high, why not say the jungle is 500km square which is about the size of Wales, or the Elephant is nearly as high as a coach,? or as you say just give the measurements in Imperial.
