I think it was mentioned in the 3rd book of the Percy Jackson book series. It was then I knew that Mrs. Dodds was a Fury, not a Harpy. Nice content so far! :)
Also, the reason why Uncle Rick wrote 'The Lightning Thief' was because of his son who had ADHD and Dyslexia who was having trouble in school and the only subject he ever liked was Mythology. Talk about a great dad.
I know! I have never heard a better reason to write something. I also owe my thanks to Rick because reading Percy Jackson when I was 13 made me suspect that I was dyslexic. I didn't end up getting my diagnosis for several years because ignorant parents, but still. I'd still be struggling without any understanding if not for these books. Ellen
Guy Smith they don’t need to. Their food comes from magic plates. You order it in your head and bam: it materializes on the plate. One of Hermes’ kids always gets a pack of M&Ms to burn in the fire as an offering for his father as thanks for the food.
My favorite part of Percy Jackson is how panicked he constantly is, honestly. It's obvious, so obvious that he just isn't prepared for most of the things he does.
Rοςκετmαη I know it’s pretty relatable. Things go wrong in life, the unexpected happens, and we freak out thinking “fuck, fuck, fuck, how the fuck do I fix this?”
Rick Riordan is one of the few people who can sent 3 teenagers(Don't forget Nico) into literal hell and still call it children's book EDIT: In this post I am specifically referring to Tartarus, not the entire Underworld. The Underworld itself is not hell, it is just the afterlife, it is neutral. Tartarus does not represent the whole of the Underworld.
there was Percy, grover, and Annabeth in the lightning thief, there were the Kanes in the throne of fire, and nico, hazel (Dying counts), Percy and Annabeth again (tartarus), and i believe that makes 7 hell visitors and 9 visits (two of which were tourists in one of the funniest scenes in the franchise). Edit: okay i get it i was wrong, you win, this has gotten really old with 7 REPLIES (i counted) correcting me. Edit 2: 8 replies.

In my opinion, The Romantic side of Percy Jackson is very good. It doesn’t happen immediately and it is with a very prominent female character. How they started off as a friends to something more. both bonded over a long period of time. The books have a healthy relationship development.
And it's a good thing it takes so much time, since they are so young at the beginning. Also can we talk about the fact that there's a love triangle done well.
Honestly, I feel like in general Riordan has a really good mix of humor and serious scenes. Like, At almost all of the points where Percy made a Joke I was like "Yeah, id do the same in that situation". Also, to this day probably the best written teenagers I ever read. They actually behave like Teenagers, as seen in Lighning Thief where they sometimes are really just Kids (Lotus Hotel) and they just dont know how the world works. I think thats a great thing and the Reason why those Books are so relatable to many Children/Teenagers even though it is about literal Demigods killing MOnsters.
This really shows when you read some of his other series, example being Magnus Chase. The amount of pure sarcasm and pop culture jokes that are slipped into the books is priceless. And don't get me started on Jack. He's a pop culture reference himself, I swear.
Im sorry. "Verbally abusive step-father". Gabe was actually really implied that he beat percy whenever Sally wasnt home. It was implied in chapter three of The Lightning Theif. It was also implied that Gabe was also physically abusive to Sally as well near the end of the lightning theif when Percy is talking to Sally about using Medusas head against him.
Not to be annoying but Percy explicitly states in the lightning thief that Gabe had never hit him even though he had been threatened to be beaten up by him on several occasions. He did hit Sally though.
That’s the only thing I didn’t like. It’s kinda werid how they just used the Medusa head on him. All they had to do was humiliate him or something. But don’t kill him. That’s my opinion though.
@@devionewilkins8903 ... If I had Medusa's head, I'd have done the exact same thing. Until you're in a situation like that, you will put your current set of morals up higher. When you're in that situation, murder becomes a very welcoming thought to save those you care for.
One of my favorite quotes from The Hero’s of Olympus series: “Correct.” Kekrops sounded bitter, like he regretted his decision. “My people were the original Athenians-the Gemini.” “Like your zodiac sign?” Percy asked. “I’m a Leo.” “No stupid,” Leo said. “I’m a Leo. You’re a Percy.”
Well you know...I've read the Percy Jackson books multiple times over the years and I never really thought about them turning Gabe to stone and selling his body. It was just one of those things where I basically thought "yeah okay, good on them for getting him out of their lives" when they actually murdered him and got away with it.
They live in different moral than normal human, and selly has becoke part of it. Karma is real, if it was in mythologic world, gabe would get his karma soon or later. Percy see it as to punish evil human, and let her mother live in peace. He see it as to protect himself and his mom. When he's on adventure and probably would never comeback doing some dangerous quest his mother would be alone with bastard gabe. I would do the same tho, i will take my punishment from making him vanish later - that maybe what percy thought. Selly also become part of peecy's world as well. Though at first she againts the idea, but she also knew things like this happen in the ancient times when we as human can gave punishment to another human who is evil. She take the chance. I might do the same if i was her.
As someone who grew up binge reading and re-reading both the harry potter and percy jackson series, I've always felt that Rick Riordan's books weren't talked about enough
YES BRO I READ THE HARRY POTTER SERIES LIKE TWICE, WATCHED THE MOVIES LIKE 5 TIMES WITH MY ENTIRE FAMILY, WATCHED ALL THE PERCY JACKSON MOVIES AND AM NOW RE READING BOTH PERXY JACKSON AND THE HEROES OF OLYMPUS SERIES FOR THE 6TH TIME AND DONT FORGET MAGNUS CHASE AND THE KANE CHRONICLES I READ THOSE MULTIPLE TIMES TOO AND ALSO THE TRIALS OF APOLLO ETHWUJSDFE I AM LITERALLY ADDICTED HOW MANY YEARS IN A ROW HAVE I BEEN READING THESE BOOKS
@@nathandh295 I know right. I still have to finish reading HP, but one recommendation for an animated show based on Greek myth is Class of the Titans that used to be shown on Teletoon. It's the reason I read Riordan's books.
I hate to point this out, but Ms Dods is a Fury not a Harpie. *Ms. Dodds* *Harpy* **Pro tip. If you make a correction, you should probably check your spelling** Thanks for keeping me honest out there gang!!
I have ADHD, and I was diagnosed in third grade, about a year before I started reading Percy Jackson. Because of Rick's books, I never ONCE as a child disliked my ADHD. I was proud of it, I loved it, and I thought it made me so cool because Percy and Annabeth have ADHD, and it's what half-bloods have. It makes them more powerful, so it made me more powerful. This is why mental health representation is so important.
When I was diagnosed with dyslexia I was bullied at school and I really loved Greek mythology so when my mom found out about Percy Jackson she ran into my room so exited. As I listened to the audio books I was inspired to try harder at school so I could really read the rest of the series. I became happier making friends at the new school I was at for dyslexic kids. Seeing a character that was like me was so powerful for me and many of my friends.
Lily HD I know this was, like, three months ago, but that’s a neat anecdote. Glad to hear that things got better, and it’s neat to see how the series helped so many readers.
Bro this made me cry. This is so cute and I'm sure exactly what Riordan was hoping for when he wrote the series. I know my sister who had ADHD feels like she has a place in the world of Percy Jackson because of this, too.

@@devyboful well... I would say that the Aeneid is a fanfic about the Trojan War and how Greek gods came to the Roman Empire. But if I say it would be a sacrilege, since it's the most important piece of literature in Latin. It was written about 800 years after Iliad and Odyssey and 500 after the tragedies.
I don't think Annabeth and Hermione are that similar, Hermione is more like: rules, books, good behaviour. Annabeth is more like: That's stupid. Let's do it
Just finished the first PJ book so I can confirm. Hermione was way more uppity and snobbish. Annabeth is way more chill and generally has less self-doubt. Really the only similarities the two have are that they’re the “smart girl friend” of their respective friend-groups.
Completely agree with you on everything, except for your point on Percy and Annabeth. I think they're handled very well, better than Ginny and Harry. Their development feels healthy and realistic, and not out of place. Percy's feelings subtly grow for Annabeth throughout the books, and it's entertaining to see him unknowingly develop these feelings for her. It feels rewarding when she kisses him in the fourth book, and you genuinely believe that they'd die for each other. Heroes of Olympus expands on their relationship in a really great way, and they've become one of my favorite couples in fictional media in general. I understand the weird incest thing, but they clarify that they don't share DNA, and that godly heredity does not work in the same way that human heredity does. You can see in both camp half blood and camp jupiter, it's not taboo for demigods of different godly parents to date each other.
They explain about the dating between cousin things in the first book actually? Don't you think so? As long as i remember they have told us in the first book, that god don't have dna, and demigod can date each other, despite their brother/sister from same house. It told that no one would date or even think about their brother/sister in the same house as an atractive figure bcs that is disgusting. But they don't have any connection between another demigod from another house so that's fine.
thank you! percabeth was extremely well written and (i heard but i’m not entirely sure) based on riordan’s relationship with his wife. it felt really satisfying when they finally got together in the end BEFORE I SAY ANYTHING ELSE I’M WARNING YOU I’M ABOUT TO SAY A SPOILER FROM THE END TOWER OF NERO HERE. DO NOT GO ANY FURTHER IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE SPOILED and i remember crying the moment i read the last “wise girl” in tower of nero because i was so invested in them. i hope we get a short story of them in college but for now i’ll settle for fan fiction
My favorite quote in the whole Rick Riodan series is in Lightning Thief. "And your ADHD, you can't sit still in a classroom. That is your battlefield reflexes. In a real fight, they will keep you alive." Annabeth says as she tries to explain to Percy why his ADHD is a feature of being a demigod, not just a learning disability he has to overcome. For a kid with ADD like me, that quote was empowering. And it carries some real-life truth to it. With ADD, I hate sitting still for very long. I need to move around, I need to do stuff. I can focus.
I have dyslexia and ADHD when I finally learned how to read, reading these books was cool because it said that what I am typically looked down on for is actually something I should be proud of

Depends on how you're comparing it. If it's the movie Harry and Hermione then I agree, it was very awkward. However, the book does 10x better job so I'll have to disagree there. The main reason a lot of people ship Harry and Hermione is because they like Daniel and Emma together, but Hermione was never meant to be as good looking as Emma.
@@jacobgrimstad7423 I can't say I do. It may be because I never finished the books, as for whatever reason Percy Jackson and Co hooked me in a way Harry Potter. Couldn't, but I wasn't a fan of the pairing. Harry and his best friends fangirl younger sister, at least that's how it starts and they don't really have much of a friendship till later. Annabeth and Percy, on the other hand, have a slight rivalry due to their parentage, and Annabeths own flaws with pride and her sort of know it all attitude, while Percy was hurt due to how he was introduced to the Greek world and how rash he could be. Over the course of five books with a lot of bumps in the road they develop a relationship I'd been waiting for since book 3, suspecting since book 2, and happy with throughout book 5 and onwards. And there's some parallels you can make, but even then they feel more meaningful for PJO. For example, in Chamber of Secrets, Harry goes to kill the basilisk and rescue Ginny from its clutches, due to her being his best friends little sister and simply because it was the right thing to do. Percy goes on a quest to rescue Artemis from the titans, but his main reason for going is saving Annabeth, his best friend who he refuses to give up on. The entire point of the quest for him is to save her, going so far as to put aside his own pride and hold the sky so Artemis can fight and keep all his friends alive. I'm not saying Ginny and Harry is BAD, I'm just saying I prefer Percy and Annabeth in every single way.

I Love Alphonse Elric yeah lol lots of petitions but many people don’t believe it they’ll never be over the movies so much they are refusing to get their hopes up because “what if they get it wrong like last time” Rick this time will make sure they’re accurate Disney bought over fox rights and Netflix is making original tv show of it
the percy jackson series honestly deserves the same level of acclaim harry potter did but because the movies flopped so hard, no one gave it a second thought. this is why i'm hoping it'll be picked up for an animated series, which isn't exactly in the same league as the harry potter movies, but will allow percy's complex story to be told in a way that's not rushed as it would be in a movie. because the movies flopped due to the filmmakers trying to fit in as many aspects of the first two books as they could without overwhelming the audience, it didn't work (amongst other things). having it be in a tv show format will allow showrunners to spread out the story and give characters more time to develop and also utilize aspects of the books without confusing audiences. also, percy jackson like harry potter is a series that has characters physically aging in every book, so having it be animated eliminates the need to cast younger actors bc they can just be voiced by older voice actors who have youthful voices. rick riordan has been actively pitching the series to companies as a tv show, so hopefully that will happen, regardless if it's animated or not (disney my hopes are with you!). the books deserve justice and i really hope people will be able to see just how good (if not better than harry potter) they are. edit: YASS WE'RE FINALLY GETTING A SHOW ON DISNEY+!!! it looks to be another live action adaptation again, but this time, rick riordan's going to be fully involved! as long as we get a more accurate adaptation of the books, i'm fine with it not being an animated series. uncle rick will make sure it's true to his story, so i'm really looking forward to the show!
i'm just dissapointed that no one could see how perfect the percy jackson books are for TV animated adaptetion. the adventures has an episodic nature, with overarching nerratives to tie them all. the monsters and fights and constant changes can be perfectly created with animation to give the most bizarre and even over the top action like it's supposed to be. i mean, those are super kids with magical powers, it's possible to do it with live action, but harder and i'm afraid that we will lose thos imaginative parts in the story. just dissapointed that disney didn't have the guts to adapt the bokks to their perfect medium, instead of the safest one.
@@shainahum6717 i agree! i also feel that with an animated show, they'll be able to infuse more humor (since the books have a lot of humor) and put the characters in more ridiculous predicaments. when i picture an animated pjo show, i'm thinking avatar the last airbender or kim possible (or any of those 2000s animated shows). having the series be animated will also get younger children to watch it and become more interested with history and mythology, which is something i think should be more noted up on since history is still considered a "boring" subject in schools.
Percy Jackson series confirmed in talks for Disney + by Rick Riordan himself. Here is Disney's chance to make that dream a reality or flush it forever down the drain. Let's hope we get a little justice this time.

hands down it didn't! no respect for the source material, no communication with the author, doubling down with an even more lack-luster sequel, I honestly can't think of a book treated with a rawer deal when it comes to movie adaptations...oh well, with the aforementioned sequel setting the movies in stone, the best people could really hope for is some sort of more faithful reboot, or even a netflix adaptation...

People always talk about the Percy Jackson Series when praising Rick Riordan, but personally, the Kane Chronicles series is what got me into his books. The unique factor that everything in the three books is a recording and sometimes Carter or Sadie pops in with a sarcastic comment when the other sibling is narrating is so amusing. I love both PJO and KC so the fact that Riordan made a trilogy crossover like the legend that he is, made me happy. I haven't read Magnus Chase yet because I am broke as hell and I haven't been able to buy yet and I refuse to read online and not in a book.
The Kane chronicles is really good too. I wish it was brought up more in discourse. Also you could borrow the books from the library! That’s what I would do. I still haven’t been able to collect all the books but I read them all through the public library and the school library.
My mom started me on percy Jackson but I will never forget how excited the kane chronicles made me. I will always remember dragging (read begging until she acquiesced) my mom to barnes and nobels because the new one just came out. Get it and read the book in 8 hours. I still have them granted they are beat to hell and covered with doodles but I was 10 XD
i like the kane chronicles more too. carter and sadie were so fun to follow! i had never seen an estranged sibling dynamic like theirs but it was still so fun
@NoobMaster69 Riordans universe works on the logic that human belief and faith creates and sustains gods. This has been implied since Percy Jackson, gods need demigods to go on quests for them and losing belief in gods is what causes pan to die. But in TOA it's confirmed that every culture creates their own gods, meaning that every religion is correct and every god conceived is real.
In the Kane Chronicles about Egyptian Gods, there was also a quote about them not going to manhattan because there were “other gods” there (Greek gods)
Percy Jackson is, to this day, my favorite book series. I read it when I was around 12 and I’m about to turn 20. No series has been able to top riordan’s series for me.

Omg were the same age and read the book at the same time! And I felt the same way, until I read Rangers Apprentice, my new favourite series, which is just better(that was very hard for me to admit to myself originally), it's so good! you should give it a chance
@@OnionYeeter well I read Harry Potter in my mother tongue multiple times first (I was a great fan) and re-read it in English so it was easier, followed with Percy Jackson which was easier than Harry Potter
Actually, Jesus is canon in the Riordanverse. In “The Sword of Summer“ Thor claimed that he once challenged Jesus to a duel but he never showed up. Also, in “Percy Jackson's Greek Gods“, Percy explains that Dionysus once moved with his followers towards india but stopped there because of “other magical forces“
That could be a reference to the Hinduism gods (who make no sense at all) but with the Abrahamic religions being centered in the Middle East it would be viable.
@@vidhugugnani339 You could be a athiest Hindu, a monothiest Hindu and a polythiest Hindu and all are legitimate views of Hinduism. While in the Greek world it's polytheism only and in the Abrahamic religions, the monotheism is heavily emphasized.
Another important addition: the diversity in Percy Jackson and its spinoffs is actually textual, and not just retcons like JK Rowling does. Even if you don't find diversity important, you have to admit it's admirable to actually include, for example, a gay character in your book and then deal with what that means as opposed to confirming it AFTER the books are done when you easily could have put it in the text
I also love the facts that a lot of his diversity stem from his own experiences teaching middle school children. He draws a lot from life and it feels to me a little bit more organic than the whole things Rowling has been tweeting. (My favorite from his books is the siblings rivalry in Kane Chronicles and the struggle he show when it comes to biracial kid!)

“Percy Jackson has two spin-off series“ Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase, Demigod Diaries, Crossover Stories, Trials of Apollo, God and Hero tales, etc.
He def missed Trials of Apollo, but Demigod Diaries aren't a series unto themselves, they're just short stories that are semi-canon. Demigods and Magicians would be one (three) of those semi-canon short stories. And Gods and Heroes aren't even technically stories, they're just the myths as told by Percy.
One thing i love about PJO compared to Harry Potter is the Hunters of Artemis because it shows that your characters don't have to be in a relationship to be great characters...
Who?, She still got married and had kids. The Hunters, who, for the great most part, literally swear off men for oftentimes millennia, enforce that it’s okay to not want or “need” to be with someone.
@@fizzycolapop362 Ow, I'm not talking about it, I'm just saying to anyone who just read the books, Luna and some various characters didn't end up married, so the message is there (casual readers don't brother to search for extra information honestly) Also, people change their minds about things, an unbreakable promise just incinerates this fact, so it's definitely not a good example of this massage (it's a good trap to catch young soldiers though).
I enjoy the way Rick just WRITES different. He writes with this fast pace, short attention span style because it was intended for kids like his own son with ADHD.... and as a kid who hated reading, this was the only thing that would keep my interest. I learned to like books through his writing style.
wouldn't really work. The Holy Trinity is just too OP to make anything with in the same sense, and anytime their enemies get involved (Satan or other demons) everyone tends to just kick things upstairs until it hits the point of someone who can deal with the situation gets involved (typically some archangels or the Holy Trinity themselves need to get involved) as no one else can deal with that kind of situation on their own. the Catholic saints have a much more reasonable power level (and they do have various domains that they represent), but there's still not much in the way of interesting conflict to work with anyway (since the saints mostly deal with mortal conflicts), and there are a lot of saints (not as many saints as Shinto has Kami. I think.)
Unfortunately, me and my sister had a giant sibling rivalry over which was better, Harry Potter or Percy Jackson. Because of this, I didn’t read it until i was 11. (I read Harry Potter when I was 7) however, because i was a very mature 11 year old (i read a 14th century epic poem when I was 11) I got to enjoy how fun and well written it was.

Percy Jackson is also funny! I love Percy’s sarcasm and there are quite a lot of puns/wordplay jokes. As a massive Greek/Roman mythology nerd, I loved how much research Riordan did for his stories. Also, Percy’s ADHD and dyslexia actually being strengths ( he’s hardwired for fighting and reading Ancient Greek) is cool, and Riordan wrote the books for one of his sons who is ADHD and dyslexic. I have bought the first book for several children with learning differences.
20 bucks theres gonna be a huge giant god battle. if it happened or the books are wrapped up dont tell me i haven't read all of them. and plan to re read.
and right in the first book Dionysus makes very certain to clarify that they are lower-g gods, and thus embodiments of primordial forces, rather than capital-G, which is outright Metaphysical.
Same for me the first book that I've read was the house of hades when I was in 5th grade now I'm currently in trials of apollo. Percy Jackson is truly my childhood up until now.
Another difference: Characters in the Riordanverse have different abilities (Percy with water, Jason with air, Nico with angst) This makes the characters mach more diverse and exciting, needing to strategize when keeping their abilities in mind when deducing advantages and disadvantages. It overall makes the combat much more exciting. In the Harry Potter universe, almost any wizard can use the exact same abilities, which means that you could swap out two people in a fight, and it would barely make a difference, as they have the same abilities. These make combat scenes much more dull, especially with the overuse of certain elements, and not as many true threats of character death, as we know that Rowling would never kill off a member of the golden trio, but we know for a fact the Riordan will easily kill off one of the seven.
_Cyrusis _ It also places the characters on a more even scale for power; it’s harder to compare them. In HP, yes, they do address that one can be better at certain forms of magic than others, mostly thinking and feeling, but that’s close to where it ends. It’s just “This is the brightest witch of her age, this is the chosen one, and this is the control group- er, I mean, the other friend.” Don’t get me wrong, Ron’s powerful when it counts, but throughout the series, Ron is generally made out to be less powerful than Hermione, the “smart one,” and Harry, the “chosen one.” In PJO, though, despite the presence of the Big Three and the minor deities, they’re all spread out enough that there’s no clear answer to who is more powerful. Is Percy most powerful? I mean, he can control water and breathe underwater. But Nico can raise the dead! Thalia could live forever, and her brother can fly. Piper can basically mind control, Leo is a natural pyromaniac (capable of awesome machinery stuff), Frank can shapeshift, Annabeth is a remarkable strategist... Hazel can literally alter the mist, the very world and the way that they view it; the list goes on, and the difference in abilities shows everyone’s necessity and uniqueness, making it nearly impossible to put one over another in the rank of “Who is most important.” It makes it interesting, and it’s just really cool. Better relates to human strength, as people can be strong in different ways. I just really like it. Sorry for the vent and thanks for reading.
Magnus Chase: "...why then not use a.C.???" "Becouse Thor is still mad at Jesus for not showing up at that duel he challenged him on..." Just for sharing a bit of love for my Mango Cheese boy
Magnus Chase is great! After finishing PJO, HoO and the Kane Chronicles in a year and a half, I was like, "Huh, guess it's over." And then, bam! I found Magnus Chase and absolutely love it.
Moses exists too: he's the only non-member to ever defeat a member of the House of Life in a duel. Then there's spin-off series by other authors like Storm Runner and Aru Shah, which don't technically take place in the same universe but some of the series are similar enough that I sort of clump them (the latter is Hindu-based, but includes Greek and Irish mythology in the first book alone). At this point, I basically figure all religions, ancient and modern, are to some degree true in the Riordanverse.
17:58 actually, this is confirmed. Apollo mentions the Aztecs have enough blood sacrifices to keep the sun moving, fending off chinese dragons, oh and he meets a Yoruban demigod in one book, too. Plus it's mentioned that Jesus did exist and blew off Thor. (I think it was Thor.)
Rick also does a phenomenal job of representing many people. He has multiple LGBTQ+ characters in his books, the aforementioned neurodivergent characters, and characters of different religions. He said he did this because he used to be a teacher, and he wanted all of his kids to be able to relate to what he read, regardless of who they were or what they identified as, and I love him for that.
This shouldnt be high praise but i respect the fact that he basically went "I am sorry for the lack of racial diversity in my book. I will add more in future books because that is the obvious thing to do." so much
and he has such casual disability representation too. like, he took a guy in a wheelchair and went, this character is not going to sit on the sides, he's going to fight like anyone else, but in a unique way and the inclusion of disabled people who aren't magically made better is just so good its so rare
Something I liked much better in Percy Jackson is that there were stakes in the form of the audience having mortal characters that we are supposed to care about. For instance Sally Jackson, Rachel Dare, etc. There’s even a line in Magnus Chase saying how they had to prevent Ragnarok for people like Estelle (Percy’s little sister) to have a life, In Harry Potter the only Muggle characters are the Dursley’s and they were terrible people anyway so the audience never really cared what happened to them.
Don't forget Amir Who is a mortal and didn't even have the naturally born power of being able to see monsters normally like Rachel or Sally And his a Muslim
@@feloniuselia5272 Yeah that's what I said "naturally born power of being able to see monsters normally like Rachel or Sally" And I don't even know what you mean by that last sentence except that it's 9
When I was a kid and had a shitty home life and some psychological issues too (bipolar instead of ADHD) Percy Jackson was my life force. I could pretend I was a demigod and that everything would be better one day. That inspired me to start writing, I guess you’d call it fan fiction but it was just stories about me and my friends in the world of Percy Jackson, because I could write about myself being strong and brave and badass. Those stories developed a love of writing which not only helps me process everything in my life, but also which I just really enjoy. I’m writing a book series right now and it’s really all thanks to Rick Riordan that I ever started writing.
That really cool! I’m glad you were able to escape life through Percy Jackson. I really want to know what your book series is about and its name. Let me know when it gets published. I’ll be sure to read it.
@@luuuuux_ thanks! And odd, I thought I replied earlier w info about it... hmm... anyway, it’s called Stars of Night (as of rn), it’s about a group of people who have to stop a genocidal fae from taking over the known world. Unfortunately, these people are all hated by the kingdoms for various reasons, so convincing the kingdoms to band together against the fae is nigh impossible - but they know they have to try
I found that I related to the PJO books a lot more. I’m not sure why but I found them a lot more enjoyable. I’m also glad that the further you got into the series, the more serious and diverse it got. Yeah maybe the first five books were primarily for kids, but I felt like as I grew so did the book and that was something I loved, even though HP was similar it didn’t feel the same. Rick’s Inclusion of more diverse characters never felt rushed or like he only did it for the money. It felt like he was doing it because he wanted to do it and because he knew that was something his readers would definitely enjoy. Don’t get me wrong I love the HP books, but there’s always been something about Ricks books that made me feel like I was fighting monsters right along with them
I prefer the characters in Percy Jackson more than HP, but I like the settings of HP more. I dunno, I've always been a sucker for worlds that authors came up with themselves, with power levels that are unique to that world. I dunno, I just feel like... it's more majestic? There are so many possibilities... so many things that could be fleshed out. I dunno, it's hard to explain. Percy Jackson feels a lot more contained, if you know what I mean? Even though they're set on the same planet. Rick Riordan's good at writing out his characters in a relatable way, where you feel like his characters are- real, living people, something like that. JK Rowling's really good at world building- so many characters, so many items, all with different histories- oh my lord, and I really loved the political aspects of it, of the Ministries and, urgh. It's like a real living, breathing world. Either way, both are magical to me. Both are my childhood. I really wish I could forget about them both and reread them all over again.
I love that Riordan knows that kids want to see themselves in characters, he knew that children didn’t get to see enough of themselves, he created the entire story to make his son ( who likes Greek mythology) feel good about his dyslexia and ADHD, Riordan has seen first hand that there isn’t enough diversity in books
Unlike Hermione, Annabeth is a good example of a character who is smarter and better educated than the protagonist (and knows it), but doesn't make you want to strangle her in every chapter.
Aren't we going to talk about how PJO is a lot more diverse than Harry Potter? I might be a little bias here but I found the diversity in PJO universe happened more organicly.
Yeah, both Harry Potter and PJO didn't have much diversity, but Riordan wrote new series and introduced a lot more diverse characters, whereas JK Rowling just tried to retroactively claim that characters from the Harry Potter books were gay/jewish etc. to seem progressive.
@@lisa-3373 Rather than tweeting and bending his story afterward to seem more diverse, his books becomes more and more diverse as it goes. It was written in an organic way too since he draws a lot from time when he was a middle school teacher and meet all kinds of kids!
who the f and why does he cares... this diversity shit is going out of control. and what if it doesnt have diversity? someone is going to die? when i read something i'm not searching for different colors or different sexual orientations or whatever. i'm searching for great characters. i don't care if they happen to be "diverse" or not. this search for diversity is ruining both books and movies. the whole entertainment industry is suffering because of it. just follow the story. if something make sense then it make sense. and i guess if a lot of people read my comment they would say "i bet he is white". you know what, yes i am white. but i'm also easter european, i'm slavic, i'm Bulgarian. we are not represented a lot in media. and i don't care. when a Bulgarian character appeared in Harry Potter, i was like "ha" and moved on. Not having a bulgarian, or even slavic, character in a story doesn't bother me one bit. do you know what would bother me? having a bulgarian main character when there is no reason. that nowadays we always have to have at least one black, one asian, one jewish, one gay, and one bi (or whatever else sexual preference) character in a story. and if the main character can be one of those, it's even better. it's annoying. for me needing "to have specific race for the sake of diversity" is more racist that just not having it, especially when it's not needed by the story.
Suncho okay I guess you're right on one thing a diverse cast doesn't make something better. But I disagree on your other points. I guess what I'm saying is it's not important for one story to have diversity but stories about other races, other sexualities, etc. need to exist because those people exist.
Rick Riordan: After writing great story goes on to write more great stories J. K. Rowling: After writing great story makes decisions in post such as everyone used to poop on the floor with no regard to sanitation.

@@eveakastar5082 I've been a Harry Potter fan for a long time and I've never picked up Rick Riordan's book (The Sea of Monsters movie doesnt further help in my view of the series, I hope the movies could have another chance and a better execution of that). But thats not why I'm replying to you I'm currently trying to write a book and I would be very pleased to find out what made you unsatisfied or unhappy with the Harry Potter series, in detail. I've learned so much from this video and I'm very glad I clicked this video and I want to learn more. So please if you can spare some time to explain why, I'll very appreciate it
lone Brand! Well in the Phoenix one it took about 500 pages to get into the fight and then sirus black died in like 2 lines. I feel like the author dragged it out too long and then rushed the ending! So advice for you is don’t rush the ending and don’t drag it on to long. And if someone dies derail it a bit more than just a few lines. Good luck on the book.
@@eveakastar5082 ahhh I see. I appreciate your input and I'll definitely try to keep that in mind when writing my book. To be fair tho, Avada Kedavra is an instant death so I understand why Sirius's death is so quick. But I also agree, Sirius (even though only being there for harry in 3 books), means so much to Harry. For a character like him, I wish he has a more well-deserved death
I adored the Percy Jackson books. I'd read my books so many times they were so dog eared and tattered that pages were falling out. It made me feel like a normal person seeing someone with ADHD have the same struggles as me yet still achieve great things.
I would contest the issue PJO's theme not really executing the theme of "you can't always rely on the government and must seek ways to reform it" given that it's not really a central theme and the Olympian Council is hardly seen as a government. They're more seen as a family and the theme, as I see it, revolves more around how they're all family and should probably treat each other better and actually unite. The fact that they're all family makes it extra angering that the mistreatment of demigods exist. Though I don't think I ever really saw the Olympian council as complacent. Maybe in book 2, but they get pretty active after book 3, but they just have their hands tied with Ancient Laws and big enemies, unless we're talking about Hades, Demeter, and Persephone in the last book. It doesn't really make sense to me to compare the execution to two themes, when they're not given the same amount of emphasis.
While we're on the note of contrasting and comparing, I absolutely loved both Hermione and Annabeth. They were the ones who made me fall in love with the "strong and smart" character, and the kind of character I eventually became lol. But the connection I made with them was a little different. They both started out the same for me: I liked them because they were smart, began to hate them when they showed their more prideful side, but then appreciated them for their flaws and their attempts to make up for it. In Harry Potter, Hermione becomes an adult, raises a family, becomes a well known figure in a historical war, and is a highly respected figure in her job. There is a sense of finality. Hermione is not the eleven year old we first knew her as. She's grown. And while you can neither say goodbye nor can you go back to the memories you had with your childhood, you can still be reminiscent. When you close the book, you sya your final goodbye as Hermione goes on with her day. In Percy Jackson, Annabeth wants to settle down, but in a way that still left room for having adventures. Sure, she was going to college with Percy, but she also gets mixed up in Magnus' and Sadie's worlds. But the focus isn't on her anymore. Currently, it's on mortalized Greek god Apollo who goes by Lester now. There is a new story with new characters. You tag along on that same familiar ride, but you can't help but look back from time to time. TL;DR When we leave Hermione, we are saying goodbye to a main character in an epic farewell, remembered forever. When we say goodbye to Annabeth, we will be saying goodbye to her as she steps into the background to allow for other characters to take her spotlight. You'll see the both of them again, but your last memory together is slightly different. Makes you wonder which one is sadder
As a lover of the “smart girl” stereotype because she was who I could connect to, I think you put the different feeling very nicely, they are similar but not the same
See, I agree that they have the same formula, but Percy Jackson books are so much better. The powers are laid out and made character specific and explained. This ties up everything and leave very few plot holes as “he should’ve just...” (though the map lines were a bit much) The characters are more relatable/ realistic. Most people haven’t been forced to live with people who hate them, but everyone has had to deal with teachers who don’t. PJ isn’t an orphan, doesn’t just get whooshed into a better life and never has anything to go back for, and has a reason to fight for the “normal people”, and it isn’t just that he’s a good guy, bc he does occasionally steal, but he has people he’s doing it for. And to this, bc the books are narrated and tell us his thoughts, he doesn’t just seem dumb. We know he has adhd, and dyslexia, and we can hear him have issues with this in the story. He can be dumb, but it’s because we saw him earlier completely tune out what Annabeth was saying earlier. And honestly, it’s more immersive because even though the wizard isn’t World was well thought out, PJ takes place in the real world. They have the Mist to say that mortals can’t see the crazy stuff that happens right under our noses, but this makes it so that we know exactly what kind of world this is in. It’s not some fantastic mystical world where everyone can solve problems worth magic, it’s like ours with worse issues. And lastly, they actually have issues. HP’s main issues is saving the world and doing school. It isn’t until the 7th book where they point out that he is having difficulty getting money, fighting death eaters, and looking like he might lose. PJ is constantly BSing his way in and out of danger, and this makes it much more interesting to me. And when he’s not actively in danger, he’s a 12-17+ year old having to find food, shelter, and an answer to his problems that he doesn’t yet know.
but the thing is that percy isn’t dumb, he usually outsmarts his opponents. the reason why we think he is dumb is because other characters see his actions as wreckless and impulsive (which is why they call him dumb or idiot after) and he is very pessimistic, especially when he’s talking about himself
@@mariaerdgzn We also think Percy is dumb because we see inside of his mind. When something happens which he isn't prepared for (which is pretty much everything XD) he freaks out. He isn't like oh a giant is not confronting me to battle. I know I will *blah blah blah*. Instead he is like "oh shit oh fuck why the fuck is he here, fuck what do I do."
He based some of his characters on real students to! You know Travis and Conner stoll were real students! They even have social media, and. Charles Beckendorf. He was a real kid-and Rick blew him up -.-, but as far as I know he’s healthy and safe irl. Even Nico was based on a student!
There's also the point of the movies. On one side, we have a wonderful adaptation. On the other side we have something that is quite the opposite. So much that the author has disowned them
Correction, he mails it to the gods with one of the greatest exchanges in any Percy Jackson book which also sums up his character & his stance on the gods in one paragraph. Percy: *writing down address on package containing head* Annabeth: They'll think you're impertinent. Percy: I am Impertinent. (also yeah having a really cool fantasy character with ADHD was really really awesome to me when i was a kid & tbh still is now i'm an adult. Diagnosed ADD when i was 7.) :D
I read the Percy Jackson books a year ago. Before that, I had watched the movies. The movies made me so confused and then I read the books and was like, "Wow. This is so much better." I'm currently reading Magnus Chase now
I wish you'd talked about how Rick Riordan started with the tropes, although even starting with two of the three main characters having learning disabilities was pretty bold, and then as he got famous he introduced more and more diversity. Nico is gay, I think Reyna is a lesbian, the hunters of artemis are mostly asexual, I haven't read them but I think there's a muslim character and a nonbinary genderfluid character in magnus chase, he just makes his stories incredibly diverse which is a gift.
Reyna's sexuality isn't really confirmed at the end of the last Trials of Apollo book she mentions that she doesn't want to be with anyone at that point so maybe she's ace but it's really up in the air
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading somewhere in Blood of Olympus where Reyna was given a "prophecy" saying she's not meant for a mortal partner... And so I assumed she'd be partnered with Apollo in Apollo's Trials...
GUYS DID YOU KNOW THAT MRS. DODDS WAS A FURY AND NOT A HARPY?

Also, the reason why Uncle Rick wrote 'The Lightning Thief' was because of his son who had ADHD and Dyslexia who was having trouble in school and the only subject he ever liked was Mythology. Talk about a great dad.

In my opinion, The Romantic side of Percy Jackson is very good. It doesn’t happen immediately and it is with a very prominent female character. How they started off as a friends to something more. both bonded over a long period of time. The books have a healthy relationship development.
Realllly long period of time

The way Riordan casually slips in pop culture references and well timed jokes makes these books instant favorites of mine.
You guys remember when Frank Zhang suggested doing the "Wakanda thing"?
Brandon Chan never change, Rick...

Well you know...I've read the Percy Jackson books multiple times over the years and I never really thought about them turning Gabe to stone and selling his body. It was just one of those things where I basically thought "yeah okay, good on them for getting him out of their lives" when they actually murdered him and got away with it.
sally was initially against the idea of doing that, until he came in asking for bean dip. then she got enough funds to kickstart her writer career :D
They live in different moral than normal human, and selly has becoke part of it. Karma is real, if it was in mythologic world, gabe would get his karma soon or later. Percy see it as to punish evil human, and let her mother live in peace. He see it as to protect himself and his mom.

He also said Percy was attacked by a harpy, when he’s actually attacked by a fury.
Percy's relationship with Annabeth, I feel, is handled a lot better than Ginny and Harry. Especially throughout the verse of books.

We're talking about Ginny and Harry, not Harry and Hermione...
I liked Ginney and Harry a lot in the books they were terrible in the film
I'm not saying Ginny and Harry is BAD, I'm just saying I prefer Percy and Annabeth in every single way.

the percy jackson series honestly deserves the same level of acclaim harry potter did but because the movies flopped so hard, no one gave it a second thought. this is why i'm hoping it'll be picked up for an animated series, which isn't exactly in the same league as the harry potter movies, but will allow percy's complex story to be told in a way that's not rushed as it would be in a movie. because the movies flopped due to the filmmakers trying to fit in as many aspects of the first two books as they could without overwhelming the audience, it didn't work (amongst other things). having it be in a tv show format will allow showrunners to spread out the story and give characters more time to develop and also utilize aspects of the books without confusing audiences. also, percy jackson like harry potter is a series that has characters physically aging in every book, so having it be animated eliminates the need to cast younger actors bc they can just be voiced by older voice actors who have youthful voices. rick riordan has been actively pitching the series to companies as a tv show, so hopefully that will happen, regardless if it's animated or not (disney my hopes are with you!). the books deserve justice and i really hope people will be able to see just how good (if not better than harry potter) they are.
edit: YASS WE'RE FINALLY GETTING A SHOW ON DISNEY+!!! it looks to be another live action adaptation again, but this time, rick riordan's going to be fully involved! as long as we get a more accurate adaptation of the books, i'm fine with it not being an animated series. uncle rick will make sure it's true to his story, so i'm really looking forward to the show!
Love your profile and I fully agree
@@user-km9bx3gf3z thank you 💕
i'm just dissapointed that no one could see how perfect the percy jackson books are for TV animated adaptetion. the adventures has an episodic nature, with overarching nerratives to tie them all. the monsters and fights and constant changes can be perfectly created with animation to give the most bizarre and even over the top action like it's supposed to be. i mean, those are super kids with magical powers, it's possible to do it with live action, but harder and i'm afraid that we will lose thos imaginative parts in the story.
just dissapointed that disney didn't have the guts to adapt the bokks to their perfect medium, instead of the safest one.

@NoobMaster69 Riordans universe works on the logic that human belief and faith creates and sustains gods. This has been implied since Percy Jackson, gods need demigods to go on quests for them and losing belief in gods is what causes pan to die. “Percy Jackson has two spin-off series“
Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase, Demigod Diaries, Crossover Stories, Trials of Apollo, God and Hero tales, etc.
Only two of those take place outside the Greek myth series tbf. Maybe 2.5 if we count Demigods and Magicians
Well, only HoO and ToA are true spinoffs, the other ones are just related but not directly linked.
Yeah I don't even know what I'm saying anymore.
Demigod Diaries are actually canon because Bob showed up in Tartarus in The House of Hades to help Percy
Michael O'Connor all are connected
One thing i love about PJO compared to Harry Potter is the Hunters of Artemis because it shows that your characters don't have to be in a relationship to be great characters...

Who?, She still got married and had kids. The Hunters, who, for the great most part, literally swear off men for oftentimes millennia, enforce that it’s okay to not want or “need” to be with someone.

wouldn't really work. Same for me the first book that I've read was the house of hades when I was in 5th grade now I'm currently in trials of apollo. Percy Jackson is truly my childhood up until now.
Another difference:
Characters in the Riordanverse have different abilities (Percy with water, Jason with air, Nico with angst)
This makes the characters mach more diverse and exciting, needing to strategize when keeping their abilities in mind when deducing advantages and disadvantages.
Hazel can literally alter the mist, the very world and the way that they view it; the list goes on, and the difference in abilities shows everyone’s necessity and uniqueness, making it nearly impossible to put one over another in the rank of “Who is most important.”
It makes it interesting, and it’s just really cool. Better relates to human strength, as people can be strong in different ways. I just really like it. Sorry for the vent and thanks for reading.

Yep, and he doesn't reveal a character's queerness 20 YEARS AFTER THE BOOKS CONCLUDED
Unlike JK who turned out to be a raving transphobe.
I'm sure in one of his tweets he called out homophobic parent and used tag # AllKidsDeservrRepresentation
Something I liked much better in Percy Jackson is that there were stakes in the form of the audience having mortal characters that we are supposed to care about. For instance Sally Jackson, Rachel Dare, etc. There’s even a line in Magnus Chase saying how they had to prevent Ragnarok for people like Estelle (Percy’s little sister) to have a life,
In Harry Potter the only Muggle characters are the Dursley’s and they were terrible people anyway so the audience never really cared what happened to them.

When I was a kid and had a shitty home life and some psychological issues too (bipolar instead of ADHD) Percy Jackson was my life force.
Does diversity even matter. The diversity is organic until you get to MC GoA
who the f and why does he cares...
this diversity shit is going out of control.
and what if it doesnt have diversity? someone is going to die?
when i read something i'm not searching for different colors or different sexual orientations or whatever. i'm searching for great characters. i don't care if they happen to be "diverse" or not.
this search for diversity is ruining both books and movies. the whole entertainment industry is suffering because of it.
just follow the story. if something make sense then it make sense.
and i guess if a lot of people read my comment they would say "i bet he is white". you know what, yes i am white. but i'm also easter european, i'm slavic, i'm Bulgarian. we are not represented a lot in media. and i don't care.
when a Bulgarian character appeared in Harry Potter, i was like "ha" and moved on.

How Rick Riordan writes books:
Pure talent

Used pure sadness from the fandom
Because of the movie
This "the ones in power are a dysfunctional family" theme is actually more reminiscent of the last season of Steven Universe.
Lucia Mills
Definitely! They really are like that!
Percy-"Not like an actual myth. Its a made-up myth."
Jason- "so, this is why Annabeth is the brains of the operation?"
Percy-Shut up, Grace.

See, I agree that they have the same formula, but Percy Jackson books are so much better.
The powers are laid out and made character specific and explained. This ties up everything and leave very few plot holes as “he should’ve just...” (though the map lines were a bit much)
The characters are more relatable/ realistic.
Plus it's not overated and oversaturated
but the thing is that percy isn’t dumb, he usually outsmarts his opponents. the reason why we think he is dumb is because other characters see his actions as wreckless and impulsive (which is why they call him dumb or idiot after) and he is very pessimistic, especially when he’s talking about himself

(also yeah having a really cool fantasy character with ADHD was really really awesome to me when i was a kid & tbh still is now i'm an adult. Diagnosed ADD when i was 7.) :D
i remember being a really annoying (and cynical) 8-year-old diagnosed with autism and i was just sad it wasnt autism instead lmao
I read the Percy Jackson books a year ago. Before that, I had watched the movies. The movies made me so confused and then I read the books and was like, "Wow. This is so much better." I'm currently reading Magnus Chase now
What movies?

I don't think Reyna is a lesbian because she fell in love with Jason and Percy(?), so bisexual at the very least
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading somewhere in Blood of Olympus where Reyna was given a "prophecy" saying she's not meant for a mortal partner... And so I assumed she'd be partnered with Apollo in Apollo's Trials...

Yeah.. it’s soo annoying right?

At least Rick Riordan didn’t say “Chiron is gay who’s had intense sexual relationship with Kronos”
