  • I have thought long and hard about the MOTHER trilogy, and I admit this video may be somewhat shallow. The main problem, though, is I lose my cool towards the end. I'm just so passionate about these games I make myself look silly.

    I think Porky fills the hall with "objects of love" and song full of love as a sort of study, or maybe to boast that he has the most love out of everyone, look at these love objects he has. He rips these objects and the song out of context and they become lifeless and shallow. The love isnt a quantifiable thing that's stored in a person or an object, its in relationship between people, but Porky doesnt *get* that. I think he tries to get love by stealing moments from others instead of building relationships, and that is his hubris. He also literally gets shut inside indestructible shell, forever separating himself from others.

      Though, the song "Pollyanna" predates Porky/Pokey, from the first NES Mother/Earthbound Beginnings/Zero game.

      Old comment but I think there's more to this. Porky actually longs for love but is too emotionally immature to understand his own feelings. He's confused by these feelings and acts them out in his own warped way, like his obsession with Ness and Earthbound.
      This interpretation also aligns with the ultimately hopeful message of the MOTHER series. Porky, in his attempt to prove humanity is fundamentally evil, is betrayed by his own nature (albeit in a small way).

      Porky has Dio syndrome, he wants jonathans body because respect, necessity and to be like a dork. Like he thinks he’s a clever funny bad guy and cool and rubbing salt in the wound but in reality its just pathetic dio/porky trying to reclaim some sense of humanity post power trip/transformation of the “years gone by”

    There *is* a Pollyanna motive for Ana, as well.
    Ana has been believing that Ninten will show up in her life for the longest time now. She believed that together, they could contribute to a greater purpose. She didn't know this boy, yet she naively trusted him with giving her life a purpose.

    It just occurred to me that porky keeping all the stuff from earthbound is a side of him that secretly cherishes his memories with ness, similar to him keeping his yoyo in his treasure room in the thunder tower. Pollyanna in that room can be viewed as either ironic or genuine depending on the lens its viewed through.

    I think Porky's version in M3 is supposed to sound like a charmless hall of fame cover-band version, with those corny drums and overall sound.. reflects the clean and sanitized room containing just a bunch of objects pulled from their context and history, on parade for his own enjoyment.

  • @jhart6764
    @jhart6764 Год назад +21

    I feel like an important part of mother 3's Pollyanna is that it is pointless.
    The only person Porky has faith in is Ness, who he betrayed. His hope is that Ness will join him because of how much he considers him a friend. He's grasping at a past that won't happen. He betrayed others and destroyed his second chance thoroughly. Porky is trying to get you to sympathize with him by calling upon nostalgia, but you're reminded at the end of who he is and what he's done.

    Note what the song starts with: "I believe the morning sun, Always gonna shine again, and,"
    The baseline is something we know is completely true and reliable.
    So we know that there is good in humanity as long as the sun still rises (which, humanity wouldn't survive if it didn't so it's practically always true)

    I wonder, did you read the Pollyanna books and watched the anime before you made this video? I actually started looking at the book and the anime in January because was so interested what Pollyanna means. In the book, a lot of adults have lost their happiness and Pollyanna wants to remind them of their happiness by using the glad game. The roses in the book weren't explained into much detail, in the anime the symbolism is "Love". The Disney version is very different from the books, but I know that the anime very faithful to the book. It would be best if you read the book because the anime is pretty slow unless if you enjoyed the book then you should be okay watching it.
    Pollyanna did have a sequel called Pollyanna: Grows up, there's a lack of adaptations but for some reason the anime doesn't adapt the last half of the book where she becomes an adult. I will go into more detail if any of you are interested. I would have to make a video because there's more to talk about compared to how much you explained in the video because there are themes that you didn't go into detail about. The video doesn't reference the book that much, instead you mainly use the song as a reference for your video so it doesn't answer that much about the meaning of Pollyanna.
    SPOILERS for the Pollyanna.
    The end of the book was one of my favorite parts, she loses her ability to walk and she becomes stuck in the bed for months. The people in the book are reminded of the faith she had in other people which she had lost at the time. This scene is pretty similar to the end of EarthBound where Ness' friends and loved ones he has met throughout his journey has helped him defeat Giygas.

    • @mackerelphones
      @mackerelphones  6 лет назад +30

      I read the original novel some years ago. My memory is that it's fine. But I don't think the novel itself is really relevant to the MOTHER series. I talked about it rather to explain the literal origin of the word "Pollyanna." The video isn't meant to be about what the actual novel Pollyanna means.
      But I don't think I'd have ever thought to compare the ending of Pollyanna to the ending of EarthBound. That could be an interesting idea.

    I would actually think that, in Mother/Earthbound Beginnings,
    This is targeted at Giegue, from his *Mother, suggesting that she still believes in her adopted son, knowing well what he has done.
    In Earthbound/Mother 2...
    I have no idea, really.
    And in Earthbound 2/Mother 3, it may be Pokey/Porky, remembering the only friend he ever had, Ness, the only one that showed him kindness...
    ...Until he accidentally shunned him by being a silent protagonist...
    ...Also, about the part about Porky probably killing Ness and his cohorts and stealing the objects,
    He could've just gone back to a point after the heroes would've encountered and/or needed said objects or the individiuals.
    Not to mention, if Pokey killed them before they stopped Giygas, then Mother 3 wouldn't have happened.

    • @mackerelphones
      @mackerelphones  5 лет назад +8

      Ooohh! I like that idea about Mother. That's better than my lazy read. But I don't think Porky believes in Ness anymore by Mother 3.
      I didn't say Porky killed Ness and and company, I said he might have killed Tessie and Dungeonman.

    • @L33PL4Y
      @L33PL4Y 5 лет назад +21

      I think in EarthBound/MOTHER 2, it's Ness talking to Pokey. Throughout the game, no matter how badly he treats Ness, no matter how many horrible things he does, Ness still wants to believe that Pokey will come around and be a good person again like he used to be before his corruption became too deep. Throughout the game there are little moments where Pokey acts like he wants to be friends again, only to turn and mock Ness further, making fun of his willingness to believe that Pokey can change. And in Magicant, Ness finds Pokey again, a mental imprint of Ness's undying hope that Pokey will change and return to his old self again; a good self, even if somewhat annoying. This also gives further weight to the fact that you hear a snippet of Pollyanna play as you leave Pokey's house, which is when the adventure truly begins. Ultimately, the entire game could be considered to really about Pokey's betrayal and his darkening character arc.

    For me this song is a call to action. It's a pledge to take the difficult path (talking to/understanding/helping people in this world, even if they've hurt you) as opposed to the easy way out (giving up on people and becoming just as hurtful and cynical and your bullies). This song inspires me whenever I'm struggling to connect to others in my service work. It's extremely relevant to my life.

    I will say this, mother 3 has 2 takes on its ending, being the world ending with the characters communicating after their death (perhaps in the afterlife) and the other ending simply being that they somehow magically saved the world, which personally I think is the way we're supposed to take the ending since as the song we hear at the beginning of our first journey, and at the end of our last one says... we should believe in it even if we know it's unlikely.

    There's an early cutscene in Xenosaga where someone refers to the main character (IIRC) as "Pollyanna." I didn't know what that meant at the time, but the condescending tone of voice and context of the scene heavily suggests they are accusing them of being naive or blindly optimistic.

    Also I figure it’s the song of a mother for her son, namely the protagonist. It’s not a happy song. She has three children, and her husband has left. The protagonist is now the only man in the house. He shouldn’t have to fill that role, and he’s only a child. But the mother sings that she believes in him, and has hope in him, and loves him.
    Also I thought of the Virgin Mary expressing these sentiments to the adolescent Jesus after they lost Joseph.

    A blue bird is a symbol of joy and happiness so if it’s flying away, that means something terrible is happening and that the person sings this knows that something terrible will happen, but still believes wholeheartedly that the person/situation causing the problems will get better.

    1:09 The MOTHER album was organized by Keiichi Suzuki, but the lyrics are performed by Catherine Warwick for Pollyanna, Bein' Friends, and Wisdom of the World. One of these two people made the lyrics, though my guess is Keiichi Suzuki because he had to write the lyrics for the St. Paul's Cathedinal Choir, and Catherine Warwick, being English, probably knew nothing about MOTHER at the time considering it wasn't localized. Hirokazu Tanaka definitely had nothing to do with the album at all. In fact, I'm pretty sure he did more of the technical stuff in the sound design, not quite composition.

      The person who would be responsible for the lyrics for the Mother album would be Linda Hennrick.
      She was brought in very early in the process of the development of Mother (before they even started programming the game). They wanted the lyrics to be in English because the album was originally intended for a global release, but it was canceled at the last second never making it out of Japan till 2015 when Ship to Shore gave it an official western release.

    Idk if this was mentioned by anyone, but the singer may also simply be referring to Ninten himself as someone who has shown someone maybe shouldn't believe in him. There was a novel of the Mother 1 story, and from what little I saw of it, they portrayed Ninten as kinda a jerk at the start and through a lot of the story.

    The reason "Goodman" and "Pirckle" are similar characters is because theyre the same person.
    Mother 1 is just earthbound but less well made.
    Same enemies, music, story, final boss, protagonists, etc

    • @lukemarcottiribeiro8418
      @lukemarcottiribeiro8418 2 года назад

      no it isnt. earthbound is mother 2, the prequel to mother (1), not a remake. earthbound happens many years after mother 1
