  • In this video I show you how to compression test you engine. The procedure I show in this video would apply to pretty much any internal combustion engine but I'm specifically working on my 2008 BMW 335i with the N54 engine.

    It's important to get a good compression tester, some of the cheaper ones will read low.
    This would be very similar for the N52 as well.
    I was pleasantly surprised by the results :)

    Any mechanic who knows what he's doing will not be surprised by these figures, those compression figures are near perfect for a new engine never mind one that's done 180,000 miles, BMW engines are brilliant if looked after properly and that six cylinder unit really takes some beating for high mileage reliability. I think given those figure that engine will be capable of a least doubling the mileage it has already covered no problem. The Diesel version does Unberlievable mileages between overhauls, that six cylinder in line engine must rate as one of the best engines in the World no matter what that Australian Pillock Scotty says.

    Got a 335i with 180k checked it up only leak is oil gasket housing, got the car on the dyno and made 379hp and 428tq. Has all the supporting bolt on mods with billet twin turbos upgrade. Engine is clean every single gasket has been changed on this motor. Glad i stumbled on your channel helped me pick out a great car.

    A friend of mine had this car with the same engine for over 300kilometers. Never had an issue. Just the waterpump after around 250km.

    My wife's N52 has almost 280k on the engine, yes I've replaced the complete cooling system and it's almost time to do it again, but it's been paid off for a while now, so $600 every 5 years on maintenance is nothing.

    Missfire more than likely injectors. I just installed some reberbished index 12s in my 535i last week and bought the autel ap200 diagnostic tool to code them. Was pretty easy. About 2 hours

    i hope mine makes it this far my n54 is currently at 75k ..these n54s are money pits i baught it with 69k on 15 month ago ..very clean motor with lots of things done inc injectors and turbos ...however i have had to change turbos again due to crappy ones being fitted eather second hand or ebay turbos..,changed valve cover and gasket ,waterpump and thermostat ,oil housing gasket ,gear oil , and seized track rods , however these are mostly maintainance bits other than turbos wich is bad luck ..im planing on keeping for a long time and going to keep up with whatever it needs indeed these are lovly motors to drive :)

    BMW made engines during the Great War for German aircraft including The Flying Circus planes flown by Von Richtofen, they know about engines. Great video proving what I already knew, change the fluids and filters and these cars will go on forever

    My e90 n52 Has almost 170k and running strong, soon im planning to replace oil/coolant housing gasket. Preventative Maintenance. And using Liqui moli and ever since runs better, more powerful and exhaust sounds more Aggressive and no more ticking. And I step on it or u know take off normally and Shifts are very smooth which I love.

    Yes changing your oil every 3k to 5k like clockwork with synthetic and you are on your way to a long life span on your engine.

    Im at 165k and running like a strong tank on my 135i n54 full e85 tune fbo - no longer daily though but I still run it hard once in a while haha

      I had this same problem with my 335i N54 X6 and have checked everything but misfire still there,after long check turned out the DME/ECU had short In #3 after my brother eccdintly ripped off the brown wire in coil #3 While changing the spark plugs and injectors, so I bought used DME and reprogram it now everything works fine.

      Vehicular DIY I fixed my misfire with octane booster. I’m in Canada using 94 and have stage 1 mhd. No misfire on stock and every pre-tune maintenance was done before I tuned it. Guess the fuel we get here is just shit.

    Amazing results for the mileage. Usually it's the rod bearings that kills the N20, N54, N55 and S55 (same exact part).
    You should send a oil sample to a lab to make sure low amounts of wear metals show up in the samples. Lead may not show up in tests as the bearings are made of special alloy.
    The B58 engine uses coated bearings which are significantly more durable.

      Yeah that's a good idea, I will keep a sample on the next oil change. Yeah I believe the bearings are coated on the B58 to tolerate the start/stop functionality.

    I have a friend with 392K on her Bmw e90! I think it just had water pump and a few coils. Do you plan to do anything preventative on your engine like timing chain tensioner, or other common higher mile parts? Or just wait till you have symptoms? Also, thanks for filming all your work for us, and taking us along through your ownership. Cheers

    Got 190-200 on all of mine. 170k miles. Thought i had blow by, a lot of oil coming out of my tial bov. Bad turbos? Not even 100 miles on the turbos.

      Do a cold start on it and see if it smokes. Also, drive it around at very light throttle in D and see if it stumbles or hesitates

    Off-topic question I saw your video about O2 sensors I’m running a stock N54 on my 2008 does it make sense to go ahead and get the Bosch universal or should I get a German OEM brand like FAE from Ecs Tuning etc.? Looks like universal is about half the price. Thx!

      If you don't mind wiring it up the Bosch universal is great for the secondary O2s. You end up with the same exact sensor once you wire it all up.

    Are the adapters reversed thread or can they get stuck in engine when you try to unscrew the tool?

      They are not reversed threaded but you can get a socket on them worst case to get it out if it get stuck.

    What are the compression numbers for a factory engine ? I been told that the n54 it's good with 120 psi , it's that right ?

      I believe you would want to see at least 170 across to deem the motor very healthy. Direct injection turbo cars have compression numbers similar to older NA cars. 120 would be a really low number give the compression ratio of the N54.

    I have question, I have a BMW 500I GT with X drive 2013 54,000km. The issue is that I changed both engine filters and noticed that there is a smaller filter loacted above in the air box. Called BMW and they said you cant change them out. I would need to change airbox filters. Wondering woud it be ok to remove them ? Thank you.

      @@VehicularDIY hey, sorry for the late response. No I'm talking about the engine filters. When you take off the two engine air box covers you have what you would normally expect to see two engine filters. The difference is on mine when you take the covers off and you place the cover upside down there's another filter that is attached to the cover itself. I have never seen this before but I'm told that it is actually part of the top portion of the air box cover and the only way to replace it is to change the air box cover at $500 each. Some people have said that you can change the actual filter another say don't even worry about it just take them off.

    Im a bmw mechanic and I'd say most BMW engines will have a great compression number at 200k mi or more if you keep up with maitenance, problem is especially on the 2006 and newer bmw everything that's plastic or rubber (and there's a lot of plastic & rubber in the engine bay that will be cooked at around 120k mi or less) and a lot of people don't keep up with the maintenance on these cars and won't make it past 200k mi before they overheat the engine and blow the head gasket or it runs like crap due to bad turbos, vacuum leaks, misfires, bad sensors, injectors, valve covers etc. In conclusion Scotty is right, these newer bimmers are endless money pits. Btw I own a manual 2001 330i e46 with just over 200k mi with very healthy compression numbers, in fact the only thing wrong with my car right now is the abs/dsc computer but I will pull it out soon and get it repaired. No need for a newer bmw for me, they just don't make them reliable like they used to.

      So in other words, from what you are saying: They are moneypits because people cant take care of those cars and probably cant take care of any other cars either. In conclusion, scotty is wrong for several reasons. I have had some bimmers and they are in most case even better then alot of the other brands around. People also think that toyota is so much safer and better to buy, they could not be more wrong. Ofc, people could be having bad luck with their buy, but that goes for everything. And on the last part, sadly no one does anymore.

    How much would you sell your car for? I had a 2009 different color but unfortunately it was totaled more than a year ago. I miss that car so much 😥. It had 132000 miles and the car still drove like a new car, it would always put a big ol' smile on my face. It never let me down, I trust these cars so much I ended up buying another BMW. But this time, I got an X3.

    How much oil do you usually burn with that kind of good compression?

      I have never had to add any oil between oil changes even when going up to 7k miles in between. The N55 in my F15 calls for a top up of around half a liter between oil changes. My N62 in my old E70 X5 used to drink more but this N54 has never needed oil. Kind of crazy come to think of it.

      Nice video. I got a 122k miles on my 2011 328i. The car burns about 1 quart of oil about 4-5k mikes. I changed the oil every 6-7k miles. By then, the oil sensor dipstick reads about half way of oil remaining. Not sure why it’s burning. Never replaced valve cover. I may have a slow valve cover leak.

    You can have a good compression but have a bad leak down test, bacause rings can be good but you could have leaking valves with is normal with that milage.

    Im baffle with your misfire !! Only thing im wondering its if there its anything at all in the tune . Could it be a faulty new injector .. i got the same readings on my compression test . Do you run e 85 mix or 93 ?

      I believe he runs a mix like e40-e60 but yeah I think after this we are all baffled that's the only thing I think of is a bad injector.

    What clutch and flywheel are you running? I've read information about stock DMFW and even the Luk replacements causing misfires on higher HP N54's. Just food for thought.

    Misfire is likely a coil pack or plug, or plug wire.

    I thought you had gone with aftermarket coils? also wasn't your misfire on #6 fixed after the MSD81 DME/O2 sensor replacement?

      I did but they weren't required at my power level so I'm running Eldor coils. May end up putting the aftermarket coils back in at a later date. The misfire has been intermittent so for now it's not resolved and it's appearing to be tune related.

    I am at 105k '07 n54. What oil do you use? I have been using Liqui moly 10w 30 . Thinking of using mobil one 0w 40 European oil

      Why the hell are you using 10W-30 the oil is wayyy too thick when the engine is cold which results in more metal on metal contact when you first start the engine since the oil needs to take more time getting to the parts. Use 5W-40 for summer, and 0W-40 for winter if you live in a cold area.

    I did my compression on cold engine my compression was all over. 130 ,140 ,140, 140 and 110. After engine was warm I got 175 on all cylinders any idea why?

      When engine is warm, the metal expands like your piston and the rings, making it seal better hence more compression

      could be your oil too. my n54 had a leaky injector, pulled the oil and it was very thinned down with gas. shit compression, after new oil, about 180 - 190 inHG all around

    Off topic a little, Do you worry about rod bearings going bad at 200,000 miles given the amount of HP & Torque you are running?

      They very well could but I'd rather leave well enough alone, if you proactively replace the rod bearings you may find that your main bearings all of a sudden go.

      Interesting question actually, I have never compression tested a diesel. I believe you have to remove the injectors or glue plugs and buy a tester rated for higher PSI. I have not owned this car since new, I've had it since 2015 and when it had 140K miles but I could tell it was really well taken care of.

      Wish petrol cost would be in europe as it is in US i would definietly own v6 or v8 . Love the sound of those engines and how they pull from low rev all the way to cut out . Yet got to live with m sport body n47 2.0 diesel . I like how the car handles just put new eibach pro springs and bilstein b4s dampers to replace stock m sport worn out after 130k miles . Also just cleaned intake and removed flaps . Love your videos and calm voice describing . Regards from Poland

      I use Shell Rotella T6 5W40 and change in 5 to 7K miles.

    My N54 is low compression at only 87k :(
    Cylinder 1: 160
    Cylinder 2: 145
    Cylinder 3: 145
    Cylinder 4: 140
    Cylinder 5: 145
    Cylinder 6: 120
    No idea how the motor could lose that much compression at such a low mileage. I had a shop do the test but I was thinking of trying it myself to verify. But as of right now I’m not sure I should even keep the car because of the compression :(

      Are you using a Harbor Freight compression tester? If so I'd toss that and try another one before you worry too much.

      Not for good but they weren't helping with my misfire issue so they're off the car for now. The Eldor coils I have in now are perfectly capable of the power levels I'm at.

    His dumbass must not know Toyota uses plastic intake manifold, pulleys, hoses, radiator end caps, valve covers, expansion tanks, washer fluid, gas tank etc.

    I have three bmw's a 1991 bmw 525i with 233,000 miles, a 1994 bmw 530i with 260,252 miles on it and a 1999 bmw 740il with 212,000 miles on it. I bought the 91 for $6300 back in 2002 with 130,000 miles, If you take care of your cars then can last a long time. cousin had a 1986 or 97 bmw 528ie with 360,000 then a truck totaled his car. My mechanic has a friend has a 3 series with over 1,285,000 plus miles on his car.       For now they're off the car as they only seemed to exacerbate the problem, they're not needed at my current power level so I'll consider putting them back on once I go full E85.

      If anyone doubts this go look up the Mobil E30 325i that had a million miles put on it in lab conditions with factory recommended service intervals.
      Bavarian straight 6’s are one of the most reliable blocks goings.

      H H to an extent I agree, but this is mostly due to the underhanded nature of how they are marketed and sold to entice company car ownership. 15-20k mile intervals are a joke but they shift stock from showrooms and after the first owner is done they could not care less since it will be out of warranty. If you treated a new car with the same regularity of maintenance as the old gold it would continue to be a multiple 100k mile block - without burning oil.

    Clown Scotty, complained that BMs engines don’t have oil dip sticks, because you can check the oil level from the instrumentation without getting out of the drivers seat, a little like an aircraft, bad design hu 😂

    So we all know you don't miss doing any of your maintenance obviously LOL. But we don't really know or get to see how you drive it when you drove it as your daily. I know almost no N54 driver babies his car and doesn't hammer on it a little ever. (What would be the point?). But I think we'd all like to know especially after doing the compression test how you treat the car most of the time? Do you kind of drive with a balance of "A little bit here and little bit there"? Or are you a seriously frightened of hurting the car if you give it more than a teaspoon of fuel from a dig? (LOL just kidding we all know you're not that guy. Ha ha ha!) OR are you hammering the living piston rods out of her with an acceleration and boost addiction that is insatiable and angry at the world for keeping you in the confines of speed limits and freedom stealing cameras all the while knowing that too much rubber on the tires kills little baby squirrels and bunny rabbits that "Ain't not Nevr dun Nutt'n t' nobudy Nohow!!!"? LOL.

      From what I've read they addressed the issue during the production on 2008 cars so I think I have the updated seals. Otherwise if they fail you'll see a video on it.
