I was absolutely thrilled to see that you don't have to remove the handle...those little springs in there are a nightmare to deal with and are always on backorder.
I always thought your never supposed to oil the worm gear. Just use the Shimano Drag Star Grease. Maybe it changed and I have been servicing my reels wrong. Great info and video. Happy Thanksgiving!
The worm drive is plastic I think. Different material than other reels. I did call Shimano and they also said they use thier oil and not grease. The only thing I may question is oiling the ends of the spindle shafts. Definitely don't over oil anything. Shimano reels have very tight tolerances and any extra film of lubrication will decrease the overall performance
@@geckokid1019 yup, figured if I brought it back from the dead after reviewing a bunch of SLX reels, it would help some folks out. That's why I use a lot of "company" clip ins videos I do.

Perfect. Now I have no excuses to do some basic maintenance on my reels this winter! Thanks Gramps!
Should we do this when we first get our reel or does it already come from the factory cleaned and oiled ?
i would definitely oil it, some come oiled, some come dry... because they sit on the shelves for a while
Do you not use grease on the work gear instead of oil? Thanks for the awesome vid
I think it's a personal choice, seen people go both ways
Mine is SLX HG 😅 i think it's the same , is it ?

this came out of the South East Asia Shimano channel, so if it's showing monetized, it's going back to them. Figured they knew what they were doing.
@@FishinwithGRAMPS that makes sense.
Can we use sampe method ofr DC? Since it has electronic chip that is quite easy for short circuit
that one I have no idea about. I have two of the SLX DC XT's and the instructions are in Japanese, lol
Does this method also work for my SLX DC XT? and how often are we supposed to do this?
I would think it would mostly apply, but my instructions came in Japanese only, lol
And my golden rule about when is, if it crosses my mind or I think about it, do it.
@@FishinwithGRAMPS Thank you so much sir! :D
This is handy! Would love something like this for Daiwa reels like a Tat 100 or Tat SV if you own those reels by chance.
I do, I'll be doing a BUNCH of these over the winter
Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for the info.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Can i use reel butter for bearings with this? I'm unsure if we oiled the bearings or the gears haha.
Not sure, but I don't see why not
great video~ and super helpful as i'm about to clean my reel
yeah, it's that time around here to start cleaning up and preparing for next season around here.
Great stuff, Gramps
Can u do a curado dc xg the same way as in this video?
don't have any Curado DC's
can you do one for a spinning reel also? i seemed to have messed up my spinning reel while trying to clean it hehe
You might have to hit "The REEL Test" or "Tackle Advisor" channel if you broke it down that far. I stick to the maintenance basics for beginners.
Does the reel come pre oiled when you first get it?
Because my slx xt has a sound like it’s rubbing on something when i reel.
I normally oil any new reel. You never know how long it's been sitting in some wearhouse.
@@FishinwithGRAMPS Can i use any kind of reel oil with this reel?
Interesting…. So, supposed to clean em? Hmmm…. I’ve got work ahead of me when I get home… 🤣😉 lol. Happy Thanksgiving Gramps n Family!
Especially at the end of the season! If you have Lew's reels, check for the previous videos.
What about the gears within the drag?
beyond my desire to do
Can I use Lucas oil fishing reel oil?
of course! I use it myself
How often should you do this?
I do at the end of every season and any time the reel goes into the water. Which happens quite a bit to kayak anglers
How long to let it dry for
A day normally
Great tutorial
🔥
I thought that you couldn’t get the reel wet with that chip inside of it and I’m very cautious to not get the reel wet
it's protected inside, they'd get smacked by customers if a fishing reel couldn't get wet
My reel has been dropped in the water several times (slx dc) still works good as new with maintenance!
Awesome info
✌🏻
You should grease the worm drive, not oil it.
I always wondered which was better, what brand of grease do you prefer?
This is Shimanos video not his so I think it’s safe to say that they know what they are doing

If that were true Shimano wouldn't send mineral oil to lube the reels with...
This is just shimano’s video
sure is
@@FishinwithGRAMPS ya the most trustful source is the one made by the company

I don’t have any oil can I use something else?
I wouldn't
