  • One of Dean Smith's greatest rivals at North Carolina was Maryland head coach Charles "Lefty" Driesell, who spoke with the WAVY Sports Director Bruce Rader about the man who left one of the greatest legacies in college basketball history.

As a black person in NC in the eighth grade I was watching a Carolina game and I saw a black player on the team, and
I said to myself I like that coach.I have been a Carolina fan every since. Enjoyed all the wins and lost with Coach Smith , but most of all I appreciated the Man. Thank You Coach Smith!!!

I heard Coach Driesell say, “If we are up on Carolina by six, with a minute to go, warm up the bus boys cause we have lost.” Coach Smith pulled out many close games.

Lefty's comments are best appreciated between the lines. He says that Smith was a great recruiter, that his players loved him, in contrast to Driesell's relation with his players, and that he was a politician. What he does not say is that Smith was a good coach. I don't think many Division 1 college coaches could have done much less with the players that he had than Dean Smith did, and I think Lefty would agree with me.

the rivalry between Smith and Lefty can be traced to the recruiting of Charlie Scott. Scott verbally committed to Davidson early in the recruiting period. Smith can in late and stole Scott. Scott went on to star at UNC from 1968-1970... Freshman were not allowed to play during that time.

Lefty was the last one to beat Dean in old Carmichael auditorium and the FIRST to beat Dean in the new "DEAN DOME"

I would have sent my son to play for Coach Wooden or Coach Smith.

Martin, you obviously know very little about Dean, though your ignorance is forgivable, as Dean would have wanted it. But so you know, Dean OWNED Lefty game after game. He also owned Terry Holland, beating those Sampson teams with great schemes. He didn't only win when he had great talent. In fact, he knocked off a few #1s in the NCAA tourney with lesser talent... and superior in-game coaching. Dean wasn't just a great game-coach, he was one of the best. An innovator, a stickler for fundamentals, his ability to teach and motivate played no small part in Jordan's rise to greatness... just ask Michael! But haters like to hate, see what they want to see ... even the smallest minds deserve forgiveness.

      But Valvano beat him strategically.

There were several very good coaches back then. Coach Smith was a great one. He was competitive to the max. His early teams would beat Duke teams with better talent....How, he'd run the four corners. I remember watching a Duke Carolina game that was 12-10 at halftime. I was counting the threads on Dick Devinzio's socks.
