Many of us watched and became fans of Maryland because of Coach Driesell. I loved watching Buck,Albert,Ernest,Greg,Dutch,Reggie in the 80's - the best! Thank you Coach Driesell!

Think about some of the great players that came through that program and possibly the greatest in Len Bias. Lefty was made a scape goat of that tragic situation.

Even though a grand jury found Lefty NOT GUILTY

That was such a tragedy, the way they scapegoated coach Lefty after that. I was Georgetown and Maryland fan from Springfield, VA-- barely a teenager-- and I saw that mess as it happened. That being said, I'm glad to see him get this HOF honor while he's alive

Going to a Maryland BB game in the 70s was awesome. Coach used to really get the crowd into it. McMillan, Lucas, Elmore, Obrien, man those dudes could play!!!

At MD Midnight Madness five years ago, it was a nostalgic night as Lefty, Gary and Turge were on the floor together in a mini plaque ceremony honoring Lefty. Lefty started it all.

Lefty, in my opinion invented College Basketball in the Washington, DC area, John Thompson just perfected it.

What memories I have of Lefty and his teams. No. he never put the ACC trophy on his hood in NC when he won, he said now is not the time. When Duke's K. Dennard undercut Buck Williams without drawing a foul, enabling Duke to win the ACC tournament by 1 point. The President of UMD John Toll went back to congratulate the boys and they were all crying. Something they wanted was stolen from them. They made a decision to boycott the awards ceremony. Lefty yelled, "You guys go out and get what you've earned, even if it ain't fair!" A true Coach/Teacher who would never disrespect the game or his players. Later Dr.Toll had to catch a ride with the Team because of the blizzard in NC that day, and he said the boys had recovered from the lost and were listening to their boomboxes back to College Park in good spirit. BTW, Albert King was tournament MVP.

So many stories. My mom, who attended Md. from 71 to 73(she and one of my brothers were there together) convinced my dad('50) to join the Pep Committee so they could sit on floor at games! Lefty called her 'young lady' and that made her his Super fan. I went to every home game(basketball , football and lacrosse) while a student. Lefty came when I was a junior. He made Md. men's basketball what no one else did. My dad was not a talkative person, sent my then husband and me cassette tapes recounting the games weekly when we moved to Fl. ESPN Radio would broadcast ACC games which we sat in our car to get better reception. Yes, there is a big group here in Central Florida reminscing about Lefty.

@@maryrodon4487 Good to hear from a SUPERFAN! Another story I remember was when Len Bias was caught sneaking out before a DUKE game & got benched! ! ! Lefty asked him during the game, wouldn't it be great if I put you in and we win? YES!!! BUT lesson taught the answer was no, he had broken the rules & had to pay the consequences.

Always liked Lefty as he was fun to watch him. I'll never forget the time he kicked a hole in the wood paneling in the scorer's table during the ACC Tourney in the original Greensboro Coliseum. He was so mad he pulled his foot out of the shoe. Got right back to coaching, shoe still stuck in the scorer's table. I do need to make one correction on SVP's commentary, NC State beat UCLA in the semi-finals of the Final Four, in double OT by 3, they beat Marquette by 12 in the championship game.
