Please use the "Like" button on this comment if you want to see a full uncut video with the variators replacement+timing. A lot of Maserati owners have this issue, but you can't find anywhere a complete video of how it is actually done, where you can see how each part is taken down and then put back together. You can find information and short videos (max. 15-20 minutes) of people that say that they have done it and maybe include a short time-lapse, but I'd rather watch a full uncut video of the whole process. 20 hours, 40 hours, a series of 1 hour videos - I don't care about the format, just please-please make it. Great job!
Eventually I will do that, I have been searching too! However I am hoping I may not have to do it for a while. She has been in the air on jacks for three weeks so I am looking forward to just driving again.
I was impressed by the video. I'm planning to use the ACCUMELATOR made by FOA on eBay. However, I'm a little worried about the small orifice diameter. There seems to be a lot of oil inside the engine, but will the engine's oil be filled and pressure be generated just by the power of the accumulator?
I cannot speak for FOA, but my accumulator has a litre capacity and when I press the dump button, the oil pressure light on the dashboard goes out for a couple of seconds, so it must be enough pressure to satisfy the oil pressure switch.
@@SailingSVPipedream I see, thank you very much. If I leave the car alone for a while, will the oil port become empty? (Even if you open the lid, no oil comes out?)
@@sworkscar When I was installing mine, I removed the plug in the oil gallery and it was dry in there. The oil gallery is quite large and drains quickly. With the accumulator installed. I went on holiday and did not start the car for five weeks. When I got back I checked the accumulator and it still had 60psi, so was still full of oil under pressure. I don’t know how long it would keep oil pressure, but I reckon up to 6 months at least.
Hi. Do you know if the cam cover/cam catch (the part that gets added with a check valve) can be removed and reinstalled without messing up the timing? I want to send the covers off for DIY but don’t want to mess with the timing.
Hi, yes the cam caps can be removed without touching the timing chains or timing. I think the wisdom is that in a number of cases this helps. However if variators are worn (the variators have notches that were not hardened enough or poor design) then noise will still happen. Having said this, my accumulator has completely stopped the issue. So in reason this must be why doing check valves can fix the problem as well as if the variators get oil pressure at engine start, then they will not make the noise.
I think I will have to give this a try. Was this a complete kit or did you piece it together? My QP has had the check valves down well before my time. Like you, I just want to buy some time until I can get the Varrators done. I had to chuckle when you said buy some time months or years... 😂. Have to wait till the warmer weather here, but will give it a go. Keep up the good work 👍
QP owner? Lovely cars. I hear the Maserati Club UK is planning a celebration of 60 years of the QuattroPorte at this year’s Salon Privé Club Day on August 31st at Blenheim Palace.
Hi, I had to piece it all together. I got the accumulator from APPD and the other bits from Matt Lewis. I am hoping to have her back on her wheels this week, so will have more knowledge of how well it has worked soon. So far so good though, now if I can just get enough clearance to get the engine mounts out…
Engine numbers from 148697 have oil valves, but old variators. Engine numbers from 150070 have oil valves and new variators. Ps: are the last 5 digits of the VIN number also the engine number?

I will take a look in a bit and see about the VIN number.
No. VIN and engine number are not related
Damn that little job cost more than my old astra at 400 quid lol
Yes, it was painful! However no noise now and changing the variators is really painful.
You must love that car... kind of like a violent, alcoholic girlfriend. Seems like a good fix to me. Cheers
Yes and the Ford is getting jealous! I am hoping to have some more time for her soon. Fitting motorbike mudguards now.
Your guitar sounded great!

I think RUclips are wise to promoting now and will remove the views. They often also then demote the video so it is counterproductive
