I like the "general plan" quiz instead of just looking for the winning tactic, but would prefer still doing it by move choice according to the rating grades. I think it would be good to include one position in which the answer isn't a decisive tactic but just general improvement of the position, that would be very interesting to see the difference between players at different levels and would make for informative explanation of the position.
I think best would be a combination of both ─ first choose the plan, then write down the exact move. This way we can see the thought process behind people's choices. In addition, I would really love to see positions where there are multiple feasible moves, just to see the difference in style between different ratings.
@@maxkho00 the only problem with the multiple choice plans is that is guides the viewer by making suggestions, so they're not really making a free choice. Definitely love the quiz format! This is one of the best things I've seen on a Chess channel and I love seeing how players stronger rated than me would approach a position.
I really like the idea of the different plans to choose from! I think everybody has done a lot of normal puzzles and it's really refreshing to see something new and original. And from what I've seen, a lot of beginners (me included) struggle to find a plan for the middle game, so these kind of "middle game plan puzzles" are really helpful.
I loved the third quiz about general plans. If possible might I suggest some more closed or endgame positions where the answer isn't so much about tactics but getting your pieces to better places. I'd also suggest some more losing positions, where the goal isn't as much to get a winning position or a perpetual, but covering weaknesses and avoiding checkmate as best as you can.
The third quiz where we have to decide the correct plan was the most interesting and the most helpful to me. I like that you include both types of quiz, pick the best move is fun, good for capturing interest, but the decide the right plan was like the icing on the cake.

Excellent quiz format. Love the general plan options. My idea in the third was to push my white bishop back and make a battery (second best option?). Very fun.
I like you re quiz a lot! thanks :) For the more general formulae you used for the 3rd here, i think its a good way to do it. In this particular instance, i found it was too easy (for me) to find out. The choosing of the choice we have to pick is the hardest part for you. Make more, we'll be able to appreciate better the formulae.
100%! And for the right reasons which I’m proud of. Second puzzle was crazy difficult though. I wasnt convinced we were winning after we win back the bishop.
Re the multiple choice question (which I imagine is more work to create), I think what people wanted was less to be given a choice of plan but rather to have to work out which move to make in cases where there are no clear tactical considerations pointing to a best move. The opposite of what you did, in other words: don't spell out the plans yourself, but do choose a position where there are no immediate tactics. I really appreciate your commitment to improving this series, by the way: it was good from the beginning, but you keep working on making it better, which is great!
there's one correction to be made: After the same position has appeared three times, the game is only a draw if one of the players claims it. It neither site wants a draw or if noone realizes, the game goes on. It is an immediate draw after the same position has been reached 5 times. In that case, the arbiter would have to stop the game and it's immediately over
I really like the new general plan puzzle! However I think one reason that a lot of players gave the right answer is because they could see why a kingside attack would be the right answer, but actually don't have a concrete idea how to execute it. So perhaps you could let them submit a move per usual, but the 'explain your move' would be a multiple-choice option. I think that would also help get a better insight in why each rating group chose a move. It doesn't appear yet that it's very clear what the differences in thought process are between ratings, especially this episode where all rating groups gave similar answers for all questions.
@@KARTIKEYA007 People who do that are cheating themselves really. I also doubt how many people actually do that considering we've had puzzles in previous episodes where less than 20% gave the right answer.
@@wavelino1668 Dude I am sure most people are doing it now. Idk man, people in the 0-1000 category often miss very simple tactics, i can't believe they can see lines like Qh5

At 2:11, black has two moves which prevent mate, and save the c5 bishop. He can play Qf5, or even better, Bf5!! In both cases, if white plays Bxf5, which is logical, black can fork queen and bishop, winning some material bacl
Nice idea but it doesn't quite work. In both cases after white gets forked, white can play Bxg6 , threatening mate again and after black recaptures the bishop with either the queen or the pawn white can play Qxc5 again, so this idea just allows white to win an extra pawn
Hooray! I got two right this time. That's two more than on last week's lol. I liked the #3 multiple choice, general strategy question. Maybe start throwing those in as a 4th bonus question? I really like this series a lot. Actually, I prefer this over guess the Elo (nothing against levy, love his channel too). I just started playing chess in March of this year so it's really helpful for me to see different thought processes.

One positional puzzle per quiz is great. However, this position had a tactical sacrifice that was too tempting. So in effect it was a tactical puzzle with one right answer. Would prefer a fully positional puzzle. As Tartakower said “Tactics is knowing what to do when there is something to do. Strategy is knowing what to do when there is nothing to do.” Would be interesting to ask: "Other than attacking black's kingside, what is the best strategic approach?" I sure don't know.
I very much like the format for the third question, general tactical advice instead of just puzzles. Besides the fact that it's interesting, for those of us of lower ELO, it helps us learn what general strategy to employ when a position doesn't seem to have any critical moves. Admittedly, we are not always in a position where one move grabs some outstanding advantage, but even for that, it's easy enough to find puzzles to solve. General strategy given a position in the middle-game is an area less touched upon, so I hope you keep it going forward.
I like the idea with 1 position being about the general plans. This week's positions were a bit easier than most of the previous weeks imo but still fun to solve. Position 2 was an especially fun one seeing the perpetual and also seeing the checkmates if the King steps out. :)
If there is position about general plans there has to be an option "x goes brrr..." where x is minor piece or pawn. It's the biggest chess wisdom compressed to echoism. You can't include more information about chess in that amount of words.
Hey Nelson! I loved trying to find a plan instead of just a tactic, as I am relatively decent at finding tactics, but I am absolutely atrocious at positional play. I'm by no means good at tactics either, just better at them compared to positional play. Thanks for all you do, loving your channel. Have an awesome day!
@@ChessVibesOfficial Love the great content Nelson, I would just hope for harder puzzles in the future though. Today's last puzzle was a bit more obvious than expected and the rating distribution statistics didn't have any meaning as every category inclined to find the same moves.
I like the "general idea" quiz and would keep it as it is. Thanks for the video, it is my favorite chess content apart from Seirawan and Finegold lectures.
Yes. The format is good, but the bishop sacrifice tactic was kind of too devastating. It would fit the move selection format better. Edit: It is only completely devastating if black takes the bait (the bishop). In fact, Stockfish (Lichess on mobile) found a faster mate for white than shown here. But it also showed how black could escape from the worst trouble while white would retain a mainly positional advantage. I wish some time were spent showing that in the video too.
I like the idea of having both types of questions. You need to be able to find good moves and you also need to be able to think long term so having both types of positions makes sense to me.
gg guys, we win theeeese, got all the plans tho, maybe wasnt checking all the vars after f3 in pos.2 but... funny thing about mate in 20+, was just pretty sure about an advantage after Bxh6 gxh6 Qxh6 and something like f5 or just winning pawn on h6 in case that black wont take it, sooo. yea, it was good, thanks for the vid.
One thing that could make it better for beginners is having short clips of players on that Elo level tell us why they picked the move. Just mini interviews.
Hi Nelson, I like the plans idea. But I also like the existing tactical style too. Maybe you can mix it up every then and now. BTW, love your channel. Plz keep doing it.

The multiple-choice positional plans for the third game was very instructive content in that it helps develop positional strength instead of just tactics.
Hey Nelson, I just saw your series and I really enjoy it. Keep it up. On the third position I saw the bishop sacrifice and the mate threats. My rapid elo rating is 1200
2:21 bishop f5 for black stops the fork. If the queen tries to go to h7 then bishop takes. It also defends the other bishop by blocking and its protected by the queen
I think that the 3 puzzle types positions are really fun and interesting and that format works really well, but at the same time it’s good to have some positional ideas so maybe something like 3 puzzle and 1/2 positionals would be really fun if that’s not too much work on your part
I like the addition of the general plan section, however, I think this position was too obvious. I'm a 900 rated player and the tactics to attack the king were quite obvious even to me. would love to see a general plan section for a more tactically complex position
Agreed, personally, I feel like plan suggestions are lazy and don't necessarily force you to calculate longer variations which I think brings down the educational value of this great series. Having both plans and moves is fine, but the percentages/stats should be accounted for the moves imo.
First time getting all 3 right! I think it could be interesting in the future if some of the positions were a positional idea rather than a tactical one or a plan, potentially so that there are a number of good moves but one or two are better positionally than others.
Stockfish doesn't check all possible lines, so it can be off on mate in X where X is rather large. Though I've seen it call a mate in 4 as a mate in 5 as well. If you increase the search depth, it also increases the search breadth and will usually show you the shorter mate if there is one.
Great stuff! If you could find positions in which the top players are vastly more likely to pick the winning move, or even positions in which lower rated players choose the wrong move or plan, that would offer another sort of valuable insight.
I like the plan idea a lot but concur that best move should also be in the question. I also enjoyed the slightly tougher questions from the past quizzes, I personally felt these were a hair too simple. 1500 elo player fwiw. Love this series!!
Great video, Proud to say I found the top move in all of them, I actually picked Bxh6 in the last puzzle as my move before you said it was more about the plan than specific move.

Like this format. Thank you.
Love the new section at the end!
Hey Nelson! I loved trying to find a plan instead of just a tactic, as I am relatively decent at finding tactics, but I am absolutely atrocious at positional play. I'm by no means good at tactics either, just better at them compared to positional play. Thanks for all you do, loving your channel. Have an awesome day!
Sorry., but the position he gave was pure tactics . Even beginner would see bxh6
Thanks, Happy 👍
@@ChessVibesOfficial Love the great content Nelson, I would just hope for harder puzzles in the future though. Today's last puzzle was a bit more obvious than expected and the rating distribution statistics didn't have any meaning as every category inclined to find the same moves.
I like the "general idea" quiz and would keep it as it is.
Thanks for the video, it is my favorite chess content apart from Seirawan and Finegold lectures.
i liked the idea of having strategical positions, but i think we should keep trying to guess the right move instead of choosing a plan
Perfect tempo and order right now, really appreciated!!
"don't come back til you see the mate in 18!"
*RUclips Analytics says 99% of viewers watched only 15 minutes of this video*
I really like the format of question 3. Middlegame plans seem to be a bit of a sticking point for a lot of players, including myself.
The best plan idea is great, especially early mid game, the “what should I do now?” problem.
gg guys, we win theeeese, got all the plans tho, maybe wasnt checking all the vars after f3 in pos.2 but... funny thing about mate in 20+, was just pretty sure about an advantage after Bxh6 gxh6 Qxh6 and something like f5 or just winning pawn on h6 in case that black wont take it, sooo. yea, it was good, thanks for the vid.
One thing that could make it better for beginners is having short clips of players on that Elo level tell us why they picked the move. Just mini interviews.
I loved the last scenario with the options!
Hi Nelson, I like the plans idea. But I also like the existing tactical style too. Maybe you can mix it up every then and now. BTW, love your channel. Plz keep doing it.
Fascinating. I played the potions by the way before watching the video really interesting.
Suggestion of the best plan sounds great. It helps you think.
Really, really enjoyed quiz7. That last position is insane!
I love the new multiple choice style of questions!
Okay, so old video, new comment. I like the format of the "attack plan". Very fun to do these puzzles, as well as watching you explain them!
this idea of choosing a plan was great! it is the kind of stuff i get wrong most of the my games.
Look at that subscriber base only seemed like yesterday you were at 20k now 45k . Your blowing up man - Good to see you deserve it.
Anybody here if because of Covid stuffing them up financially or for whatever reason you cannot offer to support 💲💲💲at least promote Nelson where ever you can
I leave the links and suggestions all over the net particularly when it’s a beginner- intermediate player asking about improving and chess content. Even playing on chess sites I drop his name. Least I can do for his great content!!!!
Just thought I would put that out there.
favorite series on all of youtube, can’t wait for you to get a massive cult following!
The multiple-choice positional plans for the third game was very instructive content in that it helps develop positional strength instead of just tactics.
Today, not exactly, cus bxh6 was just a tactic at the end of the day, but it would be positional if the positions are chosen accordingly..
i liked the way you asked what our plan would be, because theres more opportunity for different choices
I like the multiple choice, it gave me the opportunity to think more thoroughly of solutions.
Perhaps you could have us input multiple moves as a form of plan as a way to do general plan instead of just tactical stuff. Love the content!
These chess lessons are very good. They stimulate a viewer's ability to think coherently and clear. The quizzes are very helpful.
Love the general plan idea. It helps to know that my initial feelings aren't totally squirrely.
The last one I liked but I didnt see bishop takes. Thats the sprt of skill expression I think is so cool to see
Great video, Proud to say I found the top move in all of them, I actually picked Bxh6 in the last puzzle as my move before you said it was more about the plan than specific move.
I like the general plan as the second position. That way, the original puzzle/tactic is still there because that's what we originally liked and that's what we get in the beginning and end of the video bjt we have this new multiple choice one in the middle.
I like both types of questions. All of it is great :D
Very good instruction. I like both methods; i.e., multiple choice and positional quiz.
