    #itsaboutthem #justaddwater #readingsmoke
This week we get to use our Reading Smoke skills as we watch the impact of fire growth on the VVDC of the smoke. As the fire progresses the VVDC gets worse. What will be the impact of water application? Here we get to see the impact. Significant volumes of billowing white smoke (steam) with a rapid and sustained decrease in smoke velocity and density.
While either of these may, or may not, influence your decision making at this fire the reason we practice Reading Smoke through video analysis is to build a large slide deck of visual images in our mind. With each addition your ability to understand what is happening when you arrive on the fireground, and, by extension, make good decisions, improves.

Rockwool insulation should somehow be made more affordable and implemented into all new homes, and remodels. Especially in attics. And rockwool panels to cover all exposed wooden structure. All celings should be 5/8 inch drywall if not double 5/8 inch.

Great stuff. However, could use a better mic or more volume. You're very quiet in the video. Thanks for doing these!

Thanks for being part of the Reading Smoke Nation and the positive feedback. The newer videos should have better audio. I've been learning as I go.

I feel like the popular thing to do over the last couple years has been to make fun of the exterior attack. (the hit it hard from the front yard gang). And i feel like that's scared a lot of people from making smart transitional attacks. There are several reasons that might delay an aggressive interior attack, and I think, unpopular as it might be, that a more aggressive transitional attack is way under utilized. How many videos do you watch and you see the fire come out the window, up the siding, into the eaves, and then the whole attic is on fire... Usually while crews are pulling lines, getting packs on... A quick transitional attack could've bought you enough time to get inside before it travels uninhibited to the attic.... Sometimes...

Can't disagree that some folks are speaking against the tactic. Doesn't make sense to me. There are times and places where it is absolutely the best way to achieve the mission. Well trained firefighters and company officers should know their craft and take the fastest route to saving a life. That will be, at least sometimes, outside water. Doesn't really matter how anyone 'feels' about it. Do the best for those you serve. Good on you for recognizing the many ways to skin the cat.
