POC helmets are the ugliest. They look like they were designed by Soviet brutalist style architects in 1950. In Soviet Russia you don't wear POC helmet, POC helmet wear you (out)
That descent from Empire into PC is one of the fastest descents in the country. On the final mile stretch, straight on, -10% grade at over 8000', it's easy eclipse 65 mph without a tuck. Railing that without traffic, without the stop sign, without the traffic circle traffic... what a thrill that would be!
It's always interesting to me that there's still so much vegetation at that altitude. In this part of Europe the tree line is at about 1600-1700 meters(about 5000ft) and there's mostly bare rock with occasional grass patches over 2200m (about 6500ft)
Here in California our tree line is mostly around 8,000ft(2,500m). It can go all the way up to 12,000ft(3,500m) though. On my last trip to Alaska I could have sworn the tree line was no higher than 4,000ft(1,200m). Pretty crazy how much It changes.
Love seeing my favorite local segments. That one is so tough after coming up Big Cottonwood with 3000' climbing already in there legs when the segment starts. Utah mountains really have some amazing places to ride.
I used to live behind Brighton HS, and would start that ride from my house. Big up and down and then out to Millcreek canyon, up down and back. One serious 70 miler.
Big .cottonwood Canyon is NOT 14% anywhere, neither is Guardsman pass section. Coming up from Midway toward Guardsman or doing up from Park City via Empire pass to Guardsman can hit 14% but not the entire way.
Great job Phil. Great stories. You're inspiring me to finish Triple ByPass ride in Colorado tmrw. Top of loveland pass just under 12,000 ft. Park City ski resort needs to allow rv overnight parking in at least one of their parking lots in summer. Would like to both road and mtb there. Cheers.
My favorite bike tour is one I have done twice. It's a week long ride starting in Moab and riding to the five national parks plus the Grand Canyon. Utah is simply spectacular from the seat of a bicycle. I can' even imagine myself going up some of the inclines at the speed Phil achieves. How does he put out so many watts for such a long period of time?
Perhaps Phil should have used the "outro" music at the beginning of the video. I recognized it immediately. It just happens to be the theme introduced before a set of wonderful variations at the beginning of the Sonata in A major K. 331 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. If you can spare about 20 minutes, I recommend listening to the whole work. Do a RUclips search on "Mozart K. 331".
When i lived in SLC I used to use big and sometimes Guardsman as a training ride. Once I rode down the back end to PC. I called a buddy "hey man, there's no way I'm gonna make it up the backside" to which he replied " one foot in front of the next". Hardest ride back ever. The top 1.5mi of the backside is all gravel at 14%, no bueno
I love the videos, love the drone footage, and hope your drone never ever crashes, but I also have the Skydio2 and be mindful that it has trouble with power lines - pretty sure DD crashed his on Mandy bc of that.
Free advertising for Phil: I just got done reading Draft Animals after finding it at Powell's when visiting Portland, and it is soooo good! I wish everyone could read it, but I'd say cyclists and especially racers would get the most out of it. Super good read.
Phil! Not only do I love your videos/the channel, but your taste in kits is impeccable. Any chance there are more of the Neon/Purple cookie caps lying around? I want to snag the whole kit! Cheers!
Dude, that's the easy side of Gaurdsman. Go for the KOM on the Strava segment entitled, "Midway to Top O Guardsman". Or if you want a shorter segment, the sub-section "Pine Canyon Road - Wow Exit to Wow Entrance".
The altitude is pretty hard to comprehend. The only way to get above 7300ft in Australia is to fly. In my state (Queensland) the highest peak is 5300ft (Mt Bartle Frere, no road to the top) and one of only a few above 4000ft. It’s a big flat expanse.
It's a skydio drone I think, look it up. It flies itself and has a cool auto follow feature. I think it's linked to a gps sensor that Phil has in his jersey, or his phone. You can tell because it follows him after that near miss even though it's not focusing on him, then once the drone spots him it zooms back down to his level.
Seeing you a pro looking spent after 325w for 14 minutes made me feel a little happy about myself but then again, I never rode at 9000ft so my power would be closer to (-80 formula) 245w up there then, yikes.
Can you do videos on weight, eating, training or recommend? I bought your books so maybe there is info there. Diet vs miles wrt to weight ? I suspect 50-50. Thoughts on keto, Paleo, protein and veggie and lo glycemic. Would you ever discuss how you would have done if you doped or others didn’t? Eg how good was Greg lemond who claims not to have doped and was pre epo so his times are a good comparison perhaps. How do you compare to a clean Tom Danielson?
You flat landers crack me up! Living in Boulder, you get used to up to 10k feet. You should try the Mt Evans Kom riding to 14k feet. That when I really notice the power drop off above the 12k level from altitude.
Any tips? YES!!! How about ride single file up a single lane mountain road with cars! Number one reason why people in cars hate us bike riders is exactly what you are doing. Thanks for creating more bike hate. You should know better by now. Hug that white line on your left, give cars more space so they do not have to cross over into on comming traffic or follow you at 8mph. Smarten up! Filming a youtube video does not constitute this kind of reckless behavior.
That catlike helmet is truly one of the ugliest things to ever exist
facts brandon
Have you ever seen a monkfish?
I can't even look at it.
POC helmets are the ugliest. They look like they were designed by Soviet brutalist style architects in 1950. In Soviet Russia you don't wear POC helmet, POC helmet wear you (out)
@@TonyRedunzo Totally agree, POC helmets are ridiculous.
Lachy was and is a beast. Thanks for the stories

Whoa. I never knew that! Tree line here in Colorado (and Utah for the matter) is generally around 11,500 ft.
Here in California our tree line is mostly around 8,000ft(2,500m). It can go all the way up to 12,000ft(3,500m) though. On my last trip to Alaska I could have sworn the tree line was no higher than 4,000ft(1,200m). Pretty crazy how much It changes.
The tree line in the Adirondacks is somewhere around 5000 feet.
Partly this is due to an increase in latitude
But here in the swiss alps the tree line has raised in the last years to around 2000m (6500 feet).

Love the Lachlan story. If the opportunity ever presents, you gotta get him for a ride video , maybe him stealing a KOM or two from you :) .
I did that climb like a week ago. One of my favorite climbs
Big .cottonwood Canyon is NOT 14% anywhere, neither is Guardsman pass section. Coming up from Midway toward Guardsman or doing up from Park City via Empire pass to Guardsman can hit 14% but not the entire way.
Video quality is outstanding. Utah is on another level. Sublime. I like how you threw Eric Young under the bus for helping You steal the poster. 🥴
It was gratitude!

Well done Phil. That was close.
I hope you climb Little Cottonwood Canyon! Its a little beast!
Great to meet you at the Ritual Chocolate Cafe! Looks like you had some great rides! Keep the videos coming! - Dustin
Hey Phil, you should try an Everesting attempt with an average elevation above 10,000 ft. ;)
Great video Phil
Unbelievable scenery. Wow. Well done on the KOM Phil.

sounds amazing. post a route?
I love every part of this channel, minus the outro music. Great effort Phil look forward to seeing you on the road one day!

Nice one! That last mile y'all are calling 14% is actually 9.3%, though... (that segment starts at 9:23 in the vid)

Its all paved now
@@padeiro11 The hardest rides I ever had were in the Wasatch.
Nice work, one of my favorite climbs! Phil is a good dude, going to donate!
Thank you! Please use the link in my description!
Gorgeous Washington representing!!!

Love that Utah content
Beautiful, Phil.

Ah everything we have is on the website!
Timed the ride perfectly... too much smoke to ride this week!
do cottonwood pass in Buena Vista CO, tops out at 12k ft
Seeing Phil smash a ride I do often really puts his abilities into perspective
Same here
Another one for the old guys! Nice ride, nice drone shots, and that scenery! It's two thumbs up for me. Cheers!
Draft Animals - Great book!
Can't believe this man is doing 15mph up a 5 percent grade LOL. Jesus
Good climbing Phil. Utah looks lovely. I may move there.
Ehh I live in SLC. Lovely place but do your research first
Good one!
Great; love your background comments on pro ($10/day) career. Looking forward to your book!!!
Thanks for being a fan of FE... hope you like the new brand Mike and I designed.
Drone footage is really good. Congrats on the kom.

I just road from midway to Guardsman last week for the first time! So hard!
@@andrewbird6966 Kudos! Forget the Strava KOM, I'm impressed with anyone who can get up that thing on a bicycle (without e-boost;) )
Love ya, Phil...thanks fir keeping it real

Taking a five-year-old KOM, that's some tough riding.
Great view and KOM Phil. How do you keep your drone from colliding with power lines. Looks like it almost hits at 8:08

You should hit up some of the sick DH trails on that bike while you're there!
Dude fell on a velodrome and almost broke everything, I don't want him dodging rocks next.
"There's gonna be just cheese left and that's for children"
Damn, he's just gonna come after us all like that
You did it for the pizza lol “ cheese is for children” best story yet
At the end of your videos when that hymn-like song plays I feel like church service is now ending
It’s Mozart. I did that because people complained about my music choice so I wanted something no one could complain about
Congrats! Not only did you get the KOM, you beat Mancebo.
Definitely should have done the full downhill speed start.
Damn, I need to go ride out there

So beast! Nice 👍🏼
Cookie man with the mutant watts! 🔥
Do you go faster if you are not carrying the extra weight of a heart rate strap?
Love the KOM attacks!
Cheese pizza is my first choice. Similarly, vanilla is my first ice-cream flavor.

Welcome to Utah! The other side of the hill is the truly evil side.
"As you can see, my power is not pretty." Um, no, Phil, it's beautiful.
Sound first few min??
Yeah!!!!
What happened to Preem tv
I don’t know why but that white helmets creeps me out
AAA+ awesome
UTAH
eleventybillion links in the description and not one for the drone. wompwomp!
They’ve gotta sponsor me for that :)
The segment is the drop fasted speed on it was 2013 tour of Utah Matt hit 84mph if i remember correctly
I luv listening to pro stories..
Talansky was flying........................that's because he was high.......
