i met Nikki twice. once in london 82 (at Mike Scotts pad) - and then i saw him by chance in NYC march 05 playing live and met him afterwards for a 2nd time. Funny thing was he remembered me from all those years ago. Chilled me thoroughly when i found out he had died that same night... A Great guy. Lived his life by his rules. A true rock n roller/punkster.. untainted.
Yes. He had the courage and conviction to do that, and we’re glad for it. But it could have been a much longer life if he’d just given up the worst of the drugs. And it broke his parents’ hearts after losing Epic. Nikki was the kind of songwriter who would have written great lyrics about all stages of life and all the things he would have seen and experienced had he lived. We do have, fortunately, a pretty extensive record of his work, and we’re glad for that. I wish the album he did with Rowland S Howard, though, wasn’t astronomically expensive- Kiss you Kidnapped Charablanc (am i botching the spelling there).
Very bittersweet reading all the comments here. So many ppl obviously have great memories of the dude and I will never get the chance to meet him because I was 4 or so years old when he passed away. It makes me wonder however how many of my favourite musicians who are relatively obscure are contactable.
Another great singer songwriter who died too early. I would have liked to see him live and The Jewel Thief is one of the most overlooked albums released in 1991!
@televisionlighter - yep, playing with Alan Merrill, who wrote 'I Love Rock'n'Roll' - Nikki having fun with a borrowed Fender. The vid of that is maturing in my vault - I will get around to posting it one day soon.
@televisionlighter - i hapenned to be in nyc that night, and i too went to knitting factory (had been to see psych furs singer r butler earlier in canal st). i too saw start of gossip..then realised nikki must be playing in another room,. went upstairs and caught his gig. excellent . evan dando guesting on guitar. .. nice.. rip nikki.
nobody knows, who he was...that was his mystery....i loved his humanity, when i heard him four times ineurope,germany....and we smoke beautiful cigarretes, within a dream for our time.
I got to see Nikki once...at the second last show he ever played. I asked him if he could play "Elizabethan Balladeer" but he said he couldn't rememeber all the words. He was so kind and polite. He told me he'd seen T. Rex over twenty times yet he'd never seen the Faces. I would have loved to have gotten to know him and play him the song I wrote that this song inspired. A friend called me at work to tell me the news of his passing. I couldn't believe it. I still can't...
I know I’m 11 years late to this discussion but. . . A lovely memory of him. Interesting that he never caught the Faces. He did come to know Ron Wood and was writing a biography of him, I believe.

Wow what a version.. We were staying at his apartment at that time because we were kinda homeless. Nikki was so generous.

RIP Nikki - I remember very well the days we stood together and waiting that they will open the doors for the rolling stones shows in Europe
