- As some of you may know, one of our instructors was present at Panoplia Iberica, an iberian event as the name implies that gathered not only instructors from across Portugal and Spain but also from other countries. I won't go into a lot of detail here as there will be a larger post about it.
I would rather want this video to be the highlight and not the description. A smallsword sparring session between our instructor Rui and none other than David Pascal himself. It was a massive challenge to go up against such an experienced fencer, quick on his feet and on his bladework as well, but an utmost pleasure nevertheless. There's so much to be said about the experience fencing him and what one learns but I'll leave that for another time.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Being able to see this much deft and delightful fencing from both players here made me feel like a kid at the carnival, especially with so much uninterrupted footage. David was a pleasure to watch as ever, but it takes two artists to put on such a display, so my thanks for this video must go to Rui as well!

É muito bom ver que no Brasil cada vez mais há pessoas interessadas nas tradições de seus ancestrais. Como um amigo costuma dizer, o brasão da nossa república contém uma espada e não uma bola de futebol!
Por cá infelizmente ainda não podemos dizer o mesmo, talvez um dia quando houver um mudar de mentalidades maior isto consiga crescer mais em Portugal. Tudo a correr bem convosco ;)

This is fascinating! Are they fencing with floret rules or why are there so few attacks to the extremities? The discipline of the fencers in keeping measure makes their match exquisite!😍
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. David is indeed a foil/floret fencer but also a hemaist same as myself. Following a more HEMA approach I don't believe neither of us was with the mindset of "scoring" points for the sake of scoring but rather trying to go for more lethal target areas that in a "real" scenario could potentially end the fight. Hence going for deeper targets like torso or head. - Rui

como deberia ser esto en aquella epoca en la que los dos espadachines, probablemente contratados por la nobleza para dirimir una disputa, se acuchillaban en el claustro de un convento a medianoche, con las monjas de clausura con su cuenco de palomitas para la ocasion, uno salia con los pies por delante y el otro se "acogia a sagrado" para que no lo prendiese la guardia.
