  • Coilovers are a pricy and uncommon modification for the 99-04 cobra mustangs. For the autocross and track enthusiast, coilovers offer large performance gains over stock spring set-ups. However, for owners who do not track their cobras, the price tag of coilover kits for these cars might be too much to justify buying them.
This video will compare the different suspension set-ups for the 99-04 cobras. It will also detail the maximum motorsports coilover kit and compare that to other coilover kits and spring set-ups.
Hopefully after watching this video you prospective coilover buyers have a better understanding of what you can expect from these kits and have a better understanding of whether coilovers are worth the purchase.

I wish I went with coilovers... Or an air suspension. But the H&R lowering springs work fine for me. Just totally feel the fitment issues when things don't work out. Ended up doing the low profile IRS bolts and rolled my rear fenders to fit a 315 tire. 😸Hooks and books baby!

The #1 reason why I didn't go with coilovers on a 2003 Cobra is due to the way the rear coilover is designed...I haven't looked at them in a long time but what I didn't like was the lower shock/coilover attachment bolt in the rear was attached in 100% shear to an aluminum control arm. It wasn't confidence inspiring. Are yours this way? How are they holding up?

Thanks for this video. Getting ready to start on my rear end and didn’t consider clearance issues with the wheels.

thanks for the helpful video, where'd you get that steering wheel wrap? I noticed it in the interior shots and it looks like it would be way better than the worn down material on mine

I bought my car with H&R springs and wide rear tires and it’s such a perfect setup! It rides awesome and it’s pretty slammed looking! Not too low but it has that perfect aggressive look to it. Wouldn’t want to go any lower or higher!

Thanks for the video! I was looking for a review like this for a while to address some of the concerns I had like the spring not being preloaded. I ended up ordering the Bilstein HD kit with 300 lb/ft front and 500 lb/ft rear for my 2001 Cobra. What size wheels and tires are you running and did you have clearance issues? Any annoying noises from the coilovers?
PS - looks like you're in AZ? If you are maybe you can tell me how to get started with autocross here!?

I went with MM2 shocks/struts and 400 lbs front 750 lbs rear on a 99 SVT Cobra setup for road course track and limited street
One must get Front and Rear Bump Steer kits for keep their tie rods working properly (in tandem) with their A arm geometry especially under suspension compression and rebound travel so that you wheels especially the rear wheels on an IRS don't make any major toe in and out changes greatly effecting your steering/handling in corners and heavy braking in a wild n craZy manner plus killing tire wear
And if you also want proper handling, you are limited as to what height you can set your car. The height for best (well actually any) performance is limited to what works best for your A arm & tie rod geometry and what can be corrected with a bump steer kit or a modified/upgraded K member

I love MM but if your buying coil over kit and dampers at the same time they should come assembled

I had MM coilovers on the front of my car and didn't care for them much.

Great review. Im patiently waiting on my MM coilover kit for my 99 Gt. I went with 325 front 200 rear paired up with Bilstein dampening. I wanted an in between of performance and ride quality. Also my rear spring rate is lighter than the front because i do not have IRS.

The MM kit is going to be a huge improvement over stock, don’t think you’ll be disappointed!
