Brazil has its share of problems like the rest of the world, but Brazilians are some of the nicest people you will find, period! I went to college in Brooklyn, NY with an Afro Brazilian. Does it really matter what race someone thinks you are? Being mixed people have assumed I was all type of different races. I liked it because when a Baddy would approach to ask me what I was I made sure I took advantage of the opportunity, The confidence I exhibited, along with my conversation and my game took me from first base to home plate.

26:42 I'm sure what you heard was Portuguese but in a strong, regional dialect. It's the same as if a foreigner visits the US and travels from say, New York to rural Tennesee. I'm sure what they speak in Tennesee will sound like a whole 'nother language. I, as a learner of Portuguese, also have a hard time understanding Portuguese if it doesn't have a Rio or Sao Paulo accent. I had a hard time understanding locals when you posted your video in Bahia.

Take into consideration that it's a little bit different if a regular countryman asks you for a help vs a foreigner, that is clearly lost and has a language barrier. Many people would turn out to be more helpful than usual in the 2nd scenario. Not taking the credit for what she did, she was amazing, but that might not have been the case if a Brazilian approached her.

Regarding your question about the way they were speaking Portuguese in Belo Horizonte, there's no difference in the Portuguese spoken there or anywhere in Brazil. What you do have are regional accents: the accent from the northeast, from Rio, from Sao Paulo, from the south and the one from minas gerais which you were referring. Of all of them, the one from minas gerais is the most melodic, cozy and charming. You weren't understanding probably because you were tired or stressed or confused. I'm sure it would be ok for you in a few hours or days. Cheers.
