Teslas in a Coma | Gruber Motors

- In this video, we explore a design flaw in the first Tesla vehicle, the Roadster, that allows a main battery pack to slip into a coma.
What precipitates this condition is an absence of charging, and dependent on starting charge level, can happen within a couple of months.
Companies like us routinely revive a Roadsters in this condition, but it requires a trip to our Service Center.
Fortunately, this is the only Tesla vehicle with this flaw.
Make sure you view this video until the very end for a surprising revelation.

This is great news for all the original Roadster owners and fans! Hopefully Tesla will announce the 3.0 program or at least let owners know it exists shortly.
The original roadsters are still doing there job, and that’s making electric cars cool.
I spent Earth day at the local high school with #613 educating kids on why the Roadster was built,
and how it helped Teslas mission to accelerate the world to sustainable energy.
Another one of our customers was there with his Roadster. It is a great story and a timely solution.
Thank your for your videos. This channel it's a window of the present and future of EV support/maintenance.
Again.
We’ll thought out and delivered.
Thank you
Am I the only one that wants to buy a roadster now?
Interestingly TESLA was proud to anounce that the 4680 cell will last longer than the car itself and be able to transfered to other cars maybe... If that mentality is uniform at TESLA and that it is good to have battery that last longer than car, then it seem obvious that they'll have to offer replacement for the Roadsters!
Gruber Motor, you team is awsome!
This highlights the need for modular (ie replaceable) battery packs, and backwards compatibility. I might be wrong, but the new designs still don't allow easy partial battery pack module replacement, or backwards compatibility. The Roadster has the advantage of being "collectable", but current models probably won't as much, especially if replacement incurs a cost upwards of one third or more of the car's value. So mundane models may depreciate to near $0 in 12 to 15 years...no better than an ICE vehicle.
Great news! Thank you for the video
540 k to rebuild a die? You are dealing with the wrong people.
Well, part of Tesla ownership is to live with secrecy, non-transparancy, no communication resulting in surprises. Lets hope for a nice surprise for those bricked Roadsters. They surely deserve it.
In other words, don't buy a roadster unless you're Jay Leno.
Pete gruber the EV surgeon general. If anyone can do it he can.
Lots of questions, but few answers. Very frustrating.
Awesome presentation. Amazing that even try as they might; RUclips has not ruined RUclips, due to the content creators.
Many thanks for the insightful video. A question, hope the answer isn't proprietary - what exactly makes a car "in the window" or "too late for the pack"? Referencing back to your Model S pack repair video, on that pack you clipped out a "tired" cell to save the module. Is it that not feasible on the Roadster? Say clip out the bad cell, then trickle charge the module back up to level with the other heathy modules.
My question relates to a challenge with a particular pack, whose BMS just shuts everything down once a battery fault is noticed. You can fix the pack, but the BMS stays in a "fault" condition. For this pack the BMS can be hacked/jumpstarted, which solves the issue, but if this is the case for the Roadster, Tesla may be better at preventing the BMS jump?...
We routinely clip cells in Roadsters to save bricks and sheets. Unlike the Model S and later Teslas, the Roadster does not have the stop battery drain.
Crazy how this happens….Elon, have you abandoned us?
What is that blue color? Love it!
It is called Electric Blue.
What date wsa this from? The 3.0 Roadster doesn't seem available.
Wow, 3.0 battery upgrades! Can you say which cells it’s using?
Not yet.
Not to far from now this story will repeat it self with the older Model S cars. I hope that the volume and design of the battery pack makes it easier to keep these cars on the road. What worries me is the design of the Model 3 and newer cars all the way to the upcoming structural integrated battery packs. Same story with the new Apple 12 and onward not a good idea for the owners investment or for the environment. I hope both Tesla and Apple move away from this path. As long as there are other options consumers will choose wisely in what they make a future investment into.
I was in Wien service center in March this year with my Model S. And there was a Roadster in the parking lot just beside the Service center. I asked the technician about it and he said the car is bricked and is waiting for a 3.0 battery from them.
A more common problem that we prefer. These cars will be back on the road soon.
3d print the parts.
Tesla can easy make this parts. Nissan started to produce all parts for Nissan GTR R33 and R34 V-Spec again.
Keep the dead cars, if you can Even if you can not afford to service the battery as yet. ..... given Moores Law, the battery pack will be the size of an I-Phone.... eventually.
How does the model S module compare in size to the roadster battery? How many can you fit in the same space, given a new custom enclosure?
In the video, I am standing by two large horizontal slabs with are Model S Battery Packs. There is also a scene where the black Roadster pack is visible.
6831 cells in a Roadster pack....7104 in a Model S P85 pack.
But doesn't Tesla have billions upon Billions of dollars? Why don't they just buy a new mold and make the batteries. If they "cared" about their customers to get their Roadsters repaired they would have spent the 1 mill and gotten new molds..... That is like peanuts to Tesla.
Solid video, thanks. Most of our customer service interactions with Tesla have been atrocious. It’s like I have to create a Twitter storm to get treated right, or sue.
what's in the clipboard?
My script.
that’s why he’s got the shades on, so he can read the script while hiding the fact that his eyes are looking down, lol.
The Tesla non-disclosure agreement 😜
Hmm. Thanks. Won't buy a roadster. Or any EV until the teething issues are resolved.
1 out 5 EV owners are switching back to ICE vehicles.
How many didn't already have one? You almost have to own both. Great car, but not 100% reliable and easy to fix at home
4 out of 5 aren't. How many ICE owners will buy another ICE?
@@dragosmihai3489 I will at this rate. I'll check back in 4-5 years, and perhaps in the UK 🇬🇧 the infrastructure and 2nd hand pricing and viability will be credible.
Currently most options seem to be for a 7-9k (£'s) leaf or similar, where you not only buy the vehicle, but are tied into a battery warranty at £60pm. I don't put that much in diesel with our main 55mpg SUV.
Sadly it just doesn't add up for a massive ICE demographic
My ICE vehicle is 30 years old. I just invested in all the service it will need to go another 10. Why? Because all new ICE vehicles are currently a bad investment compared to EVs and EVs will obviously overcome long term infrastructure and sustainability adaptation needs in the next 10.
I can't take a guy seriously that wears sunglasses indoors.
I don't care how cool you think you are, wearing sunglasses inside voids any swag you may have had.
Nobody cares.
I assume he has some kind of light sensitivity or eye issues. Why do you assume he’s trying to look cool? Maybe ease off there tough guy.
I’m first!
Tell your boyfriend, nobody here cares.
