Fun fact about this wonderful tune. The melody came to Yasunori Mitsuda (the composer) in a dream he had while dozing off at his desk. He ended up writing it before the game even existed.
13:50 My first time playing this game was during a particularly rough time in high school. I didn't feel like doing much except sitting in my room and playing video games. One day I decided to randomly pick this game from the list of games I had. I was instantly sucked in. It was my first JRPG, one of the first games with such a heavy emphasis on storyline and its characters and one of the first times I felt really attached to the characters in my game. Hearing this song makes me reflect on those nights, locked up in my room, running through the forests and caves, battling enemies and saving the world.
The music is one of the biggest reasons why this game is so memorable. The melodies are timeless and no doubt will be remembered long long after I'm gone.
This is one of the few tracks in SNES era gaming that isn't a loop. That's primarily because this is the end credits theme, and as the credits roll, the character check in on all the party members throughout all of history. From 65 million years in the past, to the end of time itself. One hell of a victory lap.
"Sounds like I walked into a rain forest" - Absolutely CRAZY when you said that. The theme you were listening at the time was taken from Guardia Forest. Not exactly a rain forest, but still a forest and picking that up in the music is bonkers!
"I'm seeing a setting in the sky?" You nailed it. This is the end theme, during which everyone returns to their homes/times, and the Epoch (airship) is flying by in every era.
I am amazed what the 2 composers (Yasunori Mitsuda & Nobuo Uematsu) did, during this time and how they were able to produce such a nice ending theme on the SNES sound board. They had to have been extremely creative to make something sound really good with the limitations on technology and memory available.
Possibly the most beautiful video game track ever made, and one of the best of all time The cloud imagery you're getting matches the credits scene in game where you see the team's flying time machine soaring through the sky like a shooting star visiting each time period
13:50 - Summer of 96, I was getting ready to move and had borrowed this game from a friend, so I had to rush to finish up. More than one overnighter was involved. I returned the game literally the day before I left town. It was a race against time, while playing a video game about time. Very meta.
When we had a SNES, my family didn't really do RPGs. It was all Mario, all the time. Sometime in the 2000s my sister downloaded a SNES emulator to play all the JRPGs and other games we missed. Final Fantasy 6. A Link to the Past. Chrono Trigger. I was hooked on CT. Still am. Some songs I get super nostalgic for. Some I just rock out to. I would need to think long and hard to find a track that isn't an absolute delight. I loved that you actually saw your guys on the field, not just the "4 guys in a row" static battles common amongst other JRPGs of the time. Such a good game. I know it's not exactly your cup of tea, but a let's play would be good to enrich your understanding and appreciation.
I love this song, it's so pretty. It goes so well with the main characters taking one more trip through time taking a look at where all they had been and even seeing the future they helped make.
This song is actually a remix of the game's opening theme. There's also a longer version of this song called "To Far Away Times -Goodbye to Good Friends". The name itself is a spoiler.
Many aspects of the song also show up in the opening to Chrono Cross, Scars of Time, which is a beautiful way of having Cross begin how Trigger ended (and began).
This is the song played during the ending credits to the game. It hits so hard when you play the actual game becuase you get all these feels of the game being over but its a happy but bitter sweet ending. honestly the best song from the best OST. Also one of the reasons you're probably getting a cloud / sky vibe is during the ending credits the gang is in their flying time travel machine crusing around in the skies. I'd recomend maybe doing a google seach on CT ending credits if you're more interested, seriously one of the best OST's in all of video games.
That was a beautiful thing, to watch someone hear this for the first time. I still feel that way when I hear Chrono Trigger music; if it's not the best music in gaming, then it's at least the most perfect match of sound to theme.
One of my favorite songs of all time. Between this and Dream of a Shore Near Another World, Mitsuda is who I turn to when I need some help to calm down.
My memories of Chrono Trigger. Well the first time I tried it, I only got about a half hour in and thought it was boring and quit. I came back to it some years later and got hooked. (I probably would've gotten into it the first time if I stuck around for another 15 minutes or so, but I was like 14 years old or something at the time) It was also the first time that I actually noticed distinct layers in music and was able to listen and hear each individual part as distinct entities, and one of the first times I realized the complexity of music. I think it helps that the layers are more distinct in CT music than most, with each being a single instrument for the most part.
It's the greatest RPG of all time with the third greatest OST of all time in my opinion, behind only its sequel, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night,
Ahh this song. This game. Chrono Trigger is still one of my favourite games. It was the first game I got well and truly obsessed with when I was a kid and have replayed it so many times as recently as a year or two ago. I occasionally listen to the whole soundtrack, but this particular track is a harder casual listen. It just hits... It's the ending and credit song, so while either of the two main endings are great endings, it's still an ending y'know. There are partings... The journey is done... Happy but emotional. Even though I've finished the game so many times. Your initial comment about the sky being a setting is pretty accurate! In either of the main endings -- there are multiple endings but some of them are pretty silly -- you are in the sky in some way. And time travel is central to the whole plot and game. Such a lovely song, happy to hear it here.
A lot of your guesses about setting and stuff are spot on in this one. They are up in the clouds a lot during this song, and you even mentioned the time warp screen :)
The whole soundtrack is fantastic, but this one in particular is one of my favorites. It still gives me chills to this day. One of the few songs to actually impact me deeply enough to bring me to tears the first time I heard it after beating the game, especially since I stuck around long enough for the music box promise to start playing. I've also heard some beautiful vocals with this song.
My memories of Chrono Trigger: When I first got it, I kind of had this impression that it was going to be somehow inaccessible, as well as depressing, and I found it so strange how engaged I was with the story. I mentioned it to a friend, who got it on my say-so and who I was with when he beat it for the first time. So I knew the ending (one of two "standard" endings, in addition to the many more hidden endings), more or less, before I ever beat it myself, which I did at 18 years old, at a time when I really needed an emotional boost. Both endings are wonderful, and your mental picture is pretty spot-on. If you do more Chrono Trigger songs, I'd love to hear your reaction to "Guardia Millennial Fair," which I've also been listening to a lot recently.
The motif of time was at 3:27. It was a grandfather clock pendulum. It's crazy you picked up that theme though across the songs. I never noticed it before :)
Chrono Trigger is one of the top 3 Video game influences in my life. It was a game I first played via Emulators in the summer of '99. To me it is the ultimate summer game.
I found it funny that for the time theme explanation you noted the melody at the beginning of the song but seemingly missed the literal clock ticking in the middle.
The guess of the sky is a good one. In both versions of the ending, you are in fact, flying in some form or another. The box art is by Arika Toryiama , who draws DragonBall.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but Yasunori Mitsuda is kind of a god when it comes to sound programming. Most of the games he worked on (with hardware generated sound synth anyway) have sound drivers he created himself. This is how CT has such realistic and unique instruments considering the hardware. He also created a driver/sample bank for the DS that put his game's music WELL ahead of anything else out there. There was an art to writing music for these old chips and he was damn near the best at it. (it was less music composition and more software programming, which he was a sound programmer at Squaresoft before becoming a composer. This is also why Nobuo Uematsu always works with an arranger now. He is also a god at the programming side, but isn't as strong with actual music theory/composition. Mitsuda is classically trained so he was able to transition to modern game composition easily)
There’s a video on RUclips that examines the music of Chrono Trigger and one of the defining characteristics is that the songs use… what was the phrase? Nonfunctional harmonies. Pretty cool stuff!
People severely underestimate how good the SNES sound chip was. Just go listen to the audio from literally any Capcom game from that era (but particularly the Mega Man X games) and you'll be impressed.
Hello, I'm new but after buzzing through all your reactions, I had a lot of fun. Lot of good music! If you're looking for more music I recommend the main theme from the game Dark Cloud.
Chrono trigger was a nice escape when nothing was going on. First time I played it, I got hooked on the magus theme, schala theme, and corridors of time. It was an exciting story and the sound was amazing.✌️
7:00 the sound you are hearing there is the pendulum of a grandfather clock. "Chrono Trigger" is a Latin term, it is: "Chrono" Time. "Trigger" Device, wheel, or lever so--the game would latterly be "the time machine"
Something that might be interesting, although not certain how easily it can be set up, listening to the party character themes in a compilation (each one might be too short for their own video) and see if you can figure out their personalities from that alone.
Dude seriously how did you call feeling clouds? I don't know if that should be marked to the excellence of the composition, your incredible musical ear or both, but kudos! 👏
Funny you should mention a sky, because in one of the primary variations of the end credits (which this is the song for), involves following balloons flying across the sky over the "present" era, as well as jumping briefly into scenes from each of the other eras in the game.
Dreams of the shore bordering another world: while you're in the chrono universe, listen to that one. Like for Neverending Journey, when it comes to world map music, you wont be disappointed!

This is not a loop, this plays over the denoument, where the protagonists are flying in their time machine over the landscape and being sighted as streak of light in the sky by all of their friends across time..
Chrono Trigger brings back so many happy memories, especially these end credits. I was only 5 when it came out but I didn't play it until I was 10, and it was my older brother who introduced me to it and gaming in general but especially JRPGs from the 90s. He’s actually intentionally trying to avoid Endwalker songs for the time being (to avoid spoilers due to the expansion being relatively new). It’s been out for a while now, so hopefully he’ll start doing them soon. :P
I'm surprised you didn't pick up on the literal ticking clock sound in the middle of the song, that's the most blatant example of the "time" motif you'd been noticing.

I'm not trying to be mean, but I really don't understand how/why people watch RUclips channels like this. People are certainly allowed to spend their leisure time on anything they want, regarding they aren't hurting anyone; but why on Earth would someone want to watch another person experiencing music? What can be exciting about watching somebody "react" to ANYTHING, let alone music? Are the people who find this entertaining lacking meaningful human contact in real life and need some kind of substitute? I genuinely do not understand. I'm so sorry if I have offended anyone.
Hi Brandon, I'm not sure if you're genuinely seeking an answer or if you're just letting your opinion out. But I'll tell you from experience if you're curious.
@@JessesAuditorium I was genuinely curious, but now I feel just terrible about writing such an insensitive comment. I'm going to delete my comment after a couple days to ensure you've seen my apology. I am truly sorry.
Nah it's cool lol, it wasn't offensive. I understand your point of view tbh, at first glance, "reaction" content seems kinda corny and weird until you turn off your brain for 2 seconds and look past it. I'll give you two examples of why it does well and how it resonates with people; 1. Imagine experiencing something you really enjoy or that's tied to a memory... for the first time again. Doesn't seem possible, but this is the closest way to relive those times. 2. Think of you giving a gift to someone whether it's Christmas or a bday etc. You want them to open it in front of you so you can see their *reaction* and feel validation. Of course it's for them, but there's no shame in admitting you wanted to see them acknowledge it to feel good yourself. As a longtime viewer of RUclips, the reaction stigma is definitely a wacky one cause there's a lot of phonies out there pretending just for clicks, so it makes sense it's kinda looked at dorky. (Take a look through some of my comment section and you'll see what I mean)
I will admit in front of everyone here on the internet.
I am a grown-ass man.
This song makes me tear up every time. EVERY. TIME.
Yes, same. Grown ass man with watery eyes and a big smile on my face every time I hear this song.

Nah it's cool lol, it wasn't offensive. I understand your point of view tbh, at first glance, "reaction" content seems kinda corny and weird until you turn off your brain for 2 seconds and look past it. I'll give you two examples of why it does well and how it resonates with people;
@@JessesAuditorium Amazing comment. I will give your channel a deeper look instead of just watching this one video and making ignorant comments.
I know your feeling and i am telling you why, just like you might enjoy to see your buddy first try your secret favorite food. It s ok man.
You'd best just get used to the idea that you'll be reacting to every piece in the whole game.
Squaresoft, when it used to be good... before Enix fused with them and f*ck*d up all their games
