This really means much to me...I wonder one day when I'll be old what will I think listening to it, I hope I will be just a step, a glimpse closer to the Lord
I am "old" chronologically. I have had the pleasure of singing this mass several times over the course of my adult life. It brings such pleasure and each time I hear and experience it differently. Don't know that I can promise a step closer but do believe I can promise ever more complex and sublime a listening experience as you grow and change.
This is what I use when I have listened to too many of our political leaders lying about how they are going to save us from the violence and destruction that they have created. As an atheist, it is the passion and the emotion that moves me, rather than the biblical intent, but what passion! Genius.
The strongest argument against the existence of God is the presence of evil in the world. That's where free will and the doctrine of Original Sin come in. But most people don't reason themselves into atheism, they make an act of the will, a free choice for atheism. Then again, how can there be free will if there is no God, since free will cannot be an effect of material causes, it is a spiritual faculty of the human soul, as is the intellect and the intellectual memory: three spiritual faculties in one spiritual substance, the soul, reflecting three Persons in one God, the Most Holy Trinity. I think if you read at least part of one of the gospels you may become more open to belief in God. Mark is the shortest one, and this is one of the better translations: biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+1&version=RSV. All the best to you, sir!
I am a high school music teacher, Cantor at my Latin Mass parish, and I write and perform singer-songwriter music for guitar and voice. But NOTHING gives me as much peace and joy as singing Gregorian Chant and Sacred Polyphony! Thanks be to God for this beautiful heavenly music! Soli Deo Gloria!
It's wonderful, this is the true power of human voice; when they sing they are light, harmonious adr powerful at the same time.We have a wonderful melody and a powerful dynamic. I think it's a joy for human ears, religious or not.
Gracias!!!
Palestrina devoted much of his life to religious choral composition. His works after the Council of Trent were the only ones allowed in religious celebrations, since they are considered not to divert believers from the fundamental of these acts. Their compositions are magnificent of a great catholic feeling for God, leading to a deep religious meditation. The voices are amazing.
Obviously beautiful, but please don't put ads in the middle of these breathtaking works...I'm trying to listen as I clean my house, but my TV doesn't block the ads.
They probably disliked for the fact that the piece of shit called uploader dared to add like 5 ads to a piece that is not his work, neither in writing nor in recording.
So and So brought me here. You see that a lot on these sites. For me, it was an oblique reference in The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. That random citing drove me to explore, and, well, here we be. Now nicely saddled (some would say addled) with a cup of 14 Hands while the Mrs. sleeps, in this situation I usually rock out in an Old Duffer Time Travel You Tube state, but this is a nice change of pace. This music is absolutely beautiful. Why do I find it so? Glad you asked. First and foremost, it reminds me of my youth in the family pew at St. Stanislaus Church before the Catholic Church turned its back (at least in the U.S.) on the Latin. I loved the Latin Mass, the call and response from priest to choir loft and back again; it was at once mystical and enchanting and not a little hocus pocus. I confess, I'm a recovering Catholic and would be in that continued state whether the Mass stayed predominantly Latin or not. But my memories of how that church music stirred me as a child has been awakened by this rendering. I'm happy for that. Tomorrow night: Back to the Squirrel Nut Zippers, I guess.
A top achievement of mankind. I think it truly reflects not just the genius of Palestrina but also inspiration from God. Agree with many commenters below on how extraordinary this music is. It simply transports me beyond myself and into the dream of a better place to come. So happy there are so many other lovers of this extraordinary music.
+Jeff Pruett no he was ordered to do music in a certain way because at that time Catholic Church regulated everything, in music, in visual art and you artist couldn't get work if didn't do thing according to rules,. there were very strict rules on what you could do and couldn't do. The genius of Palestrina is the fact that even restrained in such a small box, he managed to do masterpieces such this one. It's a matter of geniality, knowledge and discipline, let's give credit where credit is due.
John Hickey No that is entirely due to his genius, there is no divine intervention, just discipline, lots of hours of studying music since early childhood and a wonderfully working brain. If I was Palestrina I would be so pissed off at someone that dare to pin on god's work what it is HIS hard magnificent word.
John Hickey No I have an education, I've studied history of music at the university in ROME, you know ...Italy? Palestrina's country? My is not imagination, my is knowledge. And you where did you get the certainty that this come from god, did he tell you so personally? Get an education and then come back and we can talk about music and Palestrina.
John Hickey No just because some people believe in some god that doesn't mean that is a universal truth. So have the humility to say that that is your personal opinion. My knowledge on Palestrina comes from the account of his life, on facts really happened , yours is speculation based of your personal believes. So if you don't mind, don't preach here this is a music page not a church. Thank you. Have a great life.
+Patricia7561 If you were Palestrina you would be very thankful to God. He was very religious and friends with St. Philip Neri. Yes, he was friends with a Saint.
Glorious perfection! My spirit soars as listen to the awe inspiring music of the Traditional Latin Mass, composed by Masters to reflect the majesty of our God.
The kyrie is to me the most beautiful piece of choral music ever written . I sometimes listen to it while gazing at a crucifix and the eyes start watering
How did humanity produce something this beautiful. Hard to fathom that amongst witch burnings, drawing and quartering, wars, disease, and tyranny, there was room for the flowers of creative beauty to bloom. It brings me great hope.
Yes it's a good question. One possible answer is that for about 1200 years the western branch of Christendom was able to 'float above' the political divides and maintain a tension within itself between 'maximal and minimal' tendencies, and express the Neoplatonic philosophy it was fused with, that saw beauty as one of the 'three transcendentals' (the good, the true and beautiful) and thus that art, music and architecture could be seen as a route to the divine. That reached a peak in the Renaissance for about 150 years in music (1450-1600), then a greater mixing of the 'sacred and the profane' produced the 'Baroque revolution', that saw this kind of music branded 'stile antico' :)
Not quite. In fact, when I was first dipping my toes into the Renaissance polyphony mess, he seemed to be the go-to guy for new listeners. Of course, over time one's ear becomes more aware of the fact that much of Palestrina sounds....the same. His earlier works are more intricate and I personally love that style. The blockier, chordal Venitian style wears on me rather quickly
I think people get him confused with Palestine XD No, what's going on is he's Renaissance, not technically Classical, so he's not in the compendia of "Great Classical Composers." That said, he's common in high school, college, and community choir curricula--admittedly, I went to a high school with pre-professional music programs (and dear Lord, the sacrifices my parents made to rent a house in that school district!), but I definitely sang Palestrina's Sicut Cervus in high school choir. So yeah, Mr. P is probably not one of the 3 or so Great Classical Orchestra Dudes that Joe Average can probably name--that would be Mozart, Beethoven, and Wagner, maybe also Tchaikovsky for The Nutcracker, or Bach for the ubiquity of his music. But among serious musicians? Anyone who was in a decent choir ever, at any age where you can do four-part harmony? Especially a sacred music or Renaissance choir? The love for Palestrina smoulders like the charcoal under incense.
You mean "a historian", " and they both served the Popes of Rome." You need a grammar class. What difference does his sexuality make? Who cares? The music is amazing and yes God loves everyone. Even if they are gay.
My playlist is in continue mode and it starts playing this sublime music and my soul is at constant peace. And I said why am I feeling this much peace, then I realized these are actually a prayers from Holy Mass. What a Jem !!

I remember well how sad I felt the first time I ever attended a mass to find that that great musical heritage has been discarded for the sake of entertaining the popular culture.
Viva Cristo Rey!!!

Blessed are you, God of compassion and mercy,
to you be praise and glory forever.
In the darkness of our sin,
your light breaks forth like the dawn
and your healing springs up for deliverance.
As we rejoice in the gift of your saving help,
sustain us with your bountiful Spirit
and open our lips to sing your praise.
Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God forever.
The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.
As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and forever.
Amen.

This really means much to me...I wonder one day when I'll be old what will I think listening to it, I hope I will be just a step, a glimpse closer to the Lord
You are 6 years older what do you think right now?
I am "old" chronologically. I have had the pleasure of singing this mass several times over the course of my adult life. It brings such pleasure and each time I hear and experience it differently. Don't know that I can promise a step closer but do believe I can promise ever more complex and sublime a listening experience as you grow and change.
One the most beautiful Masses of all times. Absolutely, Heaven-like... Thank you so much for posting it!
This is what I use when I have listened to too many of our political leaders lying about how they are going to save us from the violence and destruction that they have created. As an atheist, it is the passion and the emotion that moves me, rather than the biblical intent, but what passion! Genius.
Well said, Chris!
We all need a savior. Thank you for being respectful. I will pray for you.
I first heard this in college in 1965 . Still love it. It is heavenly music.
Anton: me, too (Oberlin)
In addition, I think that this composition is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written.
Don't worry about that. There's more where that came from.
@@nextlifeonearth care to clarify?
@@raphael18ify There is a lot more music from the time, which is equally beautiful.
Thank God for you!
@Harry Waddington no, there's a time and a place and the mass isn't it ;)
Me hizo llorar.
Es magnífico, no hay palabras para describir esta hermosura.

It's wonderful, this is the true power of human voice; when they sing they are light, harmonious adr powerful at the same time.We have a wonderful melody and a powerful dynamic. I think it's a joy for human ears, religious or not.
Gloria a Dios ...música para mis oídos. Gracias gracias gracias.
Gracias!!!
That IV-I at 4:36 has never been bettered. Sublime.
One of the most beautiful choral music pieces I've ever heard in my life (73 years).
Music beautiful!!
Obviously beautiful, but please don't put ads in the middle of these breathtaking works...I'm trying to listen as I clean my house, but my TV doesn't block the ads.
RUclips channels don't have much control over where the ads go.
Get Ad Block - it's free and eliminates ads on RUclips.

The book is so good
Such godly singing. I can't express the feeling I have hearing this.
Can't get any better than this...
I agree.
It is certainly up there with Palestrina's Sicut Cervus. Stunning.
That history of yours is largely mythical and the product of protestant prejudice.
@@mattrob19742008 interesting. Any good videos to help show me an alternative perspective? Im not religious btw
Heavenly, ethereal and spiritually uplifting! Thanks for posting all of the Mass's movements together!

Magnifique, Merveilleux, Merci !!!
I love pieces written by Palestrina. Simply beautiful.
This is my favourite mass of Palestrina - beautiful.
Lovely and ethereal and powerful all at the same time.
Palestrina e Thomas Luis de Victoria são excelentes compositores sacros.
Nothing compares to this. My absolute favourite mass. So sad Palestrina isn't as famous as other composers.
I think people get him confused with Palestine XD
No, what's going on is he's Renaissance, not technically Classical, so he's not in the compendia of "Great Classical Composers." That said, he's common in high school, college, and community choir curricula--admittedly, I went to a high school with pre-professional music programs (and dear Lord, the sacrifices my parents made to rent a house in that school district!), but I definitely sang Palestrina's Sicut Cervus in high school choir.
Uma PAZ ouvir essas músicas.Ao Senhor, toda honra e toda glória ! Obrigada meu Senhor!

Sublime! I love the Tallis Scholars and I love Palestrina and polyphony!
I cry when ever I listen to this masterpiece. Dunno why but it sinks deep into my being. Kyrie to me is the greatest of all.
Esta música es una sinfonía de voces humanas, grandiosa en sí misma que no necesita instrumentación complementaria.
Excelente observacion.

Wunderbar! Der ist ja ganz wunderbar der PALESTRINA !
What a piece, what a performance- i think the first one and a half minutes...- how it unfolds- is sublime.
I'm a teenager and agnostic too.. I'm proud of myself to be here while most of my generation don't know about this masterpiece and I'm happy to feel such a powerful feeling!
Hope you will gently nudge others to come this way with you. It's a joy to listen to works like this, but it is more enjoyable to share that joy with your peers...
I really love this piece from him.
Palestrina was a very gifted man. His masterpice is such spiritual. Like in heaven.
Ennyi gyönyörű hangot ! Köszönöm , hogy hallgathatom ! 🕍🕍🕍🎵🎵🎵
Wonderful! Thank you. I am so grateful to the old masters for their artistry and for the spirit of reverence and awe it engenders. I remember well how sad I felt the first time I ever attended a mass to find that that great musical heritage has been discarded for the sake of entertaining the popular culture.
Viva Cristo Rey!!!
Absolutely fantastic,beyond words!!!!
I listen to modern contemporary music just like everyone else and I wouldn’t say I think classical music is better, rather I think everything has its place and purpose but nothing makes me shiver the way choral arrangements such as this do. It’s such a completely different experience.
We don't listen to modern contemporary music.
A heavenly touching voice of our flowering soul...
Фьюш Каштанов hi
When I hear Palestrina, I believe in God once again.
It is easy to mistake beauty for truth.
Again? What / who stopped you believing? Richard Dawkins? Christopher Hitchens?
@@missasinenomine I think what he means is that it reminds him that there are beautiful, transcendant things in this broken sinful world. This kind of music quiets the soul and focuses it on the things of God. It's amazing, truly amazing. God is good!
