Agreed. Respect for the counting lol. Could help But wonder if you could weigh 100 of em using a gram scale, remove the paper, weigh the bag of jackets to give you a rough estimate. Or weigh a cup of material, count the yellow jackets in the cup and multiply by number of cups. Curious to see how close you’d get😉
As much as I love the actual removal, the educational aspects are truly what keeps me coming back. You could have done just removal videos, but we get to see the birdies and squirrelly squirrels too!!
@@HornetKingOfficialyour talk and sound effects to all your different babies are one of my favorite parts! (Also seeing your son helping, and the way he expresses himself just like his Dad, is incredibly heartwarming).
I love the way he says “squirrel”😭 so adorable. Also I could watch his animals eat the eggs for hours and hours on end lol they’re so satisfying to watch
I read a story about an entomologist who couldn't resist an opportunity to collect a nest of particularly aggressive African hornets. He donned his souped-up bee suit, grabbed a bag, climbed the tree, and bagged the nest. The hornets eventually figured out that their stings had no effect on his suit, and started aggregating on the mesh face shield, squirting venom into his eyes en masse. The entomologist was temporarily blinded and had to climb back down the tree, clutching a bagged hornets' nest for dear life. Questions for you, Hornet King: 1) Does this story sound plausible to you? 2) If so, do you think that those hornets were intelligent enough to have planned that maneuver? 3) What is the most intelligent thing you've seen a vespid (or colony of vespids) do?
This has to be one of the best ones yet and with you counting them it really shows how many can be in a nest. I would collect some more and make an acrylic table with those in the acrylic or something else that could be put in your studio
Wow! That colony had more wasps than people in my village, good job and greetings from Kressbronn Germany. I loved this video, I always enjoy watching you vacuuming the wasps and feeding your animals, counting them was a good idea. A comparison of the different species would be nice!
@@marygambrell6051 Having a larger vacuum nozzle would lessen the suction. It would also have taken longer to vacuum the same amount that I caught here.
I hate them, they are an introduced invasive species here in NZ, they destroy honey bee hives and even kill native baby birds. No pity or mercy from me.
I wish I had someone like you in my area. I live in a similar house, and wasps kept coming up into the attic via a soffit above a window; got a wasp removal 3 times(each time a different person), but they were all incredibly lazy and would not remove the nest, vacuum it up, or even check if it's wasps(they were 100% sure it was bumblebees, but they were not.) Cost me £400ish total, problem still wasn't fixed. All they did was get a telescopic pole and sprayed some powder and foam up there. Helped for 3-7 days, and then it was back to business as usual. Nest finally got removed and soffit sealed when I was getting new windows, but I spent 3 years being afraid of getting stung in my own home.
Get a big resin mold, pour resin in it, fill it with the yellow jackets, then show your clients and be like "this is about 10,000 yellow jackets, and this is what I remove from each nest on a daily basis."
I think the main problem with this is it’s hard to prevent the natural materials like insects, dried flowers, sprinkles, etc. from breaking down inside the resin
5:57 "If they were southern yellow jackets, they'd be all over me." Yep, can confirm. Mom hit a stump with the lawn mower many years back and once she bailed for the other side of the yard, they were doing their best impression of Pearl Harbor on the lawn mower and gas can. Great video! I have to admit, I’m obsessed with your videos. I had a nest just starting in my soffit outside of my sliding glass door leading to my deck this summer. I’m out there all the time with my dog, so when I started noticing the yellow jackets flying in and out I contacted my exterminator and he came out and took care of them. The nest wasn’t very old. I noticed a few bees flying in and out one afternoon, but the numbers were not near anything like in this video. Through my research of what was happening, I stumbled upon your channel. I live in north-west Virginia. Now I’m obsessed of what the nest could have become. Pretty amazing and satisfying to watch you remove these things. Keep them coming.
Thank you for educating me. Nothing goes to waste, you are very ecologically minded. This is true from your other videos. You feed the larvae to other animals. You also educate me on the proper construction of houses (such as the soffit), the difference between the yellow jacket queen and queens in other species, etc. Very informative, and done in a succinct manner.
I’m wayyy late to your channel, and I’m really enjoying seeing all these different removals. I definitely don't know a whole lot about yellow jackets, but I was just surprised to that they didn't all swarm on you and try to attack. Most all of them were just flying around seeming confused. I accidentally cut into an old stump one time that housed a colony of ground wasps and they immediately started swarming me and stinging. Luckily I made it out with just 7 or so stings, but still, I feel like if I had stuck around too long they would've completely enveloped me.

Great content, as usual. Very interesting to see the count of the colony. I think your total estimate (in the title) of 7K has got to be close. My guess: 5,219 in the vacuum + 100 left hiding in the space + 100 foragers uncaught + 750 dead adults on and around the combs fed to the chickens + 1,000 larvae and pupae = 7,169.

The ones in the bag were chilled in the fridge for 24hrs. They weren't dead, just immobile. The ones in the vac were not sprayed or anything, so they were all still very much active.

Great Video! I am curious as to why the yellow jackets in the nest in the bag were all dead, while the ones in the vacuum were still alive? Maybe you could compost the frozen ones. Which brings up another question, how long can they survive being frozen?
The ones in the bag were chilled in the fridge for 24hrs. They weren't dead, just immobile. The ones in the vac were not sprayed or anything, so they were all still very much active.
Awesome video!
Thanks for taking the time to show us how it is done.
I for one very much enjoy watching and I find wasps fascinating.
How can I save my German yellow jacket nest over the winter? I have followed and protected it all summer. I learn so much from you, thank you
Unfortunately they are seasonal and you cant block the colony cycle. The queen will die naturally and the colony will dwindle. Its the cycle of their life.
@@HornetKingOfficial that makes me 😔 but if that's what they do, then I'll let them be. Thank you

Another informative video. Hornet King is the best!! My husband and I watch all your videos and we learn so much from you. Your persistence in counting those is admirable.. We enjoy videos involving Hornet Queen too.. 😉

Lol, love the way you talk to your birds.
my favorite part of this video is you talking to the yard birds, i don't know what it is you say to them, but it makes my day every time you say it
The two going at the piece you held up reminded me of battle ship😅
please keep posting videos. the most satisfactory moment is when you remove the whole nest as one piece.
Thank you for the encouragement, brother!
About time. I love to watch you work. As I’m retired.

Thanks, Brandon!
Your videos have inspired me to keep a (small) pet hornet nest. Got lots of neat pictures of new adults emerging, and me handling them. They're such interesting insects!
