My father was in Border Roads Organisation. We used to live there in 2004-05. That time Ladakh was a very remote place, there was no internet, no cable, less electricity. There was no fear of thefts, crime and all of that. You could only see a few foreign tourists only riding on bullets and mostly on bicycles. When we visited Pangong back then it was so remote. Only Army was there no tourists. We could only see 1 or 2 cars along the way. Its hard to see how we humans are destroying it. Nature will punish us someday. I am a sikkimese and I can see all of this happening in sikkim and felt bad for ladhak. Tourist destinations in hamalayas like sikkim ladhak and many others are being threatened by the un civilized practices of our domestic tourists who just don't give a damn about the damage caused by them to the nature and it's natural beauty. Awareness programs and initiatives are not going to help instead The sate govt. and the tourism department should make strict rules and impose heavy fines on whoever breaks them. This is the only way to save our mother nature.
Key takeaways - be a responsible tourist, stop using plastic, conserve water, ban diesel vehicles and go electric.. and I totally and completely agree!
Completely agree...not going there is not a final solution but taking adequate measures to control is something required. Just like Andaman where plastic is banned and the place is happily surviving on this thing
The term "be responsible" is missing from the average Indian's DNA programming. So, that's something that just doesn't ring a bell with anyone, and especially tourists.
Thanks to you i won't go to Ladhak. I haven't been yet and i won't go in future. Saving environment is rather important than posting pictures on Instagram❤✌
I don't think you shouldn't go to ladakh u should embrace the nature and beauty of it but have to take certain precaution and self awareness and also should aware ur near ones and dear ones what's the right way to protect the environment. It's also provide livelihood to local people's because they is lack of employment options due to geophysical challenges.

I belong to himachal pradesh and my father is serving in Indo-tibetan border police for about 35 years now, most of my life i have spent in Indo-tibetan area and have spent 3 years in ladakh. During 2007-2010 and boy did I get lucky. It just went downhill after. As a pahadi and a guy who's lived like gypsies for most of my 22 years of existence, let me just break it to everyone. There's a sense of dislike among the pahadi people for people from plains. Not because of anything other than ignorance and disrespect towards environment, pahadi culture and heritage. People don't know anything about any of this hill states. And when they get informed, they ridicule us, they pass racial slurs, mock the accents and what not. Last decade has been disastrous, all the major tourist attractions except a few in himachal have been on the verge of destruction. I have been letting people know about the pahadi culture but have not seen some significant growth. I hope everyone realises this mutual understanding and respect for different culture. The himalayan belt of India has amazing destinations but we need to preserve them.
I saw people peeing near the Ghoom station in Darjeeling..its so appalling that I had to say something. I mean does people not aware enough nowadays not to do such things in the open!!! ignorance is really a bliss for some. The Darjeelimg I visit3d as a kid is gone..the natural beauty is nowhere and I feel we are the reason for this. it disheartened me so nuch this time around.
Sahil Sharma I did visit Manali and have had the most wonderful experience with the local people. But I must point out that like goa, where I come from, there are vested interest. Money is the only deciding factor. People from the plains and cities are ignorant and actually threatened by your simplicity and spiritual nature. This all comes naturally. But for them it is a struggle. You have the best. Keep it n stay blessed. May god bless you and you people.
Agreed. Peoples from metros come here only during weekends to have fun but not for the fulfilment of their inner soul desire in the lap of nature. Here, they want all type of luxuries within 2-3 days. They come in SUVs.People driving Mercedez also pee by side the road. But in the case of foreigners, they have plenty of time to enjoy nature and don't ask for luxuries. Metro people must realize as for what purpose they are visiting hill state? And once they realized, they must stop over on highways use tilots of hotel, restuarnts .They must also respect the region's cultural tradition as well as fragile ecosystem and do like as the locals do.
I care about hills n people of hills.. I do what ever I can to preserve the rich phadi culture n it’s people.. i m from plains of Punjab .. never ever visited any hill n mountain till now but always feel connected to them n their people...🦋🦋🦋
Excellent video, very well researched and eye opening. Complete ban of single use plastics is critical. we definitely need to start working on sustainable solutions.
Thanks to all you guys for letting the ground reality of ladakh come in the light of huge chunk of people. It is more important to pay heed to the rising damage to the environment which in turn will bring substantial amount of prosperity in the lives of generations to come.
I'm from Manali and can totally relate to the pain and frustration to see your beloved quaint little town transform into a bustling tourist destination. Sadly it's not just the tourist's who are to be blamed although we all know how irresponsible most of them are but equally the locals need to share part of the blame, because most are too short sighted and are too busy making money and forget to see the lasting damage being done to the very source of their livelihood and existence. Realistically you cant expect tourists to care it is upto us locals to push for better and more stringent regulations and looking for more effective and innovative solutions to mountain problems or else our experiences will slowly become just a story to tell next generations.
I am from Shimla and some of my family and friends are in tourism, they take people to trek in kinnaur and rampur region. The thing is they don't have any option other than making bucks, governments since creation of himachal have focused on the lower regions and left us astray. There is no proper infrastructure for tourism, no proper roads, I know this can't be regarded as excuse for ignorance on locals part but recent changes have been tremendous in Shimla district. Locals are much informed now, but we can't really let tourists let away with their ignorance, they never clean up after camping in tents, they throw plastics everywhere in the roads, in the treks, in scared places. They have no regard for pahadi culture and heritage but they don't hold back while littering. There need to be mutual respect from both sides.
I agree completely with you but I'm just saying 'realistically' its not possible to change their mindset overnight, their habits have been engrained over generations and the problem is mainly the numbers itself, most towns are just not designed to support so many people and consequently the pressure on water, power, waste management and the environmental degradation. So i dont see any other solution and even limiting the number of tourists seems like a far fetched idea right now.
If Nagaland and Manipur can have Tourist Police then why can't other states? Moreover, Locals must volunteer to enforce Do's and Don'ts just like in many place of NE.
I visited Ladakh in 2011 and while visiting Pangong lake, I noticed a 9-10 years kid who had disposed chips packet in the water and my surprise, his parents didn't say anything and finally, I had to scold him and his parents and told him to clean it up by himself and told the importance of preserving the nature...
A country like ours ,with such a population boom ,some of these places should remain secluded away from ignorant tourists. And stringent rules need to be applied for tourists and localites . With a grim environmental scenario,it feels highly essential to educate the current lot to respect and manage the resources available judiciously.
Great job, guys!!! I will share it. It’s very important that people watch this video not just for Ladakh, it’s for all the world too. Tourism are destroying the world because nobody realize what they doing when they travel. My best wishes for Ladakh, that fantastic land, and for your projects. Julley!!! 🙏

Plastic bottles can be replaced with metal bottles having reffiling units in ladakh ppl need to pay minimum cost to copper or aluminium bottles by state government, and while returning they can resubmit. And for plastic kurkure,chips... paperbags should be made
It is a lifestyle change we should follow in our daily life. Plastic bottles and wrappers are a menace in mountains as well as cities. I have stopped eating processed food which come in plastic covers for one year now. Helped loose weight as well as I am happy that I am not causing harm to earth atleast in small way.
Ladakh needs enviro friendly tourist, ignorant tourist can lead to extention of ladakh. Nicely work guys, excentlly put together facts.👍 Now i know how to be a responsible tourist and preserve this natural beauty for our childrens.
I have seen 100s of travel videos and documentaries on Leh/Ladakh, I would say this is the most AMAZING & EYEOPENING one. Unregulated and irresponsible tourism is been ruining all the paradises all over the world.
I visited Ladakh in 1987 and 1988 and returned in 2007 and then 2012. In 1987 I was stuck in Leh for 5 weeks waiting for a space on one of the two flights a week from Delhi which were booked weeks in advance. The massive increase in the number of flights to Leh has to be one of the biggest reasons for increasing tourism. It is only an hour away from Delhi and therefore cannot in anyway be considered remote/isolated/cut off - all the words used to describe Ladakh. It is not remote at all. In 1987 it took about 10 days from the UK to get to Leh - a flight from the UK, a two day bus journey to Kashmir and then a long wait for a connecting bus to Leh which was another two days away. In 2007 when I returned to Ladakh it took me three days to get from London to Padum in Zanskar. The world has shrunk as a result of cheap travel and people with more disposable income. In the 1980's people were still able to see the Ladakh which must have existed for centuries - it was still present. In the modern day it exists in an entirely different form and the future for Ladakh lies in an entirely different direction. I am not sure motorbike tours and jeep safaris are the answer. Ladakh could be looking in entirely different ways to develop their economy - especially as the region is becoming more connected to the global economy through 4G interent ( when it works) Becoming a place for people to come to try and experience a spiritual silence entirely lacking in their urban daily lives is going to lead to only one thing - mass pollution and disappointment for many on the fringes of the tourist economy. This is an excellent documentary and Sonam Wangchuk's insights are spot on - he was saying this 25 years ago and here we are. It has become a reality. Ladakh is place where people project their own expectations and spiritual emptiness. It cannot provide this for people. They should not travel to Ladakh, pump diesel into the atomosphere, drink bottled water, and expect hot showers and culinary delights. However as Ladakh is marketed as some kind of shangri la it is unlikely that people will stop coming. But they might, which is why Ladakh needs to prepare a different kind of economy, become the silicon valley of india perhaps rather than the sacred valley. In the UK there is a small town near where I live called Guildford. In the past 10 years it has become the world's centre for computer games design - why not Leh? The talent and great minds of educated young ladakhis may be better utilised in other ways than allowing people to drive to a lakeside, sit on a yellow scooter and take a photo a thousand others before them have taken. It's not so much a case of shutting the doors to Ladakh tourism, more a case of looking for new opportunities for people to create and develop in Ladakh which are not focused on tourism. I will return to Ladakh one day to make new work but for now I am looking for peace and tranquility in my heart which is much closer to home.
I do agree with all the situation you mentioned. To let you know we Naropa fellows trying to create this change. I am hoping that one day we will find a sustainable solution for Ladakh. Ladakh is trying to bring all great mind together. And I am feeling proud to say that we are the first foundation batch. Wish us a good luck. We all are working on these problems that Ladakh is facing now.
Finally someone said it!!! Thanks so much for making this video! The damage we're doing to LEH is unbelievable ! First time I visited Leh, was in 2010, a month before the flash floods! After that I went back in 2013 & the city still hadn't changed much but the next time I travelled there in 2017, my heart broke... I saw all the changes brought about the city & i secretly hoped tourism would stop in this part of the country ! The boom in the tourism sector is doing more harm to this land than one can ever imagine! #aamirkhan pls do your bit to spread the word. #Responsibletourism is the need of the hour or like the real life "Phunsuk Wangdoo" says, Leh won't even survive another 20 years!!!!
Waah matlab aapne maje le lia aur humko jaane se rok rahi ho? We also deserve to enjoy. I haven't seen the lake or the valley and would definitely like to be therr with my hubby. Aapko nahi jana to mat jao, hume mat roko.

Only Army was there no tourists. We could only see 1 or 2 cars along the way. Its hard to see how we humans are destroying it. Nature will punish us someday. If not gradually, then eventually it will happen.

The best kind of content is the one that leaves you with a question.. This video is an epitome... Great job team..
Every minute of this video was worth watching. Never in my subconscious mind I had thought about how we as a tourist is destroying nature. Thank you for making this documentary and making me realise how badly we need an eco friendly travelling system.
I feel incredibly guilty every time I travel somewhere to be honest.
Why only as tourists ? Look out for your hood 1st . Atleast.
Thank you for writing i love you baby vinshika
Lol which shows your ignorance only
I had tears in my eyes.
I had seen Ice Stupa video before and wondered what a great idea it is.
Very Truly said :-
• Ice Stupas
• Solar
• Everything Electric
are few ways to minimise the damage.
I haven't been to Ladakh yet and to be honest now I am scared to go even.
If I decided to go to Ladakh someday, I will prepare myself with every possible ways how not to contribute towards the destruction.
Thank You Team scoop whoop for another Chase video.
I am an aspiring and learning filmmaker and would love to assist or volunteer in any future project with you all.
Epic!! Solid documentary and deserves the highest praise and very well planned. Creators, please submit this to Netflix, Amazon Prime to spread the word out.
Awareness programs and initiatives are not going to help instead
The sate govt. and the tourism department should make strict rules and impose heavy fines on whoever breaks them. This is the only way to save our mother nature.
Why dosent state government do something like put some fines
Same in case ot Himachal too
Key takeaways - be a responsible tourist, stop using plastic, conserve water, ban diesel vehicles and go electric.. and I totally and completely agree!
Easier said than done....
Thanks to you i won't go to Ladhak.
I haven't been yet and i won't go in future. Saving environment is rather important than posting pictures on Instagram❤✌
Same here man! For the first time I am feeling good that I haven't been to Laddakh yet

You are the man..
Don't going there is not a suitable solutions. We should develop a ecosystem of tourism with smart system and avanced solution to the challenges

Great work..!!!
Slowly sikkim turning the same..... those so called tourists pee right beside the road and make their kids pee right in the road

I did visit Manali and have had the most wonderful experience with the local people.
100 % agree with you.
True...my hometown..😎 god bless himachal
If Nagaland and Manipur can have Tourist Police then why can't other states? Moreover, Locals must volunteer to enforce Do's and Don'ts just like in many place of NE.
I visited Ladakh in 2011 and while visiting Pangong lake, I noticed a 9-10 years kid who had disposed chips packet in the water and my surprise, his parents didn't say anything and finally, I had to scold him and his parents and told him to clean it up by himself and told the importance of preserving the nature...
You're son of NE!
That's what the people from the plains do. They liter wherever they visit. You did a great job btw.
I still remember 15 years back when we used to visit the village we saw a lot of stars in the sky.... what we have done ... shame on us
I salute Scoop Whoop work for documenting the effects of tourism in this beautiful place.
A country like ours ,with such a population boom ,some of these places should remain secluded away from ignorant tourists. And stringent rules need to be applied for tourists and localites . With a grim environmental scenario,it feels highly essential to educate the current lot to respect and manage the resources available judiciously.

one of the best videos on Ladakh, incredible work.
I literally cried watching this documentary 😢
If govt is getting around 200 crore revenue from tourism then must invest something to improve the management...
Request to tourist... Please don't pollute in any manner!
I will return to Ladakh one day to make new work but for now I am looking for peace and tranquility in my heart which is much closer to home.
martin salter Totally agree with you. Thank you for your insight.

I went on some sight seeing today and saw a school on picnic there ! While the kids were playing around the teachers were having food and throwing wrappers around ! It hit me so hard by watching the plight of our future generations ! The teachers teach but doesn't follow themselves how on earth would the student behave ! This is the truth of our educational system ! People become teachers because they want jobs and not because they love teaching kids ! Every thing is connected in this cycle !
This video should be shown to every visitor who visited Ladakh or going to visit Ladakh and if half of them learned the lesson and did their part to save the environment especially for Leh Ladakh then things will change for Ladakh. I have never been to Leh Ladakh but now If I am going to visit anytime I'll keep this video in my mind and do as much as less harm to Ladakhi Environment.
