How is this better than anything I grew up watching on nat geo or the history channel. The quality of this whole documentary blows my mind.
what I really love about this series is how respectful it is of these old world civilizations, it always finds something to praise them for instead of calling them primitive or simple.
like commenting on how pretty the thatch roofs must have looked. To us they might not have looked very special but to the people living at that time it must have been. really pulls you into what it might have been like living at this age, awesome stuff.
Oh I agree alot of these civilizations were the cutting edge of thier day and we wouldn't have made it as far as we did without building on top of them we sit on the shoulders of the giants who came before.
The buildings themselves even more impressive. There is no cement. Just stone. And those stones were carved without iron tools, so...stone on stone. And in an area that sees minor earthquakes often, it's amazing that they're still standing. If you look into the corners of some bldgs at Machu Picchu, it's even more marvelous, when you see how closely they fit together

The Inca say that the structures were already built before they got there. The Inca did not have the skills or knowledge to build the megalithic structures. There are often three different styles of stonework with the higher quality was on the bottom, a lesser quality in the middle and the Incan on the top is of very poor quality compared to the other two.

You are confusing 'then' with 'than'. I think it's caused by how society tends to listen and watch videos rather than read books, that is the cause of the problem, it's a worldwide phenomena. Plus, the American accent doesn't help either, when pronouncing the word 'than', which does sound like 'then'.
This should help you get it right:
'Then', used to explain something happening next: 'He then went to the market'. 'I get home, then I put the kettle on'.
'Than', (in your case), used when making a comparison: 'It cost more than I could afford'.. The comparison is 'this is more than that'...

This is perhaps the finest history series I have ever seen. Detailed, nuanced, and carefully researched, the series has as its goal an in-depth understanding of history. The author does not approach it with a pet theory or preconceived notion that he wishes to prove, but rather from a true and clear eyed spirit of inquiry.
Fall of Civilizations is the BEST... from the Spectacular footage, to the detailed narration. Seriously, second to none.
I'm not really a person that is interested in history but something about this channel makes me stick to it and keeps me rewatching its videos.

I love Peru is probably the country in South America that attracts the most attention, in my trip through South America, I was captivated by its history, the enormous archaeological sites, the wonderful food! I would return to the country without hesitation. Love Peru from Portugal.

The Inca are a breath of fresh air from the Aztecs, imo. I could see the Inca civilization thriving in modern times. They were very inclusive and respected life big and small.
Peru is one place I would love to go back. I spent 6 weeks there. It is beautiful. So many places in the country to see . I even spent a week in the Amazon jungle. Get up to Cusco. Walk the city. I also took a bus to Lake Titicaca

The narration is world class.
The only thing that saddens me somewhat is that they started showing the presenter and making it partly about them instead of entirely about the topic. It used to be unbelievably refreshing to not have a sequence where a presenter talks about themself.

These are my favorite videos to download and watch/listen to at the cabin with no internet connection.
I'm a historian by education not trade, and I've been saying for years that these videos are better than an undergraduate course and this is my favorite (well, counting the second Inca video).
I never had any interest in south American civilizations at all before, and the original podcast led me into several years of research, this work is absolutely the best I've ever run into.

During my brief visit to Machu Picchu, the guide informed us it was built as a type of University, a place for the young to be trained in the priestly, noble study of the stars. I cannot speak to the veracity of this, but found the idea very intriguing.
I visited as well, and have never heard that theory, either (and read extensively on the pre-Columbian civs, as I taught Spanish for years)

@@mandeyoung3495 I have been blessed enough to have travelled many places. Peru was my favorite place of all. Dont want too, plan it. Majestic beauty, nice people, people still living native America ways, the food is fabulous, ruins everywhere and prices are right. Everything but machu picchu was pretty cheap. I got rooms and day tours for under $30. $80 dollars a day for a single traveler doing lots of stuff and stuffing my face..lol
Hint..flights are cheap and fast in Peru. Buses are super nice but unless your going up or down the coastal highway, they are slow in the mountains.
Huscarean park and Trujillo in the north are not as popular as places in The South but should be. The one is a mountain park. The other is a city with a very nice square and many ruins from 2 cultures right outside town.
Loved spain, Austria, Turkey and believe it or not southern Mexico. Maya mexico was super safe, lots of ruins, jungle and cloud forests, native Americans which were nice just not down by cancun. Merida, Palenque, San cristabol de la casas was a trip back in time.

I went to Peru in 2011. It is amazing. So many things to see and do . I spent 2 days at MP . I'd go back if I had the time and money . There are so many beautiful place to see in the world . We that can do it are blessed.

This is a remarkable body of work, thank you, It also brings back memories of my travels. At 1.16.32, there is a set of steps, on which I was sitting having a cigarette, my backpack between my feet. In Europe we learn at school that Egypt, Mesopotamia, China and Indus valley are cradles of civilization. No one suggests about Andes. We also think that Inca is the oldest civilization in South America.

I had a quick peek at the link and it argues sites such as Sacsayhuaman (which is built by Incas in 1400s) can only be built by Europeans in 17th century because according to the writer Incas didn't have the necessary technology or methods. I found it very insulting to this amazing civilization(whose recorded language we can't even decipher today) and I am not surprised that the article is not peer-reviewed.
@@abdulkadirerenozturk8497 By the time the Europeans conquered the South America, the Indians did not know either iron tools or wheel or potter’s wheel, did not have draft animals, did not own the technology of firing bricks, and possessed no written language. Where is the amazing civilization? The recorded language which "we can't even decipher today" represents primitive memory knots. Say, five bags of potatoes means 5 knots on a string named "potato" (say, colored in brown). What do you want to decipher here, Homer's Iliad? I am afraid that the arrived Europeans taught the Indians this simple counting method.

The only thing wrong with this channel is the interval between vids is too long. I totally understand why, but please for love of all the gods - give this man the same funding that the History Channel wastes every year on muppets.
sadly this will probably never happen. This is not flashy or dramatic enough for those channels (which is why i love this)
There is nothing wrong with this channel, can you imagine all the work done, studying, sourcing, writing, recording to present such works of art, and for free no less! Have some respect.
We need the time between podcasts to listen to them three or four times to soak in all the details. Then we get to watch the versions with video accompaniment.

The quality of this channel is up there with similar programmes on BBC radio 4

This is a great documentary. Covers the history of Peru and the Incas extremely well.
The Chachapoyas, Aka The White Cloud People - "Warriors of the Clouds", was a civilization living in the cloud forests of the Amazonas of present-day Peru. The Inca Empire conquered their civilization shortly before the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. At the time of the arrival of the conquistadors, the Chachapoyas were one of the many nations killed off by the Incas, due to their constant attacks from the Inca troops.
I used to live in Bolivia and Peru 10 years between La Paz, El Alto, Sica Sica, Puno, Sucre, and Arequipa. Thank you for making this one. I've been waiting for it! Cheers!
