- conkyjoe went deep into the vault to bring you this extremely rare, one of a kind TV jam with Mike Pinera, new member of Iron Butterfly and Ted Nugent of The Amboy Dukes. They were in Miami for a summer pop festival and stopped by the TV station for a one on one guitar only jam. These guys changed the music scene back in the day. Enjoy.

I spent about an hour backstage with Ted in '88. He's one of the nicest guys a person could ever meet.
Not any more.
Political idiot now..
@@bobbyjames4300 why because he doesn't believe in leftwing Marxists bullshit. I think you're a leftist moron piece of garbage
@@patricklogan7238 Ma'am, I've personally infuriated the demon himself, pattylogan. You're in attendance with us? Welcome aboard, Patty. There was the time that I, myself died and was banished to Hades. You may enquire; "What was the critical payback for my never-ending mocking that I leashed upon the devil?" The answer is a simple one, Satan released me from hell and returned me to this purgatory (which is our planet, Earth). What's the reason YOU'RE caged in this unforgiving entrapment?

I was fortunate to see Mike Pinera with Blues Image, (before he was in Iron Butterfly)...his guitar playing with Blues Image was scorchin' hot...I didn't even know who they were when I saw them in a club in Bakersfield CA, 1969...one of those shows where you walk away just stunned and amazed at the jaw dropping performance you just saw and heard!.... Mike Pinera was like that..waaaay under rated guitarist.....and the rest of the band..all superb musicians..and man they rocked!
I married him in 1974 and met him in 1971 during Iron Butterfly. Now I'm so sad. He has been in the hospital for 5 weeks critically Ill . Please say a prayer for him..
YES! Excellent!!!
Mike was also in a band called "Ramatam" in 1972, which had Mitch Mitchell on drums{Hendrix drummer}, Lee Dorman on bass{Iron Butterfly}, Tommy Sullivan on sax {Brooklyn Bridge} and a drop dead gorgeous red head lady lead guitarist April Lawton ... their record label was Atlantic ... check them out on Y/T ... Mike only stayed with Ramatam for the 1st lp, then split ... I saw them in 1972 in Akron, Ohio, opening a Black Sabbath concert, and Mike was awesome !
Saw Ramatam in Memphis (I think 1972 also)...we are showing our age.
Thanks
Saw Mike Panera and Cactus and Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes "Guitar Battle of the Century" at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium around '73. Saw Mike and Ted play that day, so satisfied I saw them play.
Wow ! Tear away the cobwebs. Pinera was always one of my favorite performers while growing up in Miami. I even remember seeing him at "the Experience" in N. Miami Beach when he was about 18. He was the best Hendrix cover ever. I saw him jam with Nugent and Bob Seeger one night at the Thunderbird Drive-in in Ft. Lauderdale. Those were the days ! And, how about all those great concerts at "The Image" in North Miami Beach when "Blues Image" was the house band ! Awesomeness !
Thank you Ken. Mike's In the hospital fights 4 his life
Say a prayer please
Thanks
Valerie
@@valeriemikepinera3828 So VERY SORRY to hear that, Valerie. Both of you will be in my prayers and I'll request prayers from others here in Florida and throughout the country. There is a tremendous amount of love for Mike here, may God bless you and keep you both !
Some of the concerts that we saw back then were at Pirates World. Miami Pop Festival, twice (Hendrix, Zappa etc.) Great Times and Great Music. I was fortunate to live there then.
Pinera's band was the Blues Image. Thee Image was a concert club on Sunny Isles Beach where they were one of the regular bands. ( I saw Led Zeppelin there in 1969). Blues Image was very popular in Miami. They were a Latin influenced rock-blues band well known in Miami before Santana. Listen to REality Does Not Inspire from their first album. I saw the Amboy Dukes at MIA Marine Stadium at about this time and Mike Pinera came on and jammed with them. Afterwards Ted Nugent jumped in the water.
Mike was in Iron Butterfly by the time of this video, with Rhino.
I was in a band at the time that Zeppelin played at the "IMAGE." My Rythm guitar player went without telling me. I've never forgiven him for not taking me to that concert.
Ride. Captain. Ride!
Butterfly Bleu - my favorite Pinera song.
He's such an awesome guitarist.
I’d bet a dollar this is the Riff Ted Nugent used years later on Cat Scratch Fever!
Ted was 21 there. Young Ted!!!
The riffing about a minute into the vid feels like an embryo of "Cat Scratch Fever" (same chords but different timing).
I know what you mean
Mike and Ted were actually friends. I think, probably, in their minds this was more of a jam session than any kind of battle.
I saw them on tour together one very hot evening many years ago. The gimmick was they had a glass bowl(or something glass?), and they competed at trying to shatter the bowl. It took several attempts!! Ted won. The rest of the show was good, if very sweaty.
Such real respect they had for one another!!
Good Day. When I worked for Southern Bell Telephone Company around 1974, on 81st Street on Miami Beach, Mike lived across the street (Collins Av.) from the beach. Often I would see Mike crossing the street with his mask, flippers and snorkel around noon time. This is GREAT!
There were 2 Miami POP Festivals. 1968 I believe it was. One day and 3 days. I was at both of them. Saw Zappa and Hendrix among many other Greats. Thanks for this Wonderful post. Great Times. A Long Time Ago. Kinda Bitter Sweet...
These 2 went on the road together as a battle of the guitars. I saw them in Evansville,IN on New Years Eve 1973. BTW Ted won the battle, it was awesome.
The first signed recording artists I ever met were Doug Ingle and Mike Pinera backstage after an Iron Butterfly concert. James "Jim Dandy" Mangrum invited me backstage after a concert at Brewer Field House in Columbia, MO in 1970. I was 14 years old.
Greatest concert I ever witnessed was at the Michigan Palace when the guitar battle of the century took place between the Florida Tornado, Mike Panera and Cactus vs Ted Nugent and The Amboy Dukes. Wayne Kramer was there as well but vastly underpowered. Nugent and Panera gave me the show of my lifetime. I'll never forget it!
Thanks for your nice comment
Blues Image was Mike's band. He co-wrote and sang "Ride Captain Ride". Blues Project totally different kind of band.
I grew up listening to Blues Image, along with others, but always LOVED your style and you reached me back then! My bro's., too. THANKS, man!
Today, I run a studio and love the freedom of musical expression and production. I owe ya, Brother!
Where do you find this stuff? Just great and rare footage. Love it!!!
At the time this was shot...Mike was still with Blues Image, who played each week at THEE IMAGE. rock night club in Miami.. The Amboy Dukes had played at Thee Image..along with Mike and The Blues Image...the night before. Rick Shaw, who was the top rock DJ in Miami at the time, was the host of the show...and I believe it was his idea to arrange the two guys, Mike and Ted to come to the studio to tape the jam. On the Following morning, Rick Shaw aired the footage on his Saturday morning TV show, which featured the latest rock tunes and any videos he might have of the top bands of the day...Rascals, etc... THAT was where I first saw this footage. I think it could have been better..and remember thinking it at the time...but I felt that Mike...felt some sort of ..rivalry...with Ted at the time...and I always had the feeling that there wasn't much...going over what they would do, for this. Mike was a great guitarist, and truly one of THE best blues players I'd ever seen...I'd go to see him play each week with Blues Image at ...Thee Image. Blues Image, NRBQ, and Fantasy...were the house bands each week..and a national rock act would come in, as well...It was a great place to see rock music!.. A little while later, Mike Left Blues image...and joined Iron Butterfly.. At at THAT time...Ride Captain Ride...came out...and became a big hit.. .That's Mike, singing and playing on Ride Captain Ride...But he'd already left the band for Iron Butterfly. Ted, with the Amboy Dukes...was already known..and continued with the Amboy Dukes. Years later, he went out on his own....
You have a great memory. Mike is in the hospital. Please say a prayer
i love this jam it seems so psychedelic i remember when ted would do his battle of the bands i think frank marino may have been at a couple of those
Take some LSD brother
Muito bacana,raridade este vídeo,duas feras da guitarra. E parece uma prévia do futuro pois tem.um riff que lembra Cat Scratch Dever. Tio Ted abrindo os anos 70. This guys conheciam.o caminho das pedras. Grande postagem
Agreed, I think he is very underrated. He has mastered soloing to his hard driving songs and like you said he won't miss a note (even while singing).
My kind of music! I was a Blues Project fan back in early 1967. Of course I followed the music all the way through to today.
Wow! Awesome jam! Two big Gibsons and nothing else! Amazing the room didn't implode and creat a black hole from the two huge egos! There are similarities to the playing styles, and both still sound great today.
these two were jamming on the stage and their music turned liquid and i fell back into a woman's lap. it was a god moment at some little festival in Missouri.
Nice pair up if you ask me Mike in his own right was unbelievable and still can jam with the best of them. I’ve seen Mike a handful of times and he really knows how to jam. Ted added a cool element to this cool rare get down.
Me and you are from two different worlds this is the worst guitar jam I have ever heard. After this gig Ted should have hung up the guitar and found a job ..he sucks ass.
licks that go nowhere just to twiddle his fingers making noise. that's disturbing sounding to me. Wasn't impressed.
@@ericklein5927 What is wrong with you?
Age and life experience has knocked that chip you mention off his shoulder. MP has mellowed with age and has found his nitch in the music world. He's a great guy. Go to his web site. He'll write you back.
This is great footage!!!! Doubt they really rehearsed it much. Totally organic I bet!!! Can't be compared to Green Day or any other band for that matter. Why? because every player writes a different tune!!! Be it blues, country, rock, punk, metal or any other genre it all has a different flavor cause each player has had a different life experience. Just enjoy the music.
Mike, you are awesome man! I am from a different generation but still loving it man
Mike thanks you
Man, he's young! Probably no more than 21. Ted's playing was over the effing top even back then!
I saw one of their 'guitar battles' in 1974 @ the old St. Bernard Civic Auditorium. I don't even know if it still exists after Hurrican Katrina, but saw a lot of good shows there. In 74, Pinerea was fronting his version of Cactus.
this is so cool. Two long bois jammin.
⚡️💙⚡️🎸
Love your vault dude! this is some cool old footage!! I remember seeing Ted Nuggent in the old days ~swinging from speaker to speaker what a concert:)5*****
Yes! You as well? Could NOT believe what I was watching! Towers of speakers swaying back and forth!
THOSE WERE THE DAYS!
Peace bro, and well you know,,, Traffic; Light up or Leave me alone!
i grew up in Beaumont Texas. When i was in jr. high i remember a commercial on KAYC am, the top 40 station, that Nugent and Pinera were playing at the Texas Pelican club, Vinton La. The show was billed as a battle of loud guitar ...who could break glass !! 1971ish?
Hey Mike, I drive past the Halfway Jam site on my way to work. Glad to hear you had a crowd of 30,000! Good for you guys.
Mike always was one of the best! Followed him from Blues Image onward and today.........his raw talent remains the same. We LOVE you here in sunny South Fla Come back!!! LOL Hugs to YOU and glad to see u took "those steps" to inner peace!.........Lauren
ive met both of these guys over the years. back around 70 they had poster out 1 saying he could play better with his teeth and the other could play better behind his back.
Thanks Conky for this posting...it's amazing...both so good so long ago.
Very interesting artifact, conkyjoe; thanks for posting.
There was a lower third place and date in the video. Where did I get it? From my vault of videos most of which I directed, some from other sources. Lot's more on the way......stay tuned
At around 1:30, Mike starts playing a three chord pattern that sounds similar to Ted's huge hit of several years in the future, 'Cat Scratch Fever.'
yup, sho did
Why can't you all forget the politics, and just enjoy the music? Fuck politics! these are 2 of the greatest guitarists ever! I saw them at a Battle of Bands New years Eve concert in Evansville, Indiana years ago! IT WAS FANTASTIC!!! [Nugent won that one!] This was at the time that he wore that wolf skin scalp.He started playing with the lights off, then a spot picked him up, standing on top of the double stack of Marshalls, where he then LEAPED onto the stage, never missing a lick! LOVED IT!!!
My 2 favorites of all time...thanks! What an amazing gift to have seen....
Ever hear "Blues Image' They were at their best live.saw them many times I was thrilled by Pinera.When he played at Club The Image i67thst near collins ave.
I have to say 'me too.' I've attempted to jam with non-listeners like Pinera, and really all you can do is follow. It's no fun, and Ted takes it very well. Also, considering Ted's avowed 'Alpha Male' self-concept, it's nice to see him navigate this rather noodling jam and make sense of it. Xeolite--you either don't play guitar, or can't hear what's happening here. I can't judge Pinera's musical persona--but here he's playing egotistically, and it doesn't help the composition.
I saw this live. Ted always was lost. I love Mike's playing. He has a real "meaty" sound. It's knida like a Leslie West sound.
Paul rigger... Ted Nugent is a farce.. so full of himself it's ridiculous to watch in the interviews. Can't stand this m***********.
That's why he has so many Platinum Albums, he's Lost. lol Who did you say the other guy was? lol
@@standingvertical3048 IDK what that has to do with anything, just another guy that can't hear.
Ted is in my head 🎸
From a great era of music. These were very cool days indeed.
ted was opening shows for hendrix when he was 15 years old! met him too , he was cool, mike pinera is great too, obviously you know he played with alice cooper and blues image, and others this is a serious classic!
Not accurate information about Ted.
@@larryn2682 Just did a little research , I guess ted was 19 when he opened for hendrix ?
I SAW THESE TWO HAVE A GUITAR DULE FOR ENTIRE SHOW WAY BACK IN S. BEND IND IN ABOUT 72
I've played that Black Byrdland of Ted's "Blackie" feather lite !
Love this video, same studio as the" Skipper Chuck show"
Great stuff - big fan of Mike's; one of the friendliest musician's I've met. And Ted - well he can still play guitar!
Don't know exactly when this took place but in the very early 70s there was battle of bands going around the Midwest that featured something like this...
@petricpl,
This is a very long time ago. I don't know what this clip proves either way exactly. I can tell you one thing, I saw Uncle Ted live in Indianapolis last year. Make no mistake the man can play. I have seen some great guitarist live: steve vai, eric johnson, kenny wayne shepherd, etc.. Ted can hold his own live, trust me.
He played for two hours and did not miss a note. Never heard such a wall of sound that came from those 5150's that night. Very underrated player imho.
YEAH! Ted always been da man!
.......Mike is delivering the whole time the rhythm and chordprogression to start the jam wich barely is not gonna happen. Mike is a teamplayer........Ted here, seems to be not 🌬🙏🎸🎸
......keep on rockin out there....love and greetings from Germany 🤘🎆
Check out Pinera with Iron Butterfly…they played a live set on Danish television and it’s outstanding. Pinera seemed to add a little bit of soul to the acid rock Iron Butterfly was known for. Two of my all-time favorite songs come from IB’s Metamorphosis album…Stone Believer and Easy Rider.
Hi Mike,
Just seen you @ Wolcott Fair. It was such an honor to meet you! Your still awsome after all these yrs. It was a great trip down memorie lane! Best of Luck in all that you do , Hope to see you again.
Dawn, (As in the 4 Seasons)lol..
Journey to the Center of the Mind went to #16 on the Billboard Pop Charts and Cat Scratch Fever only made it to #30.
Cameraman had no clue who was playing when.
im of that generation never seen this vid, thanks host for posting,
Musicians are not goverments poised for war, there useing art to commumitcate with each other, Its now whos best when it comes to muisic, Its enjoying the artist,
Radonjic Dragan says > Great video with 2 guitars, legends of Hard Rock music 70`s !
Great guitars > Legends > BRAVO
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How rare! Pure jamming! I can’t believe they just recorded a live jam AND added visual effects like for a final video, but OK then!
I LOVE IT! It reminds me of some of my old tapes, way back when, after learning from them. Just the joy of playing. Where did that go?
This is great! Man that Fender Birdland is a monster guitar!
Gibson Byrdland
Pinera drove that jam.
I was supposed to see this same deal in Asheville, NC a year or two after this but Nugent didn't show up.
i remember.some story about a bus broke down. in fayetteville nc a little known bar band named Kiss played instead.....maybe 5000 people stayed but a legendary band was unleashed
You know you gotta give Ted the benefit of the doubt. He only started to really get into the rock Genre in 1968. The 67' dukes were very mellow if you will, very psychedelic. So really this form of music was probably still new to Ted. I mean look at him two years after this he was increasingly more technical and creative, not to say he wasn't good earlier. Its also two different styles its like comparing apples to oranges but Im assuming your a god on guitar so these guys have nothing on you.
I saw a couple of reference s to Mike Pinera playing with Alice Cooper in the comments section. I am familiar with The Coop's history and I don't recall them playing together.Can anyone tell me when and where Mike Pinera and Alice were associated? Thanks.
Both these Legends are still alive in 2023! Unca Ted is Very Active.
I so much love it.
Sure ! I loved "Ride Captain Ride" by Blues Image ... My girlfriend back in High School had the 8 track tape of that band, containing that particular song .. music today will never approach what was happening between 1967 - 1974 .... I was very fortunate to grow up about 45 miles south of Cleveland, which enabled seeing so many great artists like Pinera ..
Ride Captain Ride is a very trippy song. It’s probably one of the eternal rock classics.
i saw pinera live in the 60's at venue called the bank in torrance s calf, he smoked then too
Excellent, conkyjoe! More vids and some Blues Image would be cool:-D
ooh man...amazing!
All hail the guitar gods
Tremendous guitar playing. I'm actually unfamiliar with Nugent's work(though I've heard his name), but both of them are very inspired in their playing on this clip. It's not often that guitar works well by itself but this is a pleasing exception. Thanks for sharing it.
Life is too short to listen to this.
Worth more than mine
That was too cool, Thanks
Laying down some groovy sounds.
Wow, that was even before Ted became a mainstream.
Comes alive when the iron butterfly guy plays a solo muffed buzz creamola fizz fuzz
Mike Pinera is a great player! Great tone and pretty much leaves Nugent in the dust!
I actually hung out with Pinera a few months back and we talked about this footage. He mentioned the Nugent hadnt ever jammed like this before and was nervous before they went on.
Explains a bit more about why he wasnt as polished as Pinera. But Pinera is an amazing guitarist and is still making some classic jams.
this is good
Ted looks so small against that awesome Gibson Birdland.
No drummer, no click tracks. Just two dude's with guitars.
Young Teddy's all growns up now. Melts my stony heart
great look forward to more
Jesus, dude, this was choice footage in terms of its rarity. These kind of jams are always kinda hinky propositions and given how lame tv directors were back in that time about how they mic'ed and mixed rock acts, it is pretty typical that Ted got the short end of the stick soundwise here.
Pinera's performance was a little more polished and focused while Ted was often just noodling, but I was still glad to see this. Definitely a product of its time.
Awesome !!! I think Ted is lying bout not using drugs in the 60's !!! LMAO...Fucked up to see Steady Teddy playing like this , Dudes !!! LOVE this stuff !!!
Wow! This brings back memories!
Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amboy Dukes opened for Hendrix back around this time !!! They say Jimi offered Ted a hit from a joint...but , Well....
i need to figure out how to play that last run ted makes just as the lights go down
I know him in person my dad is good friends with him
1:56 is that a psychedelic Jiffy pop shaker bag?
Awesome!!
Cool!
nothin gets past you blu
