    Been debating this ever since the launch, with your conclusion here in mind from the get go. I would probably enjoy using and bringing along the 14’ better. But I finally ordered the 16” the other day anyways. The motivation being I very rarely use external displays, and I mostly use it stationary. I often end up putting it in awkward places far away from me, and having a bigger screen would probably be more useful then. I also found a wow factor in front of the 16” screen (in the store) when using final cut, motion, Logic Pro and other complex software, compared to the smaller screen. The 16” felt very immersive. And also when age is catching up with my eyes, I sometimes go with a tad larger screen rendering (lower resolution) and on a bigger screen, I will still have plenty of screen real estate. I will still be longing for that -500kg in my backpack though. I will surely feel it. Let’s hope I’ll enjoy the 16” in the years to come.

      I purchased the 14 and 16 and kept the 16. Yes the 14 is more portable and easier to type on when on your lap, but when it comes to video editing, the 16 inch for £100 more is a no brainier. I feel I have to have an external monitor when editing where as with the 16 I can get away with using just the screen.

    • @richchrono7693
      @richchrono7693 2 года назад +2

      I'm sure you will. There's no such thing as a screen that is too big. Even when I was in military and could see an M16 bullet hole in a little round Target at 50 yards( it's a 22 caliber) I always arranged for at least one very large monitor connected to my laptop. And the last most recent monster system that I built here had 4 22in monitors portrait orientation and a desktop that is 3160 pixels wide. In addition to a shitload of Photoshop stuff, that system did a lot of rendering of Vegas Pro projects. I can't imagine trying to edit a decent-sized video or movie using only a 14 or 16 inch monitor on a laptop. Back in 2007 when I built it, the six hard drives that I split into two RAID fives, almost melted the SLI bridge between the two G-Force cards that drove those monitors. And back then, one monitor was not an option because no one made those nice really wide curved monitors they got now. Having seen these up close I'm confident I could be comfortable editing videos with just one of those monitors. Not that I would have only one of course. LOL
      I found a 34-in curved 4k monitor from I think was buydig a couple months ago on sale for like $389, which is a necessity with this 13-inch M1 air. Lucky for me, something about the buydig checkout process didn't like me or any of the credit cards that I used, so I never purchased it. And this video here just convinced me to return my 13 in piece of shit. I'm sick and tired of suffering daily with supposedly a state-of-the-art laptop that is by far slowest system that I've ever used. And when you consider that I've been programming PC since 1979, that's saying a lot. It's so slow with that tiny screen, when I get tired I start poking at the screening like it's the Android phone or something. And the system it replaced was a 15 inch Dell with a touchscreen. Anyway, I'm sure that's 16 inch is beautiful. But it doesn't matter how beautiful it is, if you're editing a lot of video, trust me. Treat yourself to a large curved wide monitor. It may sound like a Splurge or a luxury, but once you used it for a little while, I promise you will never go back to a single screen.
      Cheers

      The change in weight between the previous 16” or even 15” is inconsequential, and makes no logical sense at all, because if weight counted in under 16 ounces is THAT important, go with a MacBook Air, and find yourself needing the weight again via dongles! 🤣🤣🤣

    My 16" just came today and I am PUMPED! Been using it for a few hours now moving stuff around my 2 other machines, and so far have absolutely zero regrets getting the bigger machine. I've had 2-straight 13" MBPs and jumping back to this size is a breath of fresh air. I use it mostly at home, and at most move it between my office and basement. I do have another 27" 4K monitor to hook up to if I need to (which I usually do for work), but truly believe I'll get a lot more done on the creative side having this newfound flexibility. Unintuitive perhaps, but I just couldn't video edit effectively on the 13" MBP. I believe the 14" M1 wouldn't have made a significant enough difference in the user experience where this feels like a truly significant step up. Yeah it's bulky, but you're not literally walking around with it. It's an insane machine and the screen alone (plus battery life) easily make it worth the upgrade. Cheers!

      The fan is not loud on the 14 inch at all and rarely comes on; even under heavy task - this is especially true if you're using native apple apps.
      The speaker is a bit louder on the 16 inch. But I have an excellent sound system that better than any laptop.
      Most people don't know that they can change their display scale and use apps like rectangle to make multi-tasking a breeze; even on the 14inch.
      For longer sessions I connect to my 32in monitor. Long sessions on any laptop hurts my neck. A good monitor for your work station is objective superior in almost every way (at least for me it is... lol).
      The 16 inch is one of the heavier laptops around. It's not very portability friendly, in a thinner is better design Era (both MacBook pros are too damn thicc- never through I'd say that).
      I feel like the people who will love their 16inch the most are people who leave their laptops on the desk- at work, then home.
      With all that being said, I was tempted to get it for the screen alone. I knew I personally didn't need the power boost but the screen was so pretty!

    I didn't wait for the 14 inch m1, I felt for me the balance of weight, size and portability is the most important. For office tasks the 13inch m1 pro has been the perfect laptop and more. Unless I am editing 4k footages every weekend I don't feel the need to opt additional cash for the 14inch. Ports is something I do miss but this isn't a feature I need on a daily basis. And yes, I love touch bar.

    I chose the 14 because when I was using the xps15, it felt way too awkward to carry anywhere for long periods of time and I fatigue within 10 minutes on my lap, on the couch/bed whereas the 14 inch didnt even make me fatigue once. The 14 is such a rare form factor because i can literally take it anywhere more easily and feels more of a laptop than the 16 since you don't mind having it on your lap all the time. Such a huge win for me and I thought i was going to regret. Now the more that I think about it, I would have never be able to use the 16 inch the way Im using the 14. Portable asf!

    After owning the 2019 16” for nearly 2 years, I’ve found the size to be a bit too large and heavy to haul around easily. With this in mind, I went with the 14” M1 Max despite all the performance degrades due to the smaller form factor, i still think that model configuration works better for my needs

    The 16 inch was the choice for me. The size really helps for all of the things that I do that are text based. I wouldn't mind a hit to performance at all as I even went with the mid tier 16 inch but being able to fit all my chats, browser, notes, terminal, etc on the screen and see most of it comfortably is super nice. This is just kind of an all around machine for me. I can do creative things or I can watch a video and take notes for class.

    • @MaxTechOfficial
      @MaxTechOfficial  2 года назад +18

      Like I said I totally understand it, but I wish they would give us a "High Power" mode on the 14" as well so if you don't mind more battery being used and you're not at thermal capacity you can still get full performance. They don't let you and so because of that I'm calling it "artificial" since they could have given it more power. Either way the machine is great!

    14" for me because of exactly this. I have it plugged in for 95% of the time anyway. I use an external monitor for 95% of the time. When I do bring the laptop with me, I want it to be as portable as possible. And I don't find myself working while on the road for more than a couple of hours. Even on long haul flights, I use the laptop for maybe 4 hours maximum. I sometimes bring the old 12" MacBook with me or my iPad mini just because I don't need all that massive power for what I'm doing while travelling or having meetings.

    Guts being almost identical, I would go for the 16" MBP to downsize my computing environment from a 27" iMac. The next generation iMacs might only be Pro versions so I doubt they will be less expensive than the new MBPs. My M1 MBA is very restrictive when using non-powered external drives, requiring a dock that draws more current than the MBA. I am hoping the newest MacBooks with three TB controllers won't have the "not enough power" issues with external drives so I wouldn't have to carry around docks when I travel. I'd rather not have to worry about where my data is being stored when using multiple Macs. $200 for a larger display is free to me, especially if I were to get it in Oregon (no sales tax). I don't know what Apple will be doing with the next generation MBAs but 13" is too small for my old eyes. Do I need a Pro/Max version? Not really but my only other option is a 13" laptop. Apple isn't making a larger screen original M1 laptop so my only choice for a larger Mac laptop is the Pro/Max versions.

For me, personally throughout the years I tried several screen sizes but in the end for me the real estate of the screen size especially in OLED HDR is so stunning that would be my own pick. But to each their own, you’re correct sometimes it’s not always about the specs on a sheet but also what fits your personal daily or periodic needs for a laptop. I guess form follows function also applies here too, aligned with cost per use. If you felt you will use smaller one more easily and comfortably then that’s a winner in my book. Cheers.

    I gotta agree. I have the 14" M1 Max and I absolutely love the form factor and feel of the laptop. I had also purchased an Alienware Ryzen R8 which is really great, but this laptop.. you can't help but fall in love with it. Apple did a terrific job. Also, less power doesn't bother me because as was stated here.. it's so fast, it's still beating just about every other laptop out there. Great video!

    If you've got the 2019 16" Pro then the new M1 Max is less than 1mm thicker, is smaller in width by 2mm, is only 2mm more depth, the change over the old model is insignificant, it only looks bigger because it isn't tapered and it's only 0.2kg heavier, honestly if you're complaining about the increase in weight then you have really weak ineffectual arms. Personally for design productivity work I can't work off a screen smaller than 15", and the 14" is way too small for my usability needs, I had a 14" Razer Blade and I hated the smaller screen. For me the 16.2" screen is amazing to use in such a small portable device, it's essentially like the old 17" lives again but SO much better. Each to their own, but for graphics work the 16" Pro Max is a thing of beauty.

      haha, thanks. It definitely feels a lot heavier. BTW the razer 14 was a 16x9 screen I've used one a lot and it sucks. Apples 14.2" 16x10 + the extra menu bar space makes a world of a difference.

    I was always a 13in kind of guy. I then moved up to 16 and 17in laptops for a year because of the horsepower and while I really liked the screen real estate at first I found myself gravitating back to my older and slower 13in. I tried to go the complete opposite direction with a cheap second hand 12in MacBook as a second machine and it wasn't enough for even my mobile tasks. So... we're back to the 14in. I'm so happy with it and I'm so happy there wasn't a performance hit.

    Finally, ever since MacBooks reviews started hitting RUclips the only thing people kept saying is don't buy the 14 inches cause the 16 inches is better, of course it would be, it is bigger after all, you can package more stuff in it. And yet the difference is not that big of a deal since theres nothing better in the market than that 14 inches and performance drop is barely noticeable, people liked the smaller macs and worked well for them, now they work even better, I think those youtubers are mistaken, there has been not better time to buy a small Mac

    I always enjoy hearing your in-depth reviews on Apple products and went through the same debate (with myself) about the size. The last MacBook Pro I purchased was the 2019 16” i7 with 16GB RAM and a 512GB hard drive. I have loved it ever since I bought it. In deciding I wanted a new M1 version of the MacBook, for what I do I could tell the 14” performance was going to totally meet my needs and surpass the 2019 model. After much debate, I ordered the 14” and picked it up on release day. Got it home and fell in love, but within 24 hours regretted the decision. Having been used to a 16” screen for two years I felt the 14” screen let me down. Within a couple of days took the 14” back and changed it over to the 16” M1 Pro with 16GB and 512GB hard drive. And I love it. Have had it for a couple of weeks now. Also find MacBooks take a bit of time to “settle in” but it has to be the single most impressive piece of technology I’ve ever purchased. AND … weight of the 16” has not been an issue.

    His next video would be “Why I returned my Macbook Pro 14” because 13” is more portable, and after that video, he would make one “ Why I returned my Macbook Pro 13” because Macbook Air is more portable.
    The only thing I learnt from this 12 mins video is… a 16” laptop is bigger and heavier than a 14”. Shocking!!

      I ditched my old 16 inch due to its size and weight, both. The little bit of extra weight leveraged by the extra size made it uncomfortable to carry with one hand. I love the 14 inch.

    • @neilquinn

      Can we answer both? I'd personally like something like a 15" and would even be willing to give up a tiny bit of battery life. The 100 watt-hour battery is incredible, but paired with M1 and the promotion screen it's a bit overkill. 80% of it would prob be enough and might save 1/4 of a pound.

    Ordered at 14'' M1 Max back in November and I've been going back and forth about it. I've always wanted a powerhouse machine in a 14'' that I can use docked as a desktop and mobile. Coming from a 16'' i7 2019 intel, I was surprised at how large the 16'' M1 felt at the Apple store. The screen felt giant. Holding the 14 I was like, dang this machine slaps. Perfect size for working in the field, but still super powerful. Appreciate your thoughts on the matter, and excited to hear that you chose the 14 over the 16. At the end of the day, they're just tools, and everyone has a different use case.

      So the form factor is more important than the performance or the screen size?

    • @demasistudios
      @demasistudios 2 года назад

      @@StevenSiew2 The performance only differs IF you're pinning the CPU and GPU at the same time which I guaranty you won't be. I'm talking completely 100% usage. I still haven't heard my 14 max fans editing 4k 10 bit 4:2:2 with grades, graphics, post stabilization and transitions. I'm sure there are too many variables and use cases that I can't speak for everyone but I'm blown away that this much power comes this portable.

    • @MylesBelland
      @MylesBelland 2 года назад

      @@StevenSiew2 No computer will be able to check all of the specs, so for me the tradeoff's are worth it. If I need a large screen, I'll dock and plug into my two desktop monitors. And on the go, the weight savings is nice. Since I had the original unibody macbook 13'' in 2008 for university, loved a computer that size, but apple only made the 16inch with a graphics card.
      Of course this is all theoretical. Once my 14'' M1 Max delivers next week I'll be sure to test and compare to verify my hunch :)

    Yep I had issues on my online order for the 16" which apple canceled on their end. Kinda glad they did because I decided to hit up my local best buy to test out the 14" and it made me reevaluate my decision. It just felt right and I thought to myself the compromises are barely noticeable and I'm saving a whole lot of money going the base route on a highly capable machine. Literally felt right in the hands and weighs nothing compared to my old 2010 mbp that I'm replacing.

    Unbinned 14 inch m1 pro is the sweet spot. Less raw gpu power but more battery and less heat plus the same cpu performance. 32 gpu cores is nice but completely unnecessary in a portable machine.

    As to the verdict, go with the 14in if you’re on the move a lot and it is your secondary machine for example you’ve got a desktop setup at home for all the main tasks.

  • @PerzDVP
    @PerzDVP 2 года назад +4

    It was the complete opposite for me, picked the 14 to save the little bit of money and ended up returning it for the increased screen space and it was a fantastic choice, the 1lb difference makes absolutely no change for me in handling the device. The only downside is on our small school desks I cant have my coffee next to the machine anymore which is honestly probably a good thing anyways lol. Good for u for selecting whatever makes you happy but the 16 is the one for me even without any of the massive differences in battery, sound, cooling etc, the bigger size is just much more flexible and amenable to multi tasking, also everything just looks... well... bigger! :)

    One thing I’d like to see as far as battery testing is this: charge up both the 14” and 16”, then connect an iPad or iPhone (a fairly modern one that can run iOS 14) via the charging cable to the MB after draining the iPhone’s battery to 10%. Now open Xcode and build a large project (presumably, one you can deploy to the iPhone) and repeat until either the iPhone reaches 100%, or the MB’s battery drops to 10%, and time how long it takes for both the 14” and 16” MBPs. This is probably a common workflow for iOS/iPadOS devs (incl. me). Also, compare it against the M1 MacBook Air (which is what I’m using.)
