These are four of the new MacBook Pro models, a base 14 M1 Pro and a base 16, and then fully maxed out versions of both. I bought all of these with my own money to help with some important questions - and some of the answers really surprised me. I also want to talk about who does not need these laptops and then one other thing that I don’t hear mentioned in most MacBook reviews - and I have no idea why.

What's up everyone?! I hope this 1 month review of the M1 Pro and the M1 Max was helpful. Did I cover what you wanted to know? What else did you want to see or learn about?
After watching this, which chip configuration would work best for you? Or is there another option that’s better for your needs?

I decided to go with the 14” M1 Max with 32cores and 64g of ram with 2tb ssd. I spend nearly all day filming and editing. It was a lot of money, but after just 5 days the amount of time I saved in imports, renders, and the fact that I can upload multiple streams of R3D 6k files without it skipping a beat even when luts, grain etc added has allowed me to cut my production time dramatically and time = money.

Loved the comment about the value of fast render times vs. the playback/scrubbing experience of actually editing a video. I completely relate to that and think that's really on the mark. Another thing I notice few people talk about is the web browsing on these machines. I don't care how much editing you do, chances are you spend more time on the web than you do editing. Up until recently, no 16" MacBook Pro could play back an 8K RUclips video in Chrome and few people talked about that, even though Chrome is probably the most popular web browser. But my new 16" M1 Pro MacBook can actually play 8K video now. It gets about a 272 on Speedometer 2.0. Now that's valuable!

As long as your computer feels responsive for what you want to do with it, you have all the power you need. Your message in this video is spot on, surplus power is redundant and a luxury most can't afford. Those who need all of this power, as you say, will probably use these glorious machines to make money and for those people the price is of little concern.

Sagi, this was by far one of the best (perhaps the best) videos I have seen reviewing the new Macs. I especially appreciated your in-depth and cogent and coherent explanation of the notch's size relative to its important contents--e.g. the ambient light sensor used to adjust screen brightness and 'temperature'. So many other reviewers seem to focus on denigrating the notch without ever mentioning the substantial requirements the notch must satisfy. This is but one sampling of your balanced and comprehensive coverage, which I think makes you one of the most reliable reviewers.

At first I thought I wanted the 14 inch but after going into an Apple Store and holding them side by side. The 16 inch isn’t really “big”. If anything I would say the 14 inch is really small. However I wanted that portability and power. But after seeing what I’m sacrificing to get the 14 inch (less screen as well as worst battery life and thermals as well as smaller speakers) I think I’m gonna go 16 inch. I’m coming from a BEEFY Lenovo gaming laptop that’s 15 inches but thick to hold the fans inside. but when I held the 16 inch, it was significantly thinner than my Lenovo laptop. So it’s almost like that additional inch in size didn’t really matter, it still felt like a thinner, lighter, and more portable laptop despite being 16 inches. And just like you I too really only travel with a laptop in my backpack. I don’t own a sling or anything to carry my laptop around. So I think the 16 inch would be fine.

I had the previous Intel 16" (which I sold the moment the M1 dropped as I could see it was gonna plummet in value!). Anyway if you are using a backpack you won't mind the extra size for sure. I absolutely loved the extra screen real estate and huge trackpad on the Intel version (I've missed it on the M1 Air I had as an interim) and it made working when on the road so much more enjoyable (as most of the time the laptop ends up on a hotel desk or table etc rather than on the lap!). Enjoy your new purchase, mine arrives in a couple of weeks :D

    • @b2d.
      @b2d. 2 года назад

I had the same experience. I wanted more real estate and a liquid retina screen. I didn't need all the horsepower but the basic model will last me probably, well forever, I'm 76 this Sept.I wanted to replace my old 13" MacBook and also my old 21" desktop (2013). So now one unit replaces 2. I don't travel much, so it works for me. It works as a desktop and or, sitting on the patio. The "hundreds extra" pales away as time moves on, so future proof vs cheap out. Buy it nice or buy it twice, right!

I had been editing on a custom built PC as well. To tell the truth, the main reason I switched to M1 machines is to simplify my life. Instead of tweaking my current machine every year, I'll just replace my Mac every two to three years. Another important reason I switched is for the noise. My old PC was screaming at me when I edited, but the M1 is so quiet that my NAS is now bugging me by being close enough for me to hear the spinning drives. =)

I can wait I waited a whole month for 1 month reviews to make a decision and it was worth the wait I can definitely wait again. Plan on keeping it for 8 years plus or until it stop working like my 2014 MacBook Pro that stop working three months ago after owning it for 7 years it stopped working because it was lagging n freezing then decide to shut down because It was not enough space like every second. I toke me like 6hr sometimes just to edit one video seriously it was so laggy and about 2hr just to export and when I was done exporting the video n finally get to watch it and realize I made a mistake I would have to go back an edit for hrs because it laggy then export for hr.’if it wasn’t for that I would have kept it or it shutting down. And what you gain in portability when u take it outside is not comparable between the two.

How long will the late 2021 M1 last? From a security view point the life span is based on 1) how many years Apply will feel like supporting your MBP version with its latest OS update and 2) How many maintaiablity years will they feel that it's cost effective to accept your MPB version for testing; and then theirs the costs of maintaining a stock of repairability parts. Today's collateral question is how long will it take for your favorite apps to mod their S/W to change from Intel to the M-1 chip set. It is noted that in selecting the 16" 64 M1 Max the Intel GPU gets replaced by Apple's GPU.

I have been using big sized mbp such as mbp 17, mbp 15 and mbp 16 (intel) before i went to 13" mbp m1. And yeah it is too small for my usage that involves graphic designing, programming and 3d modelling. However overtime i find that 13" is actually very usable and the privilege of having such a powerful machine in a small form factor is a bonus.
Then when 14 and 16 mbp m1 pro released, i was in dilemma again. Part of me said finally the big screen mbp is back, while another part of me said i will miss the small form factor.
So I went to apple store to compare almost everything i can. From the dimension, weight, screen estate, audio etc.
For me yes 16" isnt that bigger in sized but it is noticeably heavier than the 14".
The screen estate is definitely bigger than the 14" more than I thought and is really a plus point.
The audio is louder, and more bass, but not that big difference. The 14" sounds great on its own.
After a long thought, I went for the 14" with 1tb ssd and i couldnt be happier!

Im not sure if it’s the same everywhere else but here in Scotland the MacBook Pro’s in the past were more of a status symbol where people bought them to literally just do essays on. I will have safari (6 tabs) email, messenger and maybe 10 photoshop projects open and Lightroom. Is it ok/normal for these computers to go into yellow? As like you, I really don't care about render time since It's a minor task in my life, BUT I DO WONDER ABOUT WORKFLOW as like you, but yet, I'm not sure if you said M1Pro and M1Max offers the same kind of workflow? Specifically since at last you seem to advice for the M1Max since you make money with it... So if we really only care about workflow, is the M1Pro enough are it will be a lot more laggy? Thank you. This all makes a great deal of sense. Personally, I am going to nearly max out a 14 inch, (MAX chip, 24 GB GPU, 64 GB RAM and 2 TB SSD), and I know that it might be seen as luxury purchase by some. I am about to retire. Photography and Music are two of my main "hobbies" although I am pretty serious about both. I have the resources, and I want to have one computer that will put me in the best position to meet all my needs whatever I might do over the next 4-5 years. I am persuaded that a base model with 10 cores and 32 mb ram would likely meet my current needs. But, I am also convinced that in the not to distant future I will be using more software and using much bigger files. We shall see. I just want to do what I can to minimize frustration with tech and keep the art in the forefront of my brain. I want to do what I can to get smooth trouble free operation of my software with large files.

I overbuilt the daylights out of a Windows desktop in 2016, and it still screams. 64GB of RAM was considered a luxury at the time, but it served me well during thousands of hours in Photoshop with heavily layered files. I got the 10 core M1 pro version of the 14 inch because I felt like the 16 inch just felt too big for me. every time I tried it I thought this is comically big(more opinion than anything). I got the 10 cpu Cores because I figured I’d be running 3 iOS sims, Xcode, android studio, chrome, and adobe XD at the same time ideally it would be nice if each of these had its own core. (So the 8 would have probably been fine) but It’s cutting it a bit close. But then I also often run discord, sublime text, and other misc programs. So just with the number of things I could have going all at once the 10 cores made sense. Plus it’s faster for compile times. And I have to recompile things a lot. And I got the 32 gb of unified memory because my old Mac could use up to 24 when counting swap so I wanted more than that. But I didn’t think I’d need 64. I got the extra 2 gpu cores(so 16) since it was only an extra hundred for me(apple student discount) and I figured it might help slightly when I occasionally play games. But it’s a Mac so it’s mainly a tool not a toy. That was my reasoning at least.
