Lived in hillbrow in 76 78 loved it was exceptionally clean you could walk alone at night but seems it's all changed now I left end 78 and went back to Northern Ireland. Still remember all the good times the Ambassador hotel the Irish club and lots more places to go at night loved it
Some truth here :) apparently when Hillbrow started becoming more mixed towards the end of apartheid there were new residents who weren’t always able to stay up to date with rates payments which led to a lot of negative changes coming about there... better off people (usually but not always white) left for the plushy suburbs (maybe sadly a few emigrated then too) and the area stopped being ‘socially controlled’ race-wise. The poor and less well off, the desperate even, started entering into these formerly white openly places and things changed because the community changed... I wish people looked at it like this opposed to being racists (as people often are when they look at these issues). I disagree somewhat on the government point you make... I agree that the buildings owners have responsibilities, but if the city or higher government departments had plans to fund inner city living and upkeep from the 80s when things started changing, perhaps the poorer (often Black, now newer migrants) people and better off white peoples could have all lived in sustainable, well maintained and supported inner city neighborhoods/ communities. Of the course the apartheid gov wasn’t going to offer support to keeping Hillbrow afloat and maintained when it was becoming mixed, but today what is the excuse? If there was a financial plan to help with rents and rates, with better policing, basic basic basic maintenance and services, & in creating job opportunities or supporting those who could create jobs, things could be so much different! But we sadly have a government and political class that has no experience with governing a society and country like ours with these complexities of inequality and alternative realities that different classes and groups live in. But hopefully we can all progress and things will get better :)
Thanks for uploading! Fascinating viewing (I wish it could be viewed in a 3D viewer). I've been interested in Hilbrow for years, having read about its past and reputation. I've only ever been through in a taxi.
I lived here once its difficult but interesting to see the change (good and bad) to attach a common or garden street map with your route shown would be great .. time marked to specific spots even better. the main bits of course stand out - High point , summit club ect still others are now unrecognisable to me . still a great hour during lockdown and a brave video to make. - thank you

Can’t be anymore dangerous than london gang violence stabbing for what fkin territory Hillbrow may have been dangerous for white people but now it looms calmer and full off people living their everyday lives
Used to party there back in the day. Used to be a a lot of night clubs there and not forgetting the best place for whole chickens on a spit the famous Fontana :)

I see everyone's comment but nobody seem to realise that there are 1st World countries who look like this and even worse. Hillbrow itself is so diverse in culture and race you'd be surprised. There are still a few white people living in beyween the zulus, pedis, greater Africa (Ghana, Cameroon, Zim, Nigeria, Congo, Eritrea, Tanzania, Angola) coloureds, indians. Poverty has a way of demonizing a place and it's people. You'd be surprised on the hard working, honest, God fearing and loyal people you'd meet. Ten to 1 if you've ever bedn to Jozi, you met them as your waiter, gardener, maid, nurse, call centre, restaurant staff, taxi driver and minors to name but a few. Let's unite in love and acknowledge the injustice that occurred in SA leading to the status quo and help to make a difference.
I'm glad I see hillbrow as a calmer clean place now than I used to see videos of dirt and very buzzing place, but I see some of street corners look shady and dirty. Looks like bachelor's hostels, so scary. Never have seen so many people in one location. But all people seem free and happy, that's the important part. This is all African nations part of jozi Jo'burg SA
There is crime in Hillbrow but not as the exaggerate it I've been walking passing Hillbrow to work from 2003 to 2019 I never experience any problems or witnessing someone being robbed but there is a lot of illegal things happening there and the over crowding the dangerous place is downtown Johannesburg.
Tbh it's statistics; personally as a white female I wouldn't do it (unnecessarily) but it is just a case of wrong place/wrong time when things happen (anywhere in the world)...
the chelsea hotel was the first place i and my family stayed when we first moved to SA from the UK in 1982..... it was ok back then, fairly safe if you were white but definitely not safe for a black person after dark......but it wasn't run down like it is now.....the shit streets and general urban decay are simply the result of the government not doing its job properly....having said that the future might be bright as many areas in many cities around the world go through good and bad patches....unfortunately for africa it seems bad patches are more prevalent and seem to last forever......cheers for the video though, it was cool seeing all the buildings i remember from better days....
@@catanaman1 in hillbrow? no chance!!! i refused to give up on hillbrow for years though...i felt confident walking there until about 98 or so.....i got mugged twice in a month and realised that no matter how confident i was or how much i wanted things to be different it had become a hot-spot for the poor and desperate...
It’s interesting how you avoid making the correlation of it being safe back then for white people at night but don’t point out it’s because black people were supposed to be out the CBD by a certain time

As stated above Michael the Hackney of your imagining in the 70 & 80s maybe has been extensively gentrified, in the last 25 years. This is an ongoing process as the council estates and poor quality buildings are demolished and replaced with better housing.
@Anuj Mohan - If you are being disparaging then you could not be more wrong as the comparison is ridiculous. However if you think Joburg looks nice then you really need to visit London one day or do virtual walks on RUclips as the difference in architecture, wealth, infrastructure, cleanliness as you would expect is stark.

As a South African living in Mpumalanga I can tell you that the place looks dirty.what the heck

wow thats interesting, Im going to have a look at that now.
People here seem to use belts.
I think its a little worse than NYC b/c of the trash and uneven missing concrete on the streets. Pls this vid showed a massive amt of street vendors
Bro give your opinion in the footage. Makes everything much more interesting. Great video.

Dirty streets of joburg that ANC fault
