  • Reggae emerged in the 1960s and in 1985 Wayne Smith's Under Mi Sleng Teng revolutionised the genre. But the riddim of this famous song didn't come from the island - it was written by a Japanese woman, Okuda Hiroko, an employee at Casio.

The roots of Jamaican Reggae actually go back further than the release of the Casio MT-40 in Japan, Jamaican Reggae evolved from Calypso music from the 50's and a style of Jamaican music known as Blue Beat from Jamaica's Dancehall era.

Reggae music DIDN'T evolve from Calypso either, it was a different style called "Mento" which is slower in tempo from Calypso. Many Jamaicans have never heard of Blue Beat. That was a English label based in England releasing "Ska" & distributing music similar to "Trojan" who was also based in England came in the late 60's - 70's. Weve missed thr whole of the 60's forgetting to mention the daddy era of them all. "ROCK STEADY" which is where the music was slowed down & Reggae really starts to come into its own with the great Clement "Coxsone" Dodd & Arthur "Duke" Reid plus many more around that time. The history is HUGE. Greensleeves, another giant based in England came about late 70's who pressed up & distributed MANY classics & World Enterprise Records Craven Pk Road NW10 who distributed more than they pressed was around & Jammys was using both in his heydays to get his production out. The history is huge & I'm glad I was there when the Record Shops & Vinyl was flourishing. Dancehall didn't arrive until 1984 & it wasn't "Sleng Teng" the Digital era started with. Research Prince Jazzbo & Paul Blake & The Bloodfire Posse both releasing Digital tracks in 1984 where as Sleng Teng came in 1985.

At this point Casio out of the niche instrument game everything they sell are sound bank beginners keyboards and professional level electric pianos I could see beringer coming out with one but I think there’s not a big enough market but Suzuki did rerelease the q chord so anything is possible

@@merkanoidpeanutbutter2391 Everyone wants to use mt 40, but the price is around 300$ without MIDI, Today for this money Casio could make new version with MIDI and more waves in OSC, whole world is a client for this. Casio could even add vaweforms from HT 6000 and provide some modulation options and some storage memory, HIT FOR SURE!
