  • Love the Squareplug SP550-S plugs? Can’t figure out how to use them for an insert cable or split-mono build? In this video I’ll show how to fit two cables into this popular pancake RA TRS plug.
    Thanks for watching!

If we lived on the same continent I’d gladly hire you to build my rig! But thanks to your content I at least get decent diy results haha

Very informative video, thanks. Do you have any thoughts on the suitability of SP650-S for the TRS end of a mono/insert cable? The specs say it's good for 5mm-5.8mm cable, which could possibly be a better fit for dual mono cables.

Great video thanks, I’d like to make a trs to mono splitter using the sp550s, mogami 2314, and two sp500’s. It’s to split my signal from the output of a Mission VM-Pro volume pedal, one cable to a tuner pedal and the other to the rest of the chain+amp.
When soldering the two 2314 cables to the sp550s (trs), do I solder both ground cables to the same ground prong, one hot tip to the ring prong, and the other hot tip to the sleeve prong? The grounds from both cables share the same trs ground prong?

Great video! Could you, in theory, connect the 2552 to the SP550-S and run that the length you need and then split it to two small pieces of the 2319 on the other end (with heatshrink covering the "Y") to two SP500 plugs? I suppose the trick would be to just keep track of the left and right and which conductors of the 2552 are connected to the tip and ring.
Example: I want to go from the stereo send and return of one of the loops of the RJM Mastermind 6x to a Strymon BigSky. TRS send out of the 6x to stereo TS into the BigSky, and then stereo TS out of the BigSky back to TRS return into the 6x again.
I hope this makes sense. This is a new concept to me, haha. Just trying to minimize the number of cables running and want to make sure this is possible. Thanks!

You can certainly do that if you wanted. Heat shrink and electrical tape would keep everything secure.

So torquing down on it and essentially squishing the cable with the jack housing is okay, it won't do any harm or cause any shorts? I was worried that over-forcing it in there would somehow screw me over lol

I don't believe so. The outer PVC jacket compresses more than you would think. Although, my preference in this situation is one of the other plugs I show at the end of the video.

Thanks for making this, am I able to use mogami 2319 also? Or is that too big to make split mono cables?

2314 is pretty tight as it is for inserts, I don't see 2319 working at all.

@@AlphatoneAudio thanks so much. Do you have a recommendation on midi plugs for a mastermind PBC 10? Trying to have a tight fit. Thanks for your help!

@@orlandoyupanqui2175 If you want straight plugs, the standard Rean-Neutrik are fine. If you want right angle, the Switchcraft 05DL5MX the best.
