you can dislike a song for whatever reason you like, as i already said several times. I am saying that the artistic merit, which includes talent, integrity, thoughtfulness, and the establishment of a specific tone or motif is what I use to evaluate music. Saying that a song is bad because it's sad completely disregards all other parts of the music. An opinion about artistic work should factor in all the things that the artist worked to communicate, hence that opinion is close-minded.
thanks. sorry for getting argumentative. you're probably talking to the wrong guy, my most played artist is Have A Nice Life, a supremely depressive band. Its not because I'm emo but i just love the emotion in the music. Sad songs don't make me feel like shit, they make me feel human and humbled. Frankly I think there is something beautiful about the dark recesses of human emotion. And my band has progressed a lot since those videos were upped. I love both happy and depressing music equally.
@paskoxbox indeed. because a song is sad you instantly dislike it? I know what's coming, "thats just your opinion" but if you only like happy music then you are missing the point of music like this. The volatility of emotions has always been influential in music, even during the classical period. Tomaso Antonio Vitali is a good example.
and mood is a reason to dislike poetry only if you feel that the artist could have done better at using the words to BETTER establish the mood. If the mood of the poem is very dark and sad but it is tastefully executed then I can appreciate the artistic integrity and thought that went into it. You can dislike it for whatever reason you want, but like i said I specifically disagree with the methodology behind judgement of an artistic work if all you're willing to consider is the lyrical topic.
the intellectual identification with or vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another is empathy. If something "evokes sadness, causing you to feel bad", it has evoked empathy in you. i don't need a dictionary. I never said i wrote the rules. I am simply voicing my disappointment in someone who would even claim to appreciate music but can't listen to 'sad' songs. I am not saying i am objectively correct, just that that notion is childish, foolish and silly.
my only criticism is that i wish she would have done one chorus in a higher octave. i know she can do it....but i guess her style isnt really to show out!!
its just what i feel i like better a song of jack jhonson than a damien rise i cant help it, so if thats stupid them im the most stupid person in the whole wide world
you just described empathy you fool. and i have my head around it just fine. People don't want to feel sad so they don't listen to sad music. It is the mentality here that i am attacking. yes, everyone has a right to their opinion, and their taste. I am blatantly attacking that opinion though. It is foolish to disregard the artistic merit of a song simply because it touches on a less than jubliant subject. it's close minded and foolish. maybe music isn't important to someone who'd say that.
it is stupid. not as stupid as racial bias of course, but who says sad music has to make you feel "bad"? what is feeling "bad" anyway? Does music that evokes your sense of empathy make you feel bad? because if so you are missing the point.

Agree with that, Jack definitely has some pretty sad songs
@paskoxbox a lot of jack johnson's songs aren't happy songs though

@paskoxbox you tend to dislike suffering charged songs?
why the hell would you say something so stupid?
its just what i feel i like better a song of jack jhonson than a damien rise i cant help it, so if thats stupid them im the most stupid person in the whole wide world

I didn't say there's something wrong with it, just that it's stupid and horribly close-minded.
