    Just a note to people, make sure you get the model that is right for you. They do a 235, 225 and a 215. The 215 is the same as the 235 but has no camera. The 225 is the same as the 235 but has a smaller screen. A bit confusing I know....

      oh and the 225 has a smaller screen AND a slightly worse camera (0.3MP on the 225 and 2MP on the 235)

      there's also the 3210 which has the 2MP camera and the screen of the 225, but also a more ergonomic and cooler design and a better keypad

    That's a nice looking phone and will definitely be picking one up. I gave up on smartphones completely two years ago which was the best thing I done. A dumbphone and a laptop at home is all you need. Nokia are paid to have that bloatware on their phones so probably something we're stuck with unfortunately.

    I refuse to become a slave to the system, be controlled and forced to use digital ID and apps to do things in life I shouldn’t have to.
    It might be vein but it’s my protest and I’m choosing to rid of a smart phone and all smart devices and getting one of these phones.

    thanks for the overview :) It's so disappointing that you cannot delete applications from this thing (or hide them away from the main menu). A dealbreaker in my opinion, I don't see why anyone would look at Facebook and stuff on a phone like this anyway, and buying games through your mobile network is so 2005 and shouldn't even be a thing anymore. The phone itself looks perfectly fine in terms of design and I like the simple OS. I just wish that it was at least 1% customizable

      There is a homebrew scene called Bananahackers who specialize in jailbreaking the Nokia Remake models. Some have been successful in getting the bloatware removed depending on model and region release. If you are handy it'll work out.

    Bravo Will! I really loved this video!
    I'm a parent from Denmark struggling with the same exact problem. My daughter of 10 years needs a phone because her XPlora watch is not functioning anymore and is keeping her from being in contact with her friends.
    I have been searching and searching the internet for a really simple dumbphone that can only text, call, take pictures, has a GPS tracker and play music - but I can’t seem to find ANY "dumbphones" suitable for what I think my child (or any children in the age of 10-16) should only have on a phone. So yes, basically all of what you are saying in this video.
    Besides the really irritating feature that you pointed out that it can't delete the preinstalled app's, do you know if the Nokia 235 4G has some form of GPS tracker system? My daughter is very happy with the fact that we can see where she is/track her XPlora watch. Both to see where she is but also to find her watch when it's gone missing, which happens quite often :)
    Do you have any experience on this topic?
    Thank's again for raising this very important topic. It really is quite amazing that there aren’t more fokus on creating non-toxic and very simple mobilephones for children. Phones that actually should be called smartphones instead of dumbphones.... because it would by far be the smartest choice for not only children but adults to :)
    // Mia, Copenhagen DK

    • @WillSchreiber
      @WillSchreiber  Месяц назад +2

      @@MiaSilberbrandt there isn’t any GPS tracking. You could just give them an AirTag? Xplora has been really inconsistent when mine wore it; fine for calls but really iffy on the GPS side of things unless it was having a good day. I also hated their app for texting as it would never just show me the message without going into it (+3 screens).
      An alternative phone to check out may be the new LightPhone. That looks to be closer to the sweet spot, and may at some point have Signal or the like on it…. For 8x the price though!

    KaiOS is honestly some of the worst garbage that's on the market right now, should be saying enough since we have Android wich is shit to begin with.
    When Nokia actually still made devices, I feel like they made the best platform for feature phones, no preinstalled garbage you don't need, no social media apps etc. Wonder what's stopping HMD for using S40

      Going well! My eleven year old has some friends that have smartphones and he has commented about how they always have their head down. After the first few weeks of novelty it has become a tool that he brings with him sometimes. He phones his friends to talk with them... he hates texting on it however. That isn't terribly surprising, but the couple of times he has expressed frustration have mostly been that it takes him a while to bash out a text when he knows it would be much faster on another device. His friends with smartphones write lots of messages, with lots of text, and he replies with shorter responses. I don't think he really minds too much as he has just fell into phoning them if he wants to talk to them. He says he loves the phone and has plastered the back of it in stickers. He has also learned about notifications and decided himself to turn off all audible and vibrating notifications as he found them distracting - especially with the text heavy friends. Over time the long messages from friends has naturally reduced and he uses it more to confirm/setup IRL things.

    Hi - I couldn't agree with you more - absolutely spot on. We are also looking for our 11 year old as an upgrade to her existing nokia flip phone which i don't think does predictive texting and is therefore quite frustrating. Why can't they do more phones with no internet and no social media. Or let you have a way of adapting a smart phone for a child - i.e. to delete all the apps etc that you don't want them to have. I do not want her doomscrolling instagram. I just need her to be able to call, text, take photos, play music. Apple are surely missing a trick - why can't they have a child setting that you could apply that would disable whatever you chose to take off . You could then adapt that as they get older. Any thoughts on how this compares to a nokia 3110?

    I don't know if Nokia is providing updates for Nokia feature phones in Europe and North America. But here in Asia OTA update through 4g installs Cloud apps such as youtube shorts, news, weather and games. Nokia/HMD is reportedly most likely shifting a large part of its global design capacity to India to save money. I think in the future most likely almost all HMD phones will come from India.

    Really helpful discussion of features and appropriateness to age groups. That also applies to people who are ignorant of various scams through SMS, whatsapp and emails, and unsure of handling threats online. Safety first, in this case. And if several apps don't function or can't be removed then what's the point in paying more for additional features. There's no newness without customisation. 🙏😊 Thanks

    • @WillSchreiber
      @WillSchreiber  3 месяца назад +2

      I had looked at doing the same thing with an iPhone with apps removed and parental controls. I decided not to go down that path for two reasons: (1) constant “but it CAN do it” type of comments coming back from neutering a device that they know is capable of far more; (2) you can see by googling how to circumvent iPhone restrictions that it takes all of a minute to see you just need a computer with some software to 100% remove any restrictions you put in place. When combined with one, it’s clear that Apple parental controls are really for very young children that more or less accept the world they are given with zero curiosity to break the rules

      Ah, there are so many things that affect battery life when in standby and in use. Some phones that have a camera built-in but never used might still say "I'll last 20-30 days in standby!", but that's usually with 2G speeds. It can sometimes depend on battery size, speeds (2G, 3G, 4G etc), operating system and lots of other things.
      I just need a phone that can last in standby for 25-30+ days, have a replaceable battery and support for both 2G and 4G. The 2G bit will be switched off around 2033-ish in the UK, so I like 4G there as a backup option.

    by far the most helpful video i've seen, we are absolutely in the same boat as you and trying to do the right thing. I'm a bit confused about data though. i know the browser is basic but it does still work right? you suggest in the description that it doesn't? i hope this is the case! But if it does, then we have no parental controls over this element? the only option i can see is to buy a no data plan from asda to avoid this issue. although i was hoping to use smarty which has free mms (but no no data plan sadly), so she can send a photo with a text as a next step once we feel she is ready. maybe i'll just swap from one sim to the other at that stage unless you have a better solution figured out? also, from what i can figure on the hmd website, this and the new iconic 3210 are the same spec so then its just a case of aesthetics - did you choose this one for a particularl reason over the 3210? I hope my comments are as helpful as your video for others. thank you, i've been down a rabbit hole!

    • @WillSchreiber
      @WillSchreiber  3 месяца назад

      In the UK the browser doesn’t appear to work anyway, but there is also a way to turn it off in the parental controls on the phone. I stumbled on that and there are just two things to limit.
      I got this right before the 3210 was refreshed, but you’re right they are identical really other than the style.
      My kid has picked up on notifications being annoying already and decided themselves to only have them on for phone calls. He does get frustrated sometimes on the time it takes to type out a message, but understands that is part of the point

It remains silent about the innovations its competitors bring to phones, He wasn't competing. It eventually sank. Samsung is doing the same careless attitude now.
