  • In June 1997 Children's BBC moved from Studio A to the newly created Studio 9. This video includes most of the links from that afternoon (which started at 4pm for some reason) including a behind-the-scenes tour and new fax number. Apologies for the harsh cuts - I wasn't that slick with a VCR back then...

This part always makes me laugh. It made the film crew crack up too from the sound of it!

1:53 That bit cracks me up !
Why ? because when Otis reads the fax, his voice got replaced with phone button sounds that do the Children's BBC theme. and we thought the Tex Avery cartoons were hilarious !
Why can't we have humor like this anymore ?

Thanks so much for uploading this to RUclips I absolutely love the continuity in-between the children's block of shows which were shown on both CBBC and CITV.

They'd normally switch the start time to 4pm or 4:10 from mid-June to the end of August to allocate for sports events, namely Wimbledon.

Thank you so much for uploading this to RUclips there was nothing I liked better as a child than arriving home from school and eating my dinner whilst flicking between CBBC and CITV. I loved watching both channels and there was nothing quite like classic programmes for kids.
I love anything to do with children's output and anything CBBC and CITV related is great to see.
It is really very interesting how Nick was playing in the programmes that you see at 05:16 05:17 it is also nice to see the Panasonic D3 broadcast master tape for 50/50 from BBC resources Scotland which had just come off the air and how this was all happening live as you saw it on telly is fascinating!

Thank you so much for uploading this to RUclips I see that the BBC used a Betacam video recorder in the old days to play out the professional broadcast digital recording video tape formats.

I remember this one. two things, They didn't really use the virtual reality chamber very much. (think that that was the most is was ever used) also this was only 4 months before the big rebranding. they must have known that when they were doing this.

I kept thinking that the tapes were played out by the BBC's transmission, playout and presentation area but obviously not there was a CBBC play-out person who played in all the children's shows.

It is very interesting how Nick was playing in the programmes that you watched at home as mentioned at 05:20 05:21 and it is very interesting how this happens live as you see it on telly.

Thanks so much for uploading this I believe that Nick was responsible for playing in all the best children's shows and cartoons that you watched at home.
The video play-out machines look very familiar to the ones in network control and for some reason or another I thought that the children's shows and cartoons were played out from network control but I believe that they were only responsible for playing in the non children's shows but for the kids programmes CBBC had somebody to play in the shows.

This was also used for the birthdays for a long time as I have a recording myself and they presented the birthdays from the same studio where they present the afternoon links.
Mind you I believe that on Monday 16th June 1997 CBBC started to broadcast all of it's broadcasts from Studio 9 including the breakfast CBBC the morning CBBC for very young children and the afternoon CBBC the lunchtime CBBC only had the ident then straight into the programme.
