  • In the vintage computing hobby, I've come across dozens of Maxtor hard drives over the years (always the Diamond series)---I've seen two that were still working without issues, the rest were dead or dying

I had a Maxtor from a Dell Dimension 2100 fail some time ago. I think it was a 20GB model. It started making a clicking noise during a install of Windows 2000 and died.

Yeah, but I wonder how many bad sectors it has? I have another Maxtor that's working, but has 16 bad sectors----it won't be working for long lol

i have 2 seagates from the 90's that are barely hanging in there. one is inaccessible and the other used to boot windows 98 but now it just loads infinitely while looping. other partition works tho, it has some old games and a ton of music

Yep, they all fail over time. I've got a couple of old Seagates that I'll cover in upcoming videos

Made in 2003? I'm surprised it made it 10 years let alone 21years. Hope you transferred anything you need on it to a SSD.

Oh, it wasn't mine; I bought a lot of used hard drives on ebay. It's hard to say how much they were used

@@justsumguy2uIf you connect it as an external drive, can you check its S.M.A.R.T. report?

@@albert_gyorgy I'm not sure what you mean; how do I connect it as an external drive? One thing I do know; S.M.A.R.T is completely useless. I've seen so many drives over the years where the drive failed, and S.M.A.R.T never said a peep

@@justsumguy2u What I meant is install it alongside a boot drive. S.M.A.R.T. may not always be accurate, but I feel like it could be interesting to take a look at.

@@albert_gyorgy Do IDE drives support SMART? I thought SMART came along with SATA.

And that completey misses the point of retro computing---the goal is to have it as original as possible
