EDIT; I re-tested the first drive after I had tested all 4, so ignore the comments about the first drive being defective

Yet another from the lot of supposedly "bad" hard drives I bought. I've read a lot of negative comments about Fireball hard drives, stating that they were unreliable; that has not been my experience

Don't get me wrong; with 16 bad clusters found, even if this hard drive is still working, it won't be for long

I fixed a drive that didn’t spin by cutting of a resistor that was shorting an wasn’t a 0 ohm
windows hp operating system
i don't know why but youtube thought i should see this apparently
Well, nobody made you click on it.....
I have one laying around Still works (weirdly enough out of a wd external hddd enclosure)
Yeah, but I wonder how many bad sectors it has? I have another Maxtor that's working, but has 16 bad sectors----it won't be working for long lol
We had a couple decent thunderstorms the past couple days here in El Paso TX.
Texas gets some really good thunderstorms due to the heat and humidity
@@justsumguy2u yeah. El Paso is really dry, but these thunderstorms are making it a bit more humid than normal.
Don''t get me started on CR2032 batteries again. I have around eight old desktops, and the only one that still has a working CMOS battery is a Dell Dimension 2100 with a Intel Celeron in it.
This time around I went with a 10 pack, instead of my usual of just buying 1 or 2
@@justsumguy2u I'm probably going to do that.
That’s seagate quality for ya
I like Seagate, I've had good luck with them. But alas, all hard drives fail over time, no matter who makes them
@@justsumguy2u that’s true. Xbox uses seagate, and I’ve just had multiple drives fail. Compared to Western Digital, I’ve yet to see one die. I have one from 1985 that is only starting to fail. In my experience, WD are the most reliable drives I’ve used.
Thanks YT Algorithm for recommending me this at 4:15 AM EST
Well in all fairness, you didn't have to click on it....
It's broken , it's hard to look at
Yeah, but it was still broken with the cover on. It had it's last head crash
@@justsumguy2u this comment was actually a FNAF/anime reference , and ahh yeah I really appreciate hard drives even if they are slower than ssds , they can still be very useful storage needs , and I am Soo sad that they go bad a lot and that companies usually shred what are perfectly reusable HDD just because they don't want anyone to data recovery what is on it , like I could use those guys , I wouldn't take your stupid data about patients or how badly you treat your employees, storage is storage!!!(Sorry man)
@@yassinashraf1235 I agree that they don't have to destroy those drives---they could do a DOD (department of defense) wipe on them, and they could be reused with all previous data gone. There are a few programs that can do that, and they're not hard to get
Beep beep!
How did i end up here
You made a wrong turn at the last light

thats a shiny ass drive
I got some drives a few days ago, and they arrived in pretty bad packing. Scanned him with a thing like yours, but on windows 10. 4 of the drives are 2 tb, so you can guess how long that took. No bad sectors!
I'm glad to hear it!
I had a Maxtor from a Dell Dimension 2100 fail some time ago. I think it was a 20GB model. It started making a clicking noise during a install of Windows 2000 and died.
Get a new hard drive
Idk what scandisk is but thats pretty cool, it shows how redundant storage work. Its able to repair itself.
Scandisk is a program that can be used in DOS, which in turn is part of Windows 95/98. It was also part of Millenium, but it was not user-accessible. Basically, it lets you know what kind of shape your hard drive is in
@@justsumguy2u thats cool, thank you for explaining
This is why i put ssds in my older pcs
And that completey misses the point of retro computing---the goal is to have it as original as possible
i have 2 seagates from the 90's that are barely hanging in there. one is inaccessible and the other used to boot windows 98 but now it just loads infinitely while looping. other partition works tho, it has some old games and a ton of music
Yep, they all fail over time. I've got a couple of old Seagates that I'll cover in upcoming videos
i could probly fix it
hi
I've never ever witnessed that much quickly consecutive lightning flashes in the sky. Although one time a huge thunder strike must've striked really near my location, because it startled everyone in the house for its very loud sound.
It was almost like a strobe light, near constant
Made in 2003? I'm surprised it made it 10 years let alone 21years. Hope you transferred anything you need on it to a SSD.
Oh, it wasn't mine; I bought a lot of used hard drives on ebay. It's hard to say how much they were used
@@justsumguy2uIf you connect it as an external drive, can you check its S.M.A.R.T. report?
@@albert_gyorgy I'm not sure what you mean; how do I connect it as an external drive? One thing I do know; S.M.A.R.T is completely useless. I've seen so many drives over the years where the drive failed, and S.M.A.R.T never said a peep
@@justsumguy2u What I meant is install it alongside a boot drive. S.M.A.R.T. may not always be accurate, but I feel like it could be interesting to take a look at.
@@albert_gyorgy Do IDE drives support SMART? I thought SMART came along with SATA.
Plug in your Vista doorstopper, cough up a command prompt, type… VER to see what version it is. Vista reports v6.0 - Now try it on your beloved Win7 machine. Win7 reports v6.1 - the rest is marketing! 😹
Haha, I didn't know that about the version numbers....that's interesting
Now try it with Win8… v6.2 (head explodes). At least Win-10 reports v10
@@peters8758 That's odd, because 8 was an entirely new o/s from the ground up; it was not based on the Vista/7 build, and 8 actually has much more in common with 10
@@justsumguy2u Win8 is definitely a different UI but maybe some System elements like CMD and Control Panel didn’t change much. Just checked, Win2K shows v5.0 and XP shows 5.1
@@peters8758 It's more than a different UI though, it's a different build with a new kernel. But who can say what MS was thinking when they numbered those? They do wacky stuff all the time lol
Anything that you concoct that plays a 78rpm record this good deserves a hearty pat on the back.
RIP Radio Shack Heat Gun. You lived an honorable life and deserve this much earned rest. Perhaps one day in the future your fan will suddenly spring back to life and we can continue to confuse people who have never heard of Radio Shack.
I miss radio shack. Only store that did components anywhere near me.
Old stuff like this definitely outlast their intended life span. Especially in a world where certain popular and over hyped tool brands sell $200 batteries that die after a couple years
Yeah, for sure
You got your money's worth out of it. Probably that won't happen for the replacement one unless you find one exactly like it at a popular selling site. Hint hint. $16.90 plus shipping and the Ohio based seller says it was never used. Go for it.
Definitely got my money's worth, no doubt
I can recommend the browser Mypal 68 for Vista. It's based on Firefox 68 Quantum and does work much better than Firefox 52
Nothing wrong with leaving the original electrolytic in there. People get kinda carried away with the recaps.
It really is on a case-by-case basis. Visual inspection can reveal problems, and if the can gets hot in use, that's definitely a problem. This one checks out fine visually, but I'll definitely be monitoring those temps
I wish people who wanted making up test questions for a living ( think ACT,PSAT, or GRE) didn't work for some radio manufacturers instead. Even with the answer in the form of a diagram as shown they can beguile most people!
What model and year was the radio Nice work
Thank you. It's a model 1121 PGW console from 1946
This feels like witnessing the end of the world through the lenses of a Windows Vista review.
LOL, I hear ya. But the "end of the world" has been with us for quite some time, we just didn't have the internet to see it
Vista sucked windows 7 was a life saver
Windows 7 WAS Windows Vista, just improved. Same operating system, new name.
Vista walked so windows 7 could run
@@Hash-6624 In a way, yeah. By the time they got Vista running 100%, they decided to rename it 7
I have a Vista laptop. Personally I really like Vista. It feels special.
0:10 My PC looks just like that except it has a windows 7 logo sticker next to a AMD Anthlon 2 sticker running windows 10 with some tweaks to make it look like a beautiful abomination of windows 7 and windows vista
i ordered a dell XPS M1210 and i am going to put a core 2 duo T7200 slot M and put a ssd + Vista and XP.

Q: What am I looking at? An amplifier? A radio? A ridiculously over engineered electronic can opener? I seriously have no idea.
It's the radio part of a console he got, the first video about it is called 'Finally, a console'.
See, this is what happens when you jump ahead instead of going through the videos; my other videos give the context.
@@justsumguy2u I am not to blame, I didn’t jump ahead. This was the first video recommended to me by RUclips.
@@middleclassic Yep, and you didn't bother looking at the others for context. I'm not going to spell out what I'm doing in every video; my subscribers know, because they watch all of them.
@@justsumguy2u Oh man, you’re funny! And cantankerous too. May you and your followers get grumpier as the sun sets every day.
That is a common sight, the last couple of GE's that I worked on , had their share..
Oh yeah, I've seen plenty over the years. At least the tech that did this job had enough sense to take the old leg out of circuit; many techs just bridged the old section, which can be bad news
A very good choice !
Model 1121 from 1946? It may have grounding issues which would give it wanky FM reception drifting.
Thanks for the tip. I haven't had it running yet, but I'll keep that in mind. But much of the problem with non-AFC FM was tube drift and component drift in general. As the set heats up, tube parameters shift...same with resistors as they got hot
That is a very acceptable upgraded changer for they often did that to many consoles in the early 1950s.
They sure did!
Used the "wideband " FM system designed by Edwin Armstrong. Only a few models were made before the FCC allowed RCA and other radio maufacturers to use TV channel 1 to the FM band at 42 to 50 Mhz ,the old channel one. This is why TV's never had a channel 1. That was in 1940. But that frequency allocation was too small for all the stations that wanted to be on the air so by 1945 the FCC changed the band to 88-108 Mhz. If you buy an prewar console with FM you may be disappointed by all of this information but it should work out but making FM presets , I don't know if it can do that. You got a great deal on it my friend. Stromberg Carlson made excellent radios.
Zenith hedged their bets in the 40's; they had a few models that had both the prewar AND the postwar FM bands. One thing I always hated about early FM is the lack of AFC. I call these sets "drift-o-matic" because the stations really did like to drift
👍
Check the caps and the power supply output. However if the power supply is putting out dirty power, the chipsets might actually be damaged.
I covered that in part II by changing out the power supply; made no difference. This isn't something I've seen with just this pc but many old ones over the years; chipsets start to fail on their own
I had a notebook do this.
Yes, it can happen to notebooks too
It is possible you may have an intermitted short when turning the blades due to fine piece of metal or solder splash inbetween the plates. You can confirm this by taking it out of the case and in a dark room turn it on and move the dial and see if a little spark occurs somewhere. I'm sure you did the credit card trick between the plates already to flush any bugger out.
Thanks for the tip, that is useful
Maybe an alignment too?
I gave it one; the only thing that needed adjusted was the antenna trimmer on the tuning condenser. The IF alignment was already spot-on
