Welcome back everyone to The Tower Project, I hope you all enjoy this introductory video on the proper usage of Pikemen in Medieval 2 Total War. If you are wondering, demonstration of the actual strategy starts at 5:10. Thank you all again, and we look forward to continuing to impress the Total War community!
dont they work better if you put them in deep formation as opposed to a thin 2 man line? that way, even though the first rank may drop their pikes, the rows behind them can still poke.
@@midshipman8654 I dont have them 2 men deep, it is 3-4 men deep, if you put them deeper than that the men behind dont fight and the unit isnt very wide and can be outflanked.
Yes they have, and they still can be sometimes, even with this it can get pretty micro-intensive to manage multiple units and make them keep their pikes down. But at least with this there is a chance for them to generate great value.
So you have to make weird micromanaging to make them actually work how they would in real life because the devs programmed it weird. Spear wall should stop them from dropping the weapons all togethe
The main reason they drop their weapons is because the devs actually gave them a 2nd weapon with the 1 handed sword (which I think was a really good choice as it looks much better to have men pull them out once the spear wall breaks down), but for some reason they always drop them. Luckily these mechanics work so much better in their later games and dont need mods at all to fix them (sarcasm)
Thanks Wafflez, can't tell you how much I appreciate the support! If you want to send me any replays feel free to send them to the email in the "about" section of my channel.
Oh my god... I always thought pikemen were weak and disappointing in Medieval 2 compared to RTW until this video and all you had to do was backspace + right-click? I would have never figured this out!
Best video I've seen on M2TW units ever. Thanks for making it. I always cringed at the obsession many people have for feudal and chivalric knights, or any form of cavalry.
Your method is better than mine, but my method demands less micro-management. My method: use Guard Mode on both units; after the enemy charge has exhausted itself, hotkeyD (toggles Guard Mode off); the Pikes start the Glorious Sewing Machine all on their own. Your way starts The Glorious Sewing Machine earlier but, If I'm trying to manage 6-12 total units of Pikemen, I'd rather have them all on Guard Mode, all selected, and simply hit a hotkey. BTW, if/when the Glorious Sewing Machine stutters, hotkeyD-D or backspace-RClick will reset the ornery unit(s). I'll add the substance of this remark to the Halberd commentary.
It is amazing how effective it is as you show. All I do up to now is placing any cheap units in front of the pikes, and let the pikes become a supporting spears for the cheap units. I am not good at micro managing my units...
Put a cheap melee unit two rows deep in front of the pikes and group them together. Once they are in a group, you can manoeuvre them without having to micro adjust their deployment with every movement.
The problem with taking halberds and pikes of guard mode is that the often end up facing the wrong way during an engagement and get slaughtered if your not microing them. This issue doesnt happen with guard mode on. Only problem is guard mode makes them less effective at killing but keeps the unit cohesion better.
This technique is awesome. I experimented with the "backspace + attack" method with crossbowmen so they can still use their crossbows at melee range, and it worked beautifully. To make doing this easier, I changed the key for the "halt" command from "backspace" to "space" so that I don't have to reach for the former key.
There is a way to make it work without any micro (though it is less effective) place a line of pikemen behind a line of infantry (like feudal knights) and keep guard mode on, their pikes will stay down and hold the enemy in place. But this tactic in the video is mostly for sieges where there is more time to micro. Thanks
@Alvi Syahri oh, it definatly does. Pikemen + cheap infantry, then when you feel like the enemy unit is about to break turn off guard mode and the pikemen will start sawing their way through the enemy.
I think I know how I’m going to deploy my pikemen in the future. Just wish the devs didn’t make it micro intensive because we do know need to pay attention how the battle actually goes.
I used to try imitating real-life Pike and Shot tactics by putting a unit of Musketeers right in front of my pike units where their pikes would still go over them to keep them protected but because I never knew about the back space trick they would still let go of their pikes quickly and leave my gunpowder units vulnerable. Now I am going to try your way and see if that will work better. I do wish if we didn't have to micromanage the unit to keep their pikes down and even with what you have shown it still seems annoying to use them because of that, the only other alternative seems to be editing the files to remove their 2nd weapons like To Nerd Is Human did but that goes in the opposite direction and makes them overpowered to the point they break the game and destroy any infantry unit. Hopefully if we ever get a Remaster like Rome did the makers of it can listen to guys like you who have played this game for years and try to remove that bug so that Pikes can be reasonably overpowered without going overboard but not useless without heavy micromanagement.
Easiest solution is in the already existing kingdoms expansions, doesn't require any editing, and the are mostly fixed. You still may need to backspace once in a while but it mostly works as intended in the expansions.
I used to do this back in Rome 1 where I used to stack 2 lines of Macedonian Phalanx together and watch the enemy just melt away. Rome 1 did pikemen right and only 2 or 3 of the enemy soldiers would get past the pike points while the rest were kept *firmly* at bay while getting butchered.
You're going to want to put muskets in front, use them to soften up the enemy, then have pikemen march up. Make sure to have at least SOME infantry on the sides and one or two cav. These are modernized Macedonian tactics, and work best when the pikes are used as the anvil and not the hammer.
This was so impressive! I never knew pikemen were this powerful! You learn something new in Medueval 2 total war, its like for example when leaving any musketeers on skirmish mode makes them fire by rank! Unlike leaving them on fire at will without skirmish mode makes them fire then wait a while untill they fire again.
@@jesseontiveros5377 the pikemen or the musketeers? If you leave skirmish on for musketeers, it looks like they fire by rank and fire faster than skirmish being off, works for all campaigns.
I found how the unit work. I take 4 units of pikes and make a porcupine defense 360 from all angles it's impenetrable (except achers). Defenseive only. It's useful in Empire Total War as well.
I don’t know why I never considered forming two pike units on top of each other! Twice as dense makes more sense in every way! (Minus being an ideal target for a cannon ball) Also I found that creating a formation consisting of two pike squares of landsknecht together with x1 unit of up-armored forlorn hope formed in three rows and tightly packed immediately behind the pikes drastically improves their ability to fight off heavy infantry. Once the enemy meets your pike wall order the forlorn forward to help break up the enemy. It even adds to the historical authenticity:)
thats odd, ive never encountered that problem with pikes before. but I have done this thing where if you can flank a unit of infantry with a pike unit, you can simply walk them into the back of the enemy and they just get slaughtered as they are sandwiched into it.
So, it seems it would be a good idea to mod the secondary weapon out as well as lessen the between-man distance to have the same effect without all the micro.
