I heard on the arcade version of this game (I never played it), you are rescuing your girlfriend but for some unknown reason it was deleted from the NES version. It's weird that the game never explained you rescuing anyone, the ending didn't claim you as a hero, and it never showed you rescuing anyone and/or winning anything so it's weird after you defeat the last bad guy, the end credits start at 18:12.
