One of the defining songs of my adolescence. Teenagers, at least in my day, take their favorite rock stars to be philosophers and guides to living. That certainly was me. A delight to see your reaction.

Steven Tyler says he wrote the lyrics when he was 14. His father trained at Julliard, and he'd lay under the piano for hours as a child, listening to his father play. Perhaps my favorite Aerosmith song is No More No More, which opens with the lyrics: "Blood stains the ivories of my Daddy's baby grand, I ain't seen the daylight since we started this band". Peace.

When I was teaching Psychology, one of my students asked me [in 2010] which was one of the first bands you went to see live. I said Aerosmith. He asked, 'when?'. When I said 1974, he said, 'fuck me, have they been going that long?' I just had to smile and nod my head.

Stephen Tyler is always mentioned in top 10 Rock frontmen….and his voice has held up over the years…..Jimmy Page has done some work with Aerosmith and, according to rumor, wanted Stephen to tour in Robert Plants place after Robert refused to do so after the successful2007 Celebration Day concert. Stephen decided to stay with Aerosmith ……..Aerosmith broke just after Led Zeppelin, and was in their shadow for a time….many were always comparing them ….as they had similar styles, and Tyler was in the Robert Plant mold. But honestly, I’ve come to appreciate the major talent of all the members….and their staying power remind me of The Stones….

    • @SyedRewinds

@@SyedRewinds agree. David Coverdale also. Coverdale made an album with Plant in 1991 or 92 which is really damn good. It really pissed Robert off….which might have been part of the reason Jimmy did it. But when Plant contacted Jimmy about collaborating again on Zeppelin music, Jimmy dropped Coverdale like a hot potato and rejoined Robert. That album DVD and tour were amazing. Called No Quarter tour

It was their first hit song, and it was (and is) one of the greatest songs in Rock 'n' Roll history.
(Too bad they never came anywhere close to that height again; if they had, people would put Aerosmith in the same category as Led Zep and The Stones.)

I don’t care what anyone says, they are in that tier with Led Zep and the Stones. They are America’s best band! You can’t name another band with the catalog that they have. Not even Metallica! Sweet Emotion was pretty high up there too!

Great reaction! This song will endure long after members of Aerosmith are long gone and me gone with them. Back in the 70s' a few popular TV shows or TV movies in the US would have its setting partially take place in Europe and occasionally, they would include the sound of the Hi/Lo siren from an Ambulance. This sound became for me, an eerie, somewat spookie sound that spoke to me of life threatneing danger - the repetive Hi/Lo riffs in Dream On always gave me a similar feeling. MIxed with the lyrics that also reflect a person looking back on their life,
( "Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away")
I always felt the lyrics and riff gave a similar vibe - causing me to reflect on my life, which seems to speed ever faster towards my own end - the lyrics and feelings hit me then and still does to this day

  • @dmCurator

Their first four studio albums are the core of their catalog, all in the style of 70s rock. It's hard for me to think of another American rock band that had a better four consecutive album run. That's what I listen to, anyway.

Mr. Steven (Talarico) Tyler is known as "The Demon Of Screamin' ", because of songs like this and quite a few others. He was, for better or worse, a judge on American Idol, which brought him and the band a new round of fame a few years ago. All the other members, Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer are superb, professional musicians, and have been for over half a century. Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, Grammy's, MTV Awards, Movies, World Tours, splits and reunions, hit songs, some bombs, Multi-Platinum Albums, marriages, divorces, famous kids, Liv Tyler is Steven's daughter, this band has done it ALL. And then some. Anything from their first four albums is stellar, Train Kept A Rollin', Lord Of The Thighs, Toys In The Attic, Back In The Saddle, etc.

I first heard this song as the Morgan James cover with Postmodern Jukebox and I was blown away. That led me to investigate this and other classics of my youth and gave me a real appreciation of them. I would still recommend that you check out the Postmodern Jukebox version. That does not take anything away from this masterpiece. It is different but neither more nor less wonderful.

1970's Aerosmith is so different from 1990's Aerosmith -- and 1980's Aerosmith is somewhere in between. As a person of 1962, I of course favor the 70's up until the Coke took them over about the time of Draw The Line and they had to break off for a while. But the run from 1973 to 1978 was something else, man! Aerosmith, Get Your Wings, Toys In the Attic, and Rocks are among the best four consecutive hard rock albums release in that decade.

This was around junior high when I was pulling around with my friends and Cutting Loose. This is probably their most notable song of all time but every song is album turns out to be amazing. Check some of them out. Incredible. Check out Mama Kin. Or, one-way Street. Or, nobody goes there. Or the incredible cover of the wonderful old black hopping blues song by Rufus wainwright, walking the dog. Listen to the original first, it's easily findable on youtube. And then listen to their cover of it. That whole first album just smacked you in the face and it was so raw..

Another great Areosmith track is "Janie's got a gun".
It has a much darker tone. The lyric tells of a girl who was sexually abused by her father. Not the type of thing normally played on the radio at the time, but the song was good enough that the would-be censors couldn't keep it down, and it swept the charts. And to this day, the vocalist, Steven Tyler, runs a non-profit charity, named for the song, "Janie's Fund" to provide help for girls who are the victims of abuse. But the track is absolutely chilling, in a very good way.

Please sir , do Morgan James from PMJ .. Would love for you two combo your words to her voice .. Love your opinion of what you see .. Her hits on this song are the highest I ever seen ..
