Many Pokemon Trainers ask the question: “Is it worth it to buy a World Championship Deck?” Replicas of the 60-card decks used by the World Champions of each year, World Championship decks are quite possibly the strongest, most finely tuned and competitive decks from their respective Standard.
However, due to their silver border and commemorative card back, the cards within them are not tournament legal and can only be played with friends in casual games.
So are these decks a good deal for new players? Casual players? What about enfranchised and experienced trainers? Or are they not worth your poke-dollars? Let’s take a look!
A World Championship deck contains the following: 1 world championship booklet, 1 60-card champion deck, a special 2016 world championships pin, and a world championship begin-quotes deck box end quotes deck box, which is a small cardboard box that won’t hold these cards if you sleeve them.
These are the exact decks played by the World Champions of the Pokémon TCG
100% identical, so for only $12.99 you are getting one of the best decks in Standard
    for Pokémon TCG.
So the question is: WHY? Why buy these at all if the cards can’t be played with at Pokemon events and tournaments? Why spend money on cards you can’t play with at official events?
Well, the first answer to that is glaringly obvious: because the majority of players don’t play at official events or in tournaments, and so who cares if you are just playing with friends?
    Final Thoughts:
While not tournament legal, Championship decks have many applications for new and established players alike.
They can serve as a learning tool, to experience and understand finely tuned competitive decks.
They are a great and affordable way to play with some of the best standard decks of the year without spending the price of those decks.
In many ways, multiple copies of these are like a Pokemon TCG board game, something you can sleeve up and take down from the shelf to play with friends who may not even have standard decks of their own.
Amazing for anyone looking for high level, competitive play, but not looking to ever go down to official tournaments and events.

Dylan A if you have a local game store id say try to go there and see if they have a land box for draft then ask the store if they mind you trading lands for it. none of the several i go to tend to care as long as they still have the same amount in them when you're done but stores vary in policies so again check with them first.

I really wish Konami did this for Yu-Gi-Oh! for exactly this reason; it's a great way to get a ton of experience with competitive play in a card game before really becoming financially invested in it, which means a lot when most meta decks in something like Yu-Gi-Oh! range from $400-600 and a lot of my friends, and assuming a lot more people as well, see this as just too high of a barrier for entry for something that they might not even like after a couple weeks.

I've watched quite a lot of your "Is it worth it..." videos, and I'm getting the impression that overall Pokémon TCG generally has better value products than MTG, with a few exceptions (Commander, Challenger decks). The fact that every paper product provides access to its online equivalent is also great, even if the cash value of online products is not that high.

Hey professor, my local card shop allows these cards to be used only if you have the original copies of the cards. The store owner checks if the card sleeves you use are fully opaque, and that you down in fact own the correct amount of cards needed in replication for your deck. This is handy for those who don't want to be shuffling their expensive cards and potentially damaging them. Obviously this can vary from store to store, but I thought it was a neat concept that other players should possibly look into to help preserve the life of their cards.

I agreed with everything you said. One thing I would add is that players coming back would benefit from this kind of product because like myself coming back after nearly 20 years the meta changes and these decks help you adjust and learn how the game has changed over time. i would just say to buy the current year or last years deck due to it going from Prime cards to EX to GX to PRISM here soon. Still an amazing amazing product to learn how to play the game at a competitive level.

Thanks Prof for all the hard work you do with MTG and Pokemon. Just started getting into Pokemon, vids are helpful for me understanding the best way to get into Pkmn TCG. I assume YuGiOh is not a TCG covered by your channel. Which is ok, because I know MTG is the big kahuna. Brings me to a valid question of any recommendations for a good channel for YGO noobs? Recently got a few assorted YGO TCG merch, trying to sort out if and where to begin with that. Really love your coverage of MTG and Pokemon.

I work at an arcade in charge of the prizes. I don't actually play Pokemon, but Pokemon products are consistently in high demand for us. I've been getting the EX/GX boxes, but have recently decided to switch it up a bit with these champion decks. Having watched your videos on both products, I feel I'm better EDUCATED (haha bad joke) at what I should be stocking. I was a bit hesitant on getting the champion decks precisely because they're not tournament legal, and I know in the days when I DID play way back in its origins, I refused to play with people who did get these decks. However, your arguments are quite compelling, and I'm glad I made the switch. I'll still probably go for those big boxes too (shelf presence does help a product sell), but I'll make a point in looking up the particular cards. I never realized people preferred the special coin/figure/pin over the big card. I personally would love to have a big version of a card I would play, but I'm not the one in touch with this game's community.

One of the best thing about these product are for competative players with multiple decks. While i build decks only with cards i can play in actual tournaments it lets me use those more expensive pieces in my other decks. Back when shaymin was 50 dollars plus, i owned 2 of them so i would use 2 proxy shaymins for other decks. And i also use them to teach kids at my league who are above the level my sleeved up starter decks but dont have money to buy all the cards they need to play competativly against my decks. Since i am a proffesor for pokemon its my job to teach them and these help a lot.

I like using these for proxies for decks that I want to make. At my local leauge, we have a lot of younger kids so the guy who runs it has said that using proxies there is alright. When I make my decks what I do is I'll start out with a deck majority made of either these or the printed version proxies and as I get the cards I'll swap them out.

You actually can play with these decks at some events! The most common pokemon tcg event is called Pokemon league. It's extremely casual, no tournament, no matchmaking, no prize support, just an open play environment where players of all skill levels can practice, trade, and earn promo cards just for showing up. Due to their casual nature, proxies like the world championship cards are pretty commonly used. While you can't by one of these decks and take a regional tournament, there are still plenty of in-store play opportunities for people who purchase these decks!

I wish MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh, Cardfight Vanguard and Force of Will made products just like this. I love playing with my world championship decks against my little brother. I get to play the game at a high level and he gets to have fun playing Pokémon. The two best things IMO about card games is building your own deck, and playing with the best cards. It is super expensive to build your own deck with the best cards and moderately expensive to build your own casual deck. Championship decks are a cheap way to play with the best cards and I hope that they continue to be printed for years to come.

My local store has World Championship Decks from 2006 and 2007. Have considered purchasing them, however they would only serve as a history lesson since the meta is vastly different today (and PTCG Online helps with that). I do wonder if they're worth anything, though, being as old as they are.

I still have mine from 2006, they are not insanely valuable as they were printed in pretty huge amounts but the formats were a lot of fun so grab some friends and play them!

Man it would be awesome if Wizards did this with MTG again! Why they stopped was a foolish move.
By the way, LOVE the channel!

Back in the day I got a couple for $10 each. The Finkle and Hermit decks. My LGS had some older championship cards for $5-$10 each

Are the individual cards collectible? They have low resale value as individual cards since they’re “not real”, right?

I really like these. Great price, and tons of fun to play against each other. The sleeves are indeed crap though.

honestly, they should rise the value a little and make the energy cards tournament legal, with the WC logo

I wish magic would do this again. I don't ever go to my local game store anymore and the two modern decks that I spent hundreds of dollars on have lost a lot of value with recent reprints. It'd be cool to have more high level decks I could just play casually with friends. I honestly don't even play magic anymore due to the price of a good modern/legacy deck.

My brother and I bought two intro decks looking for a ptcg experience while at a mtg standard the other week, they turned out to be rather boring but these might give us our pokefix for tcg for only 24$ wow!
