Difference Between Transitions Gen 8, XtrActive, and New XtrActive Polarized Lenses

- Опубликовано: 27 июл 2024
- This is a real-life comparison of Transitions Generation 8, the XtrActive Gray, and the new (2021) XtrActive Polarized optical lenses used for eyeglasses.
*The Gen. 8 Transitions have improved upon the Gen. 7 with faster darkening times, faster time to clear, and are the most common option for most people.
*The XtrActive are great for people looking for lenses that will partially darken in the car, as well as get darker outside than most other photochromics.
*The newest addition to the Transitions line are the XtrActive Polarized lenses. These are best suited for who like having the benefits of the regular XtrActive, but who would like the additional advantages of having polarized lenses as well.

Awesome Neil, thanks for the in-depth review and attention to differences in this video. Helped me make my decision. Thanks!
We appreciate the demo, your comparisons, have been very beneficial. I was never knowledgeable about the differences of transitions, thanks to my go to RUclipsrs, there is a plethora of information that has made a world if difference of staying informed!!!!! XtrActive will work for me.....Thanks for sharing!!!!!
Thank you for the demo and explanation. It is most appreciated.
thank you for been so gentle to us and take the time to let us know about each of one of them please thanks
Would have been nice to see the transition time back to clear.

Thank you for this! I just bought xtractive that suite my daily usage.
Fantastic video I get headaches/migraines and I always wear sunglasses outside. I ordered the active lenses and was concerned how light they got inside. Your video answered all my questions. Thank you
Excellent video helped me to select the Eee active polarize. Thank you so very much thank you thank you thank you was having a had to before your detailed video 😊
This was most helpful. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this awesome video. Most helpful. 🙏
Thank you for the informative video, it helped me to make a decision on which Transition lens to purchase.
Thank you for the demonstration. Was very helpful. Seeing the three colors would be great and seeing them revert inside would be good. 👍
I❤️ my Transition lenses. I think I have the first or second generation lenses. These don’t get as dark as the previous lenses I had, but I still love them !!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for the demonstration!
Thank you so much for making this video!!!!
This is so helpful! Thank you!
Excellent review Neil! Thank you for taking time for this.
You’re very welcome! 😎
Thanks brother for explaining in a simplest manner 😊 have a good day brother
You're very welcome and thank you!
Fantastic...a real time video! They turn dark much quicker than I thought they would :)
Yeah, it was practically instantaneous, and I thought theyd take minutes.
I hoped he'd show them lighten after going back in though...and I thought all 3 were a little tinted inside?
Not sure if gen 8 or the new polorized ones would be better for me out of the house...
@wolfpup3 Here’s a video showing them get clear ruclips.net/video/9YIbdW0Dku4/видео.htmlsi=6DdvtWC_23S6qJvp
Cheers, good show and informative.
Helped a lot , thank you
muy buena comparación, super informativa, muchas gracias.
Video as usual is very informative
Awesome, thanks Billie! 😎
Hey!
Really easy to understand!

Thank you so very much!!!
Terrific video. Great to see how they work in the real world.
im excited for mine to arrive , GEN 8 SIGNATURE in grey 😻😻😻
THANK you, really excellent!
You’re welcome! 😎
Great video. Thank you.
I'm going tomorrow to pick frames and get Xtractive lenses. My eyes are particularly sensitive to light both inside and outside. I'm looking forward to them. Thanks for this great comparison.
That’s awesome, so glad this was helpful! Thank you for sharing 😎
Really nice review. Do any of the transition lenses come in other colors besides gray? Thank you!
Brown and green, they’ve also added some other colors like sapphire, emerald, etc.
La mejor explicación!!!
Hi, I'm getting my first prescription glasses, I'm a driving instructor, all day in the car, always wearing my sunglasses in sunny days, which ones would you recommended?
This is the best review.
THANK YOU
I have my xtractive for two years right it's not xtractive anymore after my second year it's barely turning black. I well never get another one anymore. Instead I'm going to get prescription sunglasses for the summer and spring and normal glasses for the rest of the year. I thought it was going to be different but the same thing happened to me several years ago.
I like your channel. No wonder you have so many views. I have a question for you: Transitions, how many years do they last for with average use? What happens, do they get less dark over time?
Thank you for your kind words! The latest generation of Transitions (Gen. 8) last even longer than previous generations, at a little over 2 years before they start losing their ability to darken/lighten. They will still darken/lighten after, they just won't get as dark/light as they did previously. This is also only an average and ultimately depends on individual usage. Thank you again! 😎
Will the xtractive polarized help with night time headlight glare? Sorry just read that polaized need uv light to become active.
What's the price difference between the three of them?
Thank you.
Does Transitions 8 turn back more slowly than XTR? I read it might.
Thanks for a very useful video. Would I be right in thinking that the Transitions get darker in overcast conditions ?
The XtrActive, yes. :)
Thank you for the amazing review! It's very helpful for people who are in doubt what to choose. Could you please share which brand of lenses is reviewed here? Is it Essilor?
Yes, usually Essilor, but also from Hoya, Younger, etc.
@@UseMyFrame thank you for response. I meant the brand of lenses exactly on this video. As well, I don't see Le Perle in your list, do you review them?
@@user-ed8ls7rf4r These are from Essilor and Younger Optics. Haven't heard of Le Perle
Is it just me or do the xtractive lenses get darker than the xtractive polarising ones? I thought the xtractive polarising were supposed to go to grade 3 tint in the sun?
Hello, good video. Is there a cost difference between the three options? Thank you.
Thanks Mike! Yes, there’s a price difference between the three. Here’s a link to our order page with our most current pricing: usemyframe.com/products/prescription-lenses
I ordered the more expensive polarized ones from America’s best, but I can’t tell if they’re polarized. How do I test it? It failed all the polarized tests I found online, but those tests were for sunglasses, not transitions.
what percentage are the base lenses?
Will the polarized XtraActive have a more glassy/mirror reflection vs XtraActive? Thinking my Optometry ofc is not ordering the correct thing (have had to send back b/c headlights are blinding @ night) & I'm getting headaches when driving. Its frustrating!!
Thank you!!!
Is it true the xtractive polarized get dark inside the vehicle but it Won't activate the polarized effect ??? What's the point then
Very helpful..my main concern is do the Gen 8 become clear inside? Lets say compared to no transitions at all...is there a slight tint to them which I do not like at all..or have they improved that as well?. My last transactions were 4 years ago so I assume this will be a lot better..Thanks
Yes the regular Gen 8 are totally clear indoors, the XtrActive have a slight tint.
@@UseMyFramehow about the new XtrActive Polarized inside tint? Doesn’t the Polarized have more tint inside then the XtrActive?
Thanks for making this. Got my first glasses last year but I am wanting something with a bit a of tint indoors and plenty outdoors. That polarized one looks good. I use a lot of polarizing filters in my photography and it still sometimes amazes me how much glare that can take away.
Very true. One thing to be aware of though, if you use a polarizing filter on a camera and are wearing polarizing lenses on your glasses, they will cancel each other out. I found this out when my camera viewfinder turned black. Finally realized I had to take off the glasses to see. Thought at first something was wrong with my camera. duhhhhh
@@tmxv-bg8cz I had no idea, thanks for the heads up. I have noticed what I think is the same effect when I have wore regular polarized sunglasses in the past and looked at a smartphone screen. That could be an issue. I just got new glasses with the regular Transitions Xtractive a few months ago and have been pretty happy with them so far but have still been thinking of getting a polarized option but now you have me thinking I might pass on that.
Glad this might help. Once I realized that the polarized Transitions lenses would interfere with my photography, I got the standard Transitions and use a pair of polarized Cocoons sunglasses over my normal glasses when I am driving. For me, this is the best of both worlds. The Cocoons with the copper polarized lenses are wonderful for driving, and then when I leave the car, the Transitions take over and I can see really well to take photos. @@murrayshekelberg9754
Wow very much advanced now a days
Dear Sir,
Which of these lenses would You recommend for someone who is light sensitive because of chronic neurological condition, specially indoors (electronic markets/tv screen) to minimize blepharospasm ? I would be grateful for Your opinion
I would recommend the XtrActive (middle lens in the video). It gets darker than all others, and even had a slight tint indoors that can also provide visual comfort/relief indoors.
Do the polarized get as dark as the non polarized xtractive?
Good comparison... But I would have liked to see you get in your car, and show us how the different lenses perform there... and then take them inside and let us see how long it takes for them to return to clear. Also, can you tell us what the ambient temperature outside was? I understand that Transitions don't get as dark on hot days.
We plan on making a video showing how they darken in the car soon, thank you for the suggestion! I think it was about 75 degrees (F) that day. Here's a video link showing their fade back to clear times: ruclips.net/video/9YIbdW0Dku4/видео.html&pp=ygUrdXNlbXlmcmFtZSBjb21wYXJlIHh0cmFjdGl2ZSBob3cgbG9uZyBjbGVhcg%3D%3D
@@UseMyFrameWhich lens still have the most tint inside a building in normal room light?
Would the extractive lens darken more inside the car compared to transitions gen 8 which actually don't? I am wearing transitions gen 8 and they are still light in tint even though the sun outside the car is blinding.
Yes, the XtrActive partially darken inside the car, the Gen 8 do not.
Currently looking into the XtraActive polarized.
What color do the polar lenses come in? I prefer brown.
Seems like not a lot of places carry them. When referencing their site they list places that do carry them and upon calling an optical store will tell you they aren’t polarized.
Thank you for this video and option to order from you.
There are currently 2 lines to the Transitions products, the XtrActive and the XtrActive Polarized. So when calling around, just make sure the person you're speaking to understands the difference (not all will). As of today (11/17/23) the XtrActive polarized are only available in the gray color.
Progressive, transitions , extractive , polorized , .... in 1.74 ... with a very high prescription ... ...?? Do they make them ??? And is there something from Zeiss that compares????
I noticed on Transitions website there is also the option to add mirror tinting to the XTRActive New Generation lenses. Is this a good investment for glasses that will be worn pretty much all the time? Do they cause any type of reflection that would interfere with vision when not outdoors? And would this work on progressives? Thanks in advance for suggestions.🙂
Great question! They are a subtle mirror and suitable for indoor and night time wear, so there's very little disruption compared to regular XtrActive wear, comparatively speaking.
They are called, "Style Mirrors" and that describes their intention really well. They are for those looking for Transitions lenses, but want to add a little extra, "style" to them and differentiate from the typical gray and brown. For the most part, you don't even notice it's there, but as they darken the mirror effect becomes more and more noticable. So you get the benefit of having a stylish pair of sunglasses that you can also wear comfortably when regular sunglasses with a mirror would be too dark. It's a stylish convenience. :)
Between xtractive new gen and xtractive polarized which one gets darker ?
It seems the darker and faster Is extractive ... Beautifull color..gen8 and polarized are grey purple
Are Extractive good for interior view? For example, are them good for watching TV? I mean the normal extractive
Thank you
Yes, the XtrActive are still good and recommended for inside use. Even though they have a very slight tint indoors, it's usually too subtle to notice and some actually prefer it due to light sensitivities. :)
Have you got experience of the Transitions Drivewear? I know they are tinted all the time but do you know how quick they transition and if they also have a lifespan when they start slowing transitioning?
Yes, I keep a pair of Drivewear in my car. They're transitioning is pretty subtle and not really noticeable while wearing them driving, and that's what I like about them - I don't really have to think about it and I always have the best color lenses while driving, even if I drive through an overcase area.
The pair I have are about 2 1/2 years old and working fine. Most Transitions have an optimal performance of between 1 1/2 and 2 years.
useful video
superb ❤❤
Is it me or do the polarized appear to darken less?
I want to test New XtrActive Polarized Lenses when seen on a cellphone. because I have transition-polarized and can't see normally.
So, if i am a taxi driver and usually on a night shift, which technology should i choose?
Cause very popular in Russia US Younger Optics and Japanese Hoya with polarized Drivewear - are forbidden at night.
I’d recommend the blue light filter with anti reflective coating.
I need a pair of progressive transitional glasses, that are clear enough for reading inside, looks like the gen 8 are the best choice?
Yes, if you want them as clear as possible indoors, the regular Transitions are probably the best choice.
I’m getting transition lenses
Are the extractive polarized high index plastic or polycarbonate? Chromatic abberation with the extractive polarized? I'm interested in the polarized transitions.
The XtrActive Polarized are available in CR39 plastic, polycarbonate, Trivex, and high index 1.67.
Once I tried transition lenses I’ve never wanted to go back to normal lenses
I was curious to see how they transition back to clear indoors (like how long it took)?
ruclips.net/video/9YIbdW0Dku4/видео.html
my friend just got the transitions s and was so excited until he tried them out. Yes they are fast, however they dont get as dark as the xtra-actives which was his older pair and they have a tint inside just the xtra-active ones...So it seems that xtraactive are best. Wanted to hear your feedback?
Exactly! Gen S its faster changing/fading, but its equal to Gen 8 in how much gets darker, dont waist your money in Gen S, choose Xtractive.
Is it me, or does the XtrActive look the darkest of the 3?
A couple of things. As Joshua mentioned, it would be good to see the transition from dark to clear also.
For completeness, you should probably also do the non-Transitions branded photochromic lens as well like you did in the 2015 video.
Rather than just a plain white tray, it may be useful to print up lines or use a newspaper so you can see through the glass and get a little context of how it would be in real world situations.
For the XtraActive and XtrActive Polarized lenses, also show how dark they get when you are in a car and compare it to the gen 8. Presumably the gen 8 would be clear because the car windshield blocks UV rays. The advertising claim is XtrActive will get dark in a car, but the question is how dark do they get. So far, I don't recall many videos showing this.
Please compare how much polarization XtraActive Polarized lenses are compared to a standard polarized lens. Compare both when the glasses are in the shade (and hence not dark) and when you are in sunlight. In addition to reducing glare, it would be helpful to know if the glasses suffer the usual problems with displaying certain LCDs (for example my daughter's 2012 Prius's LCD cannot be seen with polarized lenses).
It might also be helpful to compare the effect of the optional anti-reflective coatings does to the glasses, and whether it affects the transitions between dark/light, and for the Polarized lenses whether it impacts the polarization.
And finally, please mention that XtraActive Polarized is not available at this time in bi-focal and tri-focal glasses. I was excited to learn that XtraActive Polarized existed (and usemyframe.com seems to be the only online vendor right now), and then I was disappointed that I couldn't get it in tri-focals.
Great suggestions and I’d like to second them.
I also would like to know how the Polarized version works with LED screens (e.g. satellite navigation screens)
THIS! As a mountain biker it's really important how quickly they go back to clear, or nearly clear
How well do these work for high prescription, high index lenses?
We make high prescriptions in all of these Transitions colors, never a problem
Hey, great comparison video. I have the xtractive but they do not change in the truck for some reason. So I’m going to get the polarised (I know they don’t change behind glass). Obviously they are newly released in the US but I can’t get them in the UK. Do you know when they would be released to the rest of the world?! Cheers
Awesome question Thomas, and thank you! We've shipped overseas (and Canada) before! Go through our lens order page and when you're at the checkout page, you should see an option for delivery to you (in the UK), as long as you have created an account and submitted your address (the postal rates are determined accordingly). I'll follow up via email following this comment. Thank you again for watching! :)
Xtractive available in wat colours??
And can progressive lenses be made in Xtractive transition lenses
XtrActive are available in gray and brown and you can also get them in progressives.
Which one should I get or wait to gen 9 I have gen 8 but gen 9 never came out
Ended up going with the emerald green gen 8 lenses the Walmart I went to didn’t have the xtractive In any other color than grey
Doesn't the color affect the tones of the environment?
Do the extractive ones look like tinted glasses when you are inside ? Not very clear ?
Yes, there's a notable tint indoors with the XtrActive (maybe a 5 to 10%). Wearing them you wouldn't usually notice, nor if someone is looking at you would they notice; but much more noticeable when placed on a white background like in this video. Some who are very light sensitive actually prefer this.
Do transition gen 8 have bluelight filters?
Yes, that’s another improvement of the Gen 8 over the 7, is they help reduce blue light. They’re not as effective as a dedicated blue light coating, but certainly helpful nonetheless.
Can Anti-Reflective coating be added to Axtraactive polarized?
Yes, the ar coating can safely be added to any lenses and the lenses will still darken, but maybe only a couple percent less dark as lenses without the ar coating.
How do the polarized lens compare to high quality fishing glasses.?
High quality fishing glasses are usually polarized. The polarization helps reduce the surface glare on the surface of the water so you can see below.
Good evening, sir, can you tell me the difference between prescription sunglasses and the XtrACTIVE Polarized lenses? I had polarized lenses before but did not block out the sun, and I am sensitive to light. Any feedback will be much appreciated. Thank you
Sunglasses will be dark all the time and are usually polarized or just tinted. The XtrActive polarized lenses will be clear outdoors and darken and polarize outside.
I would recommend the XtrActive polarized lenses to those wanting a convenient option of polarized sunglasses that can also be used inside; however, for those that are very light sensitive and want very dark sunglasses, the regular polarized sunglasses would be a better option. Also, for those wanting sunglasses while driving, I'd recommend polarized sunglasses even though the XtrActive polar partially darkens, it's not nearly as much as the dedicated polarized lenses).
Thank you, sir, for your honesty

@@neiluher242 And how about showing how the XtraActive versus XtraActive Polarized compare for satellite navigation and other LED screens?
@@The-Splat Great idea Mark, thank you! :)
iam going on a huntch that if iam on a computer or phone alot that i dont want my daily glasses to be the polarized
You are right as the polarization will interfere with your screens. The Transitions XtrActive Polarized is only polarized as it darkens so that wouldn’t be an issue if indoors.
Here's my question: was the polarized Xtractive as dark as the regular Xtractive to the naked eye? In the video it looks lighter but I am somewhat assuming that's because of the nature of polarization on a digital sensor.
You're right, the XtrActive was a little darker than the XtrActive Polarized. :)
@@UseMyFrame thanks so much. I got the regular XtrActive and love the transitions (although the prescription seems to have been borked.. but that's not about the transitions😝)
Your video was very instrumental in my choice
How much is the xtraactive polarized on prescription glasses 🤓 ?
It will depend on many factors, but here’s a link to our prices so you can get an idea of their cost in the different materials, options, etc. usemyframe.com/products/prescription-lenses
XtrActive is darker IMO. I am getting Xtractive. My first transitions glasses.
So the XtrActive Polarised is slightly lighter than the regular XtraActive?
That’s what I noticed from making the video as well.
Do XtrActive Polarized interfere with LCD screens? Can you still use your phone outside when they darken?
These actually polarize as they darken. So in their clear state they won’t affect computer screens at all, but as they darken and polarize, yes they can affect how you perceive screens; though in my experience, not as much as regular polarized lenses.
@@UseMyFrame Thanks! I did a bit of Googling since yesterday, and I think this might actually be less of a problem than it was, maybe because modern screens are a built a bit differently? I've avoided polarised glasses for years, because - many years ago - I bought a pair and then discovered that it made everything on my phone invisible - literally the screen went dark.
When inside using a computer I could generally switch to another pair of glasses, I guess my concern is being outside with just a pair of XTRAactive and not being able to read the notifications on my phone when I need to. I'm basically blind without my glasses and don't want to need to take my glasses off and hold my phone right up close to my face, thus looking like a bit of a twit.
"Affect how you perceive screens" makes it sound more like, things might go a bit funny but are still usable?
Based on your testing would you say that xtractive gets darker than new xtractive polarized?
Yes, great question! Even though it started getting cloudy while making that video, they had equal sunlight. So while both will get darker than shown in that video, the XtrActive was darker than the XtrActive Polarized.
@@UseMyFrame could you do a follow up video between the two xtraactive ones, and test things like glare reduction etc. Nothing crazy but just to get an idea. Thank you sr
Also could you include the the transition vantage in the comparison
Great idea about comparing the two XtrActives, thank you!
Hello great video
I wonder if the last one demoed is the XreActive with variable polarization?

Thanks
What about the "Drivewear" lenses
We'll cover those in a separate video. Make sure to subscribe! :)
Which is the darkest im confused polarised looks softer than gen 8
As far as which is the darkest of the three, I think the XtrActive (non polarized) was the darkest.
the transitions xtractive is more dark than the gen 8?
Yes, the XtrActive is darker than the Signature Gen. 8. The XtrActive also partially darken in the car and are best for those that are very sensitive to light and want the darkest option available.
I have a really weird question.
What if I wanted glasses with lenses that weren't cut to shape?
Glasses made with the full sized slug without any cutting.
How much would that cost?
No problem! Just place your order via our website and put in the comments that you don't want them cut down. :)
