  • This is a highly requested video on Transitions® Lenses! In this video, we explore the differences between the Signature® Chromea7® lenses, GEN8™ lenses, and Transitions® Xtractive®! Dr. Denton shows each transition lens in a car with the sunroof closed, then with the sunroof open to allow some UV exposure. Then she steps outside to show the full transition of the lenses with complete UV exposure. GEN8™ lenses were just recently released and are hot on the market right now! This means that Signature® Chromea7® lenses are on their way out to be replaced with the newer technology of GEN8™, so you may not find them to be available in many places, but they were used in this video for purposes of comparing them to their newer counterpart. #transitions #Gen8 #transitionlenses

    I just got EXTRAactive with my new prescription glasses. Mine turn darker, faster than the demonstration. They get very dark through car windshields are great outside, and there is NO tint inside. I personally don’t want to change glasses throughout the day. I wore them last year and my new ones are exactly the same perfect sunglasses for me. I highly recommend them.

    Dr. D. you do great videos on Transitions. I've worn Xtra Active gray for about 6-7 years now, & I will never go back to just clear lenses. Light sensitivity & occasional migraines were my motivation, plus it's great not to have to change into sunglasses. Heat imo has more effect on the fast darkening than say sun on a cool day. I love the XtraActive - and my script is Very Strong (farsighted, astigmatism, & progressive trifocals).

    I live in Canada, and have noticed that my transitions get much darker in cold weather. Or maybe it's the extra glare from the snow. So when entering a building, it is very dark until the transitions clear. Hence, I welcome Gen8 if they really do switch from dark to clear faster than previous generations.

    Thank you, Doctor, for posting this video. However, with all due respect the Xtractive lenses performed far below expectations within the car. The change was barely noticeable once you put them on, and surprisingly only slightly darker once your sunroof was opened. It was only when you stepped outside that it really darkened, and that is not at all as this lens is advertised.

    • @EyeSchoolwithDrD
      @EyeSchoolwithDrD  4 года назад +6

      I’m glad you were able to get some good info from the video! The Xtractive does get a bit darker in the car, but it will depend on a lot of things. (Cloud cover, type of vehicle, where the windows are etc) Ultimately if you really want a dark lens for day driving I do kinda lean toward either the transitions drivewear or separate sunglasses personally. I did a video on driving in xtractive vs drivewear if you want to check it out! But I have a lot more glasses than the average human, admittedly!

      I think the best option is keeping pair of polarized clip-ons (they're really inexpensive) in the car even if you're wearing photochromatic lenses you'll get extra protection from glare and still you don't have to bring your sunglasses around. I'm not getting the xtractive until they're making a polarized version.

    Thank you very much for this very informative video. However, I'd like to point out a minor mistake in your statement on UV protection level from your car's side window. I am from sunny Australia which is the capital of skin cancer in the world. Naturally I am interested in understanding UV protection in some common circumstances. You are right on the windshield screen, being laminated glass, is up to 99% UV protection, i.e. filtering out 99% or UVA and UVB. Driver and passenger side window typically is single layer from factory are less UV protective, but still filer out around 50% - 85% depending on the model and maker. You can ask your car manufacture for this information in related to the car model you have. They have official specification although it is not available to general public unless requested. I went even one step further bought a cheap UV meter and indeed confirmed what my car maker's specification. Btw, almost every one here down under can tint side window with UV protection film so long it meet legal requirement, such as minimum light transit rate.

    • @EyeSchoolwithDrD
      @EyeSchoolwithDrD  3 года назад

      Thank you for that addition to the info. I have definitely not done that much research on the true UV protection of the side windows. Much appreciated and will look into it!

    Thanks for these videos. I understand why you are comparing the various options of "Transitions" photochromic lenses. These are cool to know if you want to create a custom look for your glasses and personal style. They are a good excuse to own multiple pairs of glasses. The company itself NEEDS to do a much better job explaining and communicating what are their different options. I find that salespeople often do not offer them to consumers as they are confused and have no clue. Many just know of the standard transitions.

      Some feedback for your videos...it would be great whenever you feature the different product types to put up the actual title name of the product as you demo each one. It's a suggestion so people who are not in your industry to better understand what you are offering or for viewers to keep track of exactly what product you are speaking about. Note your videos are already good. This is a suggestion to improve.

    Great Video! I have a pair of Essilor Varilux Lens with Transitions XTRActive and a Varilux Fire Red Mirror Coating.
    XTRActive Grey with Fire Red Mirror Coating
    Pros
    + All visible light wavelengths activate the XTRAactive vs. UV activates the Transitions Gen8
    + Great for outdoor sports and driving, use them everyday for walking and running outside
    + Become much darker than Transitions Gen8, even more so when below 70 F outside
    + Better than Transitions Gen8 for outdoor activities and driving
    + Quick to darken and lighten, still work great after 1 year of daily use
    Cons
    - Prefer not to use indoors, too much light attenuation and too many internal reflections from indoor light sources
    - Try not to use these outside at night because of internal reflections from vehicle lights, street lights, etc.
    - Still usable after dusk, but prefer to wear Transitions Gen8 or non-Transitions lenses

    • @EyeSchoolwithDrD
      @EyeSchoolwithDrD  4 года назад +1

      Honestly this is a great question and one I hadn't thought of. I don't have any tunnels near me so I've never even considered it. I did some research and it seems the prevailing opinion is that in the event you wear Rx sunglasses the recommendation is to keep them on in tunnels assuming your vision would be worse with them off and the danger of taking eyes off the wheel in order to switch from sun to clear would be riskier than just leaving them on. For transitions lenses, they will not be 100% darkened while you're in the car anyway so one might assume they're a little safer than a dedicated sun lens. If I passed through a long tunnel that was just after a very sunny stretch every single day I would definitely be cautious of my eyewear. Make sure to follow the advice of your doc on this one. :)

      My cousin has glasses which have like a mini-frame with tinted prescription-free lenses that snaps on top of clear prescription via magnets so he can quickly switch between clear and tinted. I suggest you find those. P.S. They don't look silly, it's almost indistinguishable from normal lenses.

      My good friend does a lot of driving for his job and he uses Transitions Drivewear and swears by them. I have Xtractive, but I don't do a lot of driving. I have noticed that if I am driving and I go under bridges or if there's a highway overhead and some parts of the road are sunny and some are dark, I find that they take too long to adjust. If the sun is low on the horizon and casting shadows, it's also difficult for me. The tunnels that I have been through (not many) while wearing them have been ok because they've been well illuminated. I think if I drove a lot, I'd go with something polarized rather than just something that blocked out the sun.

    I rarely subscribe but im definitely subscribing to your channel Dr. The best video on this matter.
    Quick question please.
    I'm getting Flake 2.0 Oakley with prescription. I need to decide what's going to work best for me.
    I'm a tennis coach working in a place with a very hot summer. However, I coach a lot at night and it's outdoor, but I also coach during the day sometimes.
    Now I wear normal prescription glasses, but I really want to wear sport glasses when I'm on court.
    What you think could work best for me?
    I really wish to have lenses that go very dark during the day, and would love that they stay quite dark at night too, not as much as during the day but still clearly see the tint. Also, would be great to have them stay dark while driving. (Not sure if you get the same results inside the car and in the office or in court iutdoor at night.
    I'm thinking to get one pair with transition and one pair with full color but it's going to be very expensive.
    Again, my goal is to wear (almost) full dark during the day and sufficiently dark during the night.
    Thank you in advance for your advice.

    I hate when transitions are excessively dark on cloudy/ overcast days. I mean not many people walk around with sunglasses on overcast days, so why have transitions turn so dark when the sun isn't even out? I was really hoping you were going to say one of these lenses corrected this problem. Some company really needs to hurry up and address this issue.

    • @melissahouse3488

      That's troubling to hear. My neighbor said she tried transitions years ago and didn't like them because they stayed kind of dark while indoors at home. I don't know if her home didn't bring in adequate lighting but she didn't like them for that reason but said that was years ago and maybe they've improved. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Glasses just seem to get harder & harder to cover all your bases & get quality we love. 🤓🤔🧐❓

    • @nathanflores6272
      @nathanflores6272 Год назад

      That can NEVER be corrected lol. The lenses to change because of the sun light, they change because of the UV rays the sun gives off. On cloudy days UV rays are still coming down which is why the lenses transition on cloudy days…. SCIENCE

    fyi, xtra active are dark enough for skiing (I'm thinking snow, water, too, but they don't float ;) Somebody said dark in car, just a light tint for me, get dark glasses if you need that driving. But I mainly bike which is OK but almost too dark for biking in winter. Transitions get darker when cold, it's harder to see potholes in the shadows of trees in winter.

    Which coating do you prefer for the Xtractive, Prevencia or Sapphire?

    • @EyeSchoolwithDrD
      @EyeSchoolwithDrD  4 года назад +1

      You don't need Prevencia since Transitions are blue light protective, so you're fine to do Avance or Sapphire. But you can do Prevencia if you want your glasses to have the look of a blue or purple flash mirror when the lenses are dark.

    How do these lenses perform in Overcast weather. My issue with transition lenses, when I had them many years ago, is they would go dark in overcast weather, when I didnt neeed them to go dark. How do these newer transtion lenses adapt to overcast conditions ?

    Hello Doctor
    Today I'm going to purchase my eye glass
    Before I always use only normal clear vision glasses, now I have an idea about to use transition glass
    Which will suits for me?
    I'm a marketing person
    Mostly I was in driving for 20 min and then went inside shop for 30 min
    Then again driving another 20min and went inside another shop for 30 min like that repeatedly
    If I use transition glass will it affect my eye?
    Or
    Will if affect my vision makes darker when I enter the shop?
    Please give me some clear suggestion

    Is there XTRActive Gen 8? Or Signature Gen 8?
    Is the those one tested Gen 7?

    • @EyeSchoolwithDrD
      @EyeSchoolwithDrD  4 года назад

      So Signature 7 and Gen 8 are both what people call "regular transitions" and Xtra Active are the ones that get darker. Gen 8 is the upgrade to Sig 7 - in fact Sig 7 has been discontinued but I included it here for comparison. Your choices now will be either Gen 8 as a "regular transition" option or Xtra active as the extra dark option.
