I took a couple things from this. One is that Sonny was trying to get information from Donnie, the other was him testing Donnie to see how loyal a person he is. He wanted to know what Donnie and Lefty were up to in Florida, but he also wanted to see if Donnie would keep his mouth shut on what Lefty was up to (the night club). By Donnie not telling him anything, it’s a double edged sword. He is pissed that Donnie won’t tell him anything, but at the same time, he’s impressed that Donnie won’t rat on Lefty’s endeavors in Florida. Am I interpreting this correctly?
ditttch I have a feeling he was testing him, as he learned about the nightclub from someone else anyway; I'm assuming Sonny red may have had someone tell Sonny black about the night club so he could set him up to get busted... But that is pure speculation.
He wasn't testing Donnie. Wise guys have to kick up and the guys upstairs need to make noones holding down payment. Sonny suspects something's going on that he doesn't know about and wants to make sure the proper tribute is paid. Not telling sonny about lefty's ambitions definitely worked to Donnie's favour though, if you won't give up your secrets to the skipper who's about the whack you, no way you'll rat to the cops.
ditttch I don’t think it was a test, but I think he was impressed. He didn’t really know Donnie from nobody, but learned he was tough, loyal, and could be trusted.
