Excellent choices. Thank you for doing this and giving a brief description of each subwoofer. Looking forward to your top Sealed subwoofer compilation.
Thanks man!
Barrett, patiently waiting for your full JTR RS2 review. appreciate you.
Subscribed. 1st proper subwoofer list I have watched. I have been in this hobby for a long time and know of all the subs you mentioned. I have actually just downsized to dual pb4000s. New Zealand doesn't get any big boy subs so the SVS are kind of the only option and we also get hammered with prices so no 16 ultras for me. I had dual 7cft sealed 15s running off a pro amp and they were monsters but had to let them go. If you do a sealed list don't forget Deep Sea Sound and Funk Audio!
Love the list current have F-18s really interested in the RS2 from JTR!
I would love to check out a few subs from Rythmik one day. I think you would love the JTR's, they are one mean sub.
Some amazing subs here! I thought the SVS was a beast, but wow, I don’t think you would need two of those other monster subs. I can’t imagine hearing two of those on a system. Need to reinforce the whole house.
I would love to see more of these kind of videos.
Sealed Subwoofers and different price classes. 😉👍
Thanks for the suggestion brother, I would love to do more like these.
Agree. My ideal list would be sealed < 2k. Specifically Arendal 1723 1S or 2S are on my short list.
You’re the man, Barrett! Great video
Thanks brother!
Great list! Don’t think there is a better one out there.
Thanks brother, I appreciate that.
Love my tv2112...wish i could have afforded 2.
That 42 is a beast!
Thank you so much for this video. As usual JTR Captivator wins.
Can you also see Perilisten D215s vs JTR 4000ULF please?
Great vid Barrett! Perfect choices! Imagine the TV42 IPAL in its current configuration with the 8000 WATT amp!
Good stuff I have 2 psa 21inch ipal subs they are sum beast of subs but the JTR is my next sub down the road just because I'm curious
Great list, and I don’t think I’d change anything on it. Much more valuable than the useless, computer generated lists that have zero value in making a purchase decision. Well done!
Thanks brother, I appreciate that.
Hey mate, thanks for another awesome video. Btw, where did you buy your audio rack? Did you buy direct? or from another vendor.
I bought it from a Canadian dealer called Pacific Cabling on the West Coast of Canada. It is an MW rack model MWER27.
Nice review. Out of all, the PB16 is the only one aesthetically pleasing that could be placed in a living / family room. The others need to be in a dedicated room behind a screen.
SVS does know how to make a beautiful looking subwoofer!
Great list. I have a pair of PSA TV21 IPALs and they are insane. However, I believe the Moniprice THX 16” has more output than the SVS PB16.
I bet those TV21 Ipals hit harder than a sledge hammer. Don't quote me on this, but I believe that the Monoprice THX 16 has better low end performance, but the PB16 has more peak SPL..
I've been considering the psa s2112 and the s1813 as upgrades to my current pair of svs sb3000.
Nice one, Barrett. Those are some huge bass monsters in there. :-)
Great video.. can you do a top 6 list of best tower speakers under 5k for a pair? I love your channel because although your a audiophile your not snobbish about it and realize its all subjective. You also give your honest opinion especially when it comes to price for example if something cost 1k and another speaker cost 5k you will be honest and say this 1k speaker sounds better if it actually does. This is important cause lots of reviewers test out these 50k-1mill speakers and setups and lets face it thats just not ideal for the average listener. You dont need to spend that kind of money to make a system sound good..
Tech only goes so far the ears can only hear and accept so much. Its like 4k tvs are eyes can't even distinguish the difference from 1080p because our vision isnt good enough now they wanna make 8-16k tvs shits out of control they just trying to get consumers to spend more like if it cost more it means its better..
Outstanding list! Proud owner of a PAIR of PSA 3600i subs, and they bloody rock!!!
Thanks brother. YES! Nice pick my friend, PSA make some kick ass hard hitting subwoofers.
Have 2 of the FV25HP's, and for the price they are absolutely awesome! So sad they discontinued it.
@Spec Of Tech another suggestion:
a video about "cracy" or "unique" subwoofers. And I don't mean those with "just" high output.
Rather about Subwoofers with an high order enclosure, a new/unique concept or something like that.
For Example:
the Infrasonic Subwoofers from Ascendo (50 Inch!!!). where a two way subwoofer system (like two way bookshelf) comes to play
Rotary Subwoofers (look it up, I don't know how to explain quickly)
Perlisten D215s, Gene from audioholics talked about what's so special in a Video "The world's most accurate subwoofer"
A video like that probably wouldn't be a buying guide (so no price restrictions needed). I would love to see you explain the "special designs/concepts" behind those subs. It would be interesting, at least for me XD.
Good list... JTRs are monsters! I am more than happy with my PSA TV2112s.....The prices on some of these subs have just gotten insane! But yes , you need an under $2500 or $2k sub list...PSA has so many new versions its hard to keep up , but their new DVC 18's will probably top the price to performance ratio..Of course Rythmik FV18 is never one to sleep on , and Monolith is really coming around as well...Great time to be in the sub market , but prices are making it difficult....One question , No Funk or Deep Sea? Or do they fall into the rarity category?
Lol, PullOutChamp, love the name! I agree the FV18 is an amazing performer as well. Yeah the Funk and Deep Sea offerings are pretty niche, plus neither of them have a ported version that fit my list criteria. They both focus on sealed offerings in that price range. In addition to that, Deep Sea Sound lists everything as sold out, so they aren't really commercially available.
@Spec Of Tech The only way I can afford subs is to not have kids lol....But yes , forgot about DSS not being ported! Funk did end up making a ported sub correct?? But I can only imagine the cost on that thing !!
@@butcherben12 Lol kids are way to expensive these days. Funk did make a ported subwoofer, but it is well over the $5000 price range I gave myself for this video.
i have a pb 2000 pro, boy does that 4000ulf look juicy, especially a pair of them.
need to add in DiY. bring on the Devastators!
Great job & what kind of HDMI cable do you use? 😎👍
I use these HDMI cables, never have an issue with them.

One of the best audio video comparison videos on RUclips is the " speaker under 500/1k/5k ect" group
You could make all kinds of lists Barrett!
Great list! I think the SVS belongs in that list based on performance versus size. Very few wives like the 250lb dual sub cabinets and someone looking for solid all around movie bass in a smallish package at a decent price, SVS is a great option. It may not be the sub for the bass fanatics who want to level the foundation of their house, buy 90% of enthusiasts will be very happy with a pair of them in their theater.
Love the list idea, potentially one at a lower price range would be popular, especially since most want dual subs and $8-$10k is not doable for most.
Keep up the great work!
Absolutely, you are 100% right in my opinion, and that is why it was on my list.
I'm conflicted with SVS.
I've owned multiple SVS subs over the last 15 yrs or so and I'm not sure they offer the same value proposition anymore. I still own 2 today.
Many of us own processors that manage all of the EQ , or at least all of the EQ aside from the HPF, LPF inherent to the sub design itself.
I find SVS are incorporating more and more complexity that I don't think adds to the performance of the sub in this common scenario.
Most users need a power and LFE connection and that's it. High level inputs if you integrate with speakers for 2 ch.
As I've improved the speakers in my system I have found the SVS models aren't offering the clarity of bass I think I need. I describe them as being "bloated" in their sound.
@@michaelrobinson9643 SVS has focused their marketing strategy to lower to mid range setups that are not dedicated theater rooms. People that want decent sound on a budget that buy their fear from Best Buy and have entry to mid level AVR's. Their price point fits well against a decent Polk or Klipsch but they destroy them in performance and also have the ability to customize it to their room and preferences.
Anyone serious about home theater doesn't care about the app and is looking at performance alone, where SVS might meet their needs or they will look elsewhere or go the DYI route for house collapsing bass at a more affordable price.
These multi-use setups also have restrictions for aesthetics and subwoofer size is a huge factor and for the small size, SVS is head and shoulders ahead for the price.
Also keep in mind that while SVS has added all of this control with their app, it did not come at a higher price, or was basically a free add on to gain more customers that want to keep things simple. SVS is no longer a small direct to consumer company, they are jumping into the volume market where bells and whistles sell, whether you ever use them or not.
For the price, SVS is still very hard to beat, app or not
@@michaelrobinson9643even though I have ARC Genesis through an Anthem AVR, I prefer the control from miniDSP2x4HD to contour the response of my PB-3000s. Coupled with MSO, the filters and house curve allow for greater control than any AVR processor under $7k. I love the power and response of these PB-3000s. There could be better subs, but these work for me.
SVS subs might not have the best bang for buck, but they are damn gorgeous and manageable. I have a PB13 in our living room and it's almost like a piece of furniture. The rest of the subs are stronger, but clearly meant for dedicated theater rooms.
I have the FV25HP's sealed brother on order. Can't wait for my G25HP to arrive!
Nice choice my friend. I bet you are excited, it will no doubt be a performance beast.
How did your order turn out? Are you happy?
Your opening speak hits the mark 🤣 top 10 list usually are about under 1000us dollar well known brands with 300w power 🤣🤣. I really like my SVS SB 4000, but might change it to SVS PB16 Ultra at some point.
2) sterero integrity hs24s in a marty type enclosure, pro amp.
I would love to see a comparison between the Cap4000 and the TV42!
You and me both!
Ordered up 2 Cap4000's, coming in a couple months :D
Congrats man, you are going to be blown away, almost literally lol.
hi thanks for this video, I have an issue humming sound comes from Switch Mode Power Supply and also humming sound comes from my speaker after connecting the External Power Amplifier XPA 11 GEN 3 before using this External Amplifier I was connected with Marantz SR8015 and wasn't there this issue, I don't know how to solve this issue if I use power conditioner it may solve this issue or not because I'm planning to buy a ' Taga PC - 5000 ' Power Conditioner do you think it's going to solve this issue or not if you have also any suggestion I'll be appreciate that hope to assist me with it ASAP.
Very seldom with a power conditioner fix the hum issue. Have you contacted Emotiva regarding this issue? Is the hum from the power supply in the amp quite noticeable? It is common to hear a little hiss or buzz in speakers using a budget amp, but it shouldn't be very loud, you should only be able to hear it with your ear close to the tweeter. I suggest contacting Emotiva for their suggestions for their specific amp. You could try bypassing the ground prong on the amplifier to see if that quiets the sound, but that will bypass the ground, so it's at your own risk. You could also try running an extension cord from another socket and plugging in the amp, to see if that helps.
I KNEW IT!! THE CAP4000 IS KING!!!
Is the all new Dynaudio Focus 50 Active Wireless Speakers the best whole system at any price ?
Good question, if they decide to send me one for testing I will try to answer that for you.
Would love a video for subwoofers under $2500
Monolith 16
Good list of subs i wish i could afford them.
A pretty good list...
Nice list though I am surprised SVS made it onto the list over the HSU 15" ported subs
I got the Captivator 2400s which has slightly less output down low than the 2400ulf. Plenty enough for me, more than I’ll actually use and I think aesthetically it looks better than the ulf. That’s all opinion based but 2 end game subs none the less. I agree with this list 100%.
Great choice man. The 2400 does have a better look to it IMO as well. Thanks for the support brother, cheers.
@@SpecOfTech I wish I had enough time to have a channel… I definitely appreciate you keeping the content coming… I commute to the bay and live off my audio RUclips videos most of the time to kill the drive time… Home Theater is my main hobby and definitely appreciate those who give good testing, reviews and outlooks on improving my set up. Keep the great content coming brother. 👍🏼
@@JoshuaPeters3036 Well I am honored to be one of the channels you watch and trust...truly.
Have you had a chance to demo the psa tv21 ipal yet? I'm was wanting your opinion on that subwoofer.
No sorry, I haven't demo'd any PSA for quite some time. Tom seems to hate reviewers and won't send anything to them for review, it also appears he doesn't even like selling to reviewers. I doubt I will ever review anything of his ever again...but who knows...never say never I guess.
Yo I hit the subscriber button and like button for ya!
Much appreciated brother!
Hi Barret, in the speaker setup seen in the background of this particular video, what are those pls .. I like the beefy center center .. maybe you can enlighten me as to what I am seeing here .. thank you
That is the Legacy Audio Marquis XD center channel. Dual 12" woofers, 1 x 7.5" midrange and a 4" AMT.
Thanks
Barrett, have you been able to hear the PSA TV42? There seems to be some pretty negative reviews (Shane Lee) about the PSA subs bottoming out, etc and I’m wondering if they are truly in the league of JTR and Rythmik?
IMO, PSA is not in the same league as JTR for HT. PSA hit hard with their pro drivers, but don't come close to the low end authority of JTR. JTR hit pretty hard as well, but I think PSA may have them beat in that department. But not as big of a gap as the JTR beats the PSA in the low end.
@@SpecOfTech Thanks man!!
Curious if you considered the Legacy Goliath in your subwoofer journey? (Passive radiator but…given your front stage…)
I did have a look at them, but their output was not worth their price IMO. These JTR's will outperform the Legacy offerings by a significant margin. Legacy speakers are fantastic sounding though, they would be hard to beat for their price, unfortunately that doesn't remain true for their subwoofers.
@@SpecOfTech bingo. Thank you!
Finally a real list buy a real enthusiast not paid by companies to promote their garbage. I created a similar list recently and had SVS at the bottom as well. It's the gateway drug into the bass world, great marketing and customer service but performance is not in the big leagues...which is fine. Anyways, very well thought out list.
Yeah I saw your list on Instagram, another great list that people should pay attention to. You have had more subwoofers than most reviewers, your opinion on a subwoofers means a lot. We need more guys like you making lists on RUclips as well. There are so many bad lists out there, that is what inspired me to make this one. Thanks for the support on the video brother...cheers.
@@SpecOfTech Always man, love your channel. I think you are the closest enthusiast to my own heart. We both love reviewing new gear and change often. I have a huge install today, gaia feet, wires, new power conditioners...fun day lol.
@@MusclesAVS haha yeah, you are tough upgrader to keep up to 😜. I love the fact that you want to try things and listen to things yourself in your own room, definitely an enthusiast to my own heart. Those Gaia feet are a thing of beauty, what power conditioners did you go with?
The next upgrade for me is my electrical, I can't put it off anymore lol, these JTR's made sure of that.
@@SpecOfTech after talking to a bunch of people with far more knowledge I went with surgeX. I plug my amps directly into the wall and everything else into a surgeX.
Are these subs safe for a house?
I've taken my pb2000, (level matched to 75db during calibration) to 70 db at the beginning of edge of tomorrow and I thought my house was going to collapse.
Are these single digits Hz subwoofers honestly safe for a house? Is there and study done on this topic?
They are safe for the house, but I am sure overtime if you crank them up all the time it could cause damage to drywall etc.
I’m subwoofer shopping now. What would you all recommend for a 15x15 room?
That really depends on what you bass expectations are? Are you wanting to shake the room violently or just have good solid low end? Do you want infrasonics, or just good performance 20hz and up?
@@SpecOfTech I’m looking for good deep bass but nothing to crazy big. I currently have two 10s in the room.
@@czwhat328 I would look for a subwoofer with good performance down to about 15h or so. There are quite a few subwoofers out there that can do that at a reasonable price. Check out the SVS PB3000 - www.kqzyfj.com/click-100377643-14296628
Another great option is the HSU Research VTF-15H MK2. It doesn't have the app or same level of customer support as SVS, but still a great option.
Almost anything from Rythmik, PSA and JTR would definitely fit the bill as well, but the price starts to creep up.
Any recommendations for subwoofers just for music? That can go with standmounters
It would depend on what type of bass experience you want and the size of the room? To keep it simple and generic, I would recommend having a look at SVS subwoofers. Here is a link if you want to check them out: www.tkqlhce.com/click-100273883-13008591
They have several driver sizes and amplifier variations. They are good middle of the road subwoofer, with good looks and a handy bluetooth app. If you want something with more power then check out the SVS PB16 Ultra.
@@SpecOfTech thanks a lot 🙏
Have you heard the Devastator Horn subwoofer? how does it compare?
Yes I have heard of the Devastator GSG (DIY) subwoofer. I am not sure how they compare, I have never heard the Dev subwoofer. My guess is that the Devastator would have more max output 25hz and up based on its tune, but it will have less low end below 20hz than the JTR. I haven't seen actual numbers from the Devastator, so take that with a grain of salt.
Can I ask why the Legacy speakers are already up for grabs. You review other then delivery times was very positive whats changed since then
The sound quality of the speakers is not in question, I can't deny they sound fantastic. The main reason I am selling is because I have no desire to support or promote the Legacy brand. Legacy was incredibly disappointing in their customer support, and the QC of the Studio HD bookshelves was atrocious. The straw that broke the camels back, was the over 9 month wait for my side surrounds. I had asked for an ETA more than once and was never given one. Strangely enough, after I decided to cancel the order for side surrounds and sell the Legacy speakers, they contacted me that my side surrounds would be ready in 2 weeks for shipping. That was far too little, far too late. I hope that my experience is the exception, and I can't speak for other customers, but in my case, Legacy as a brand was incredibly disappointing. Which is really too bad, because their sound is phenomenal.
What driver is the 18" and 15" JTR? I'd be keen to know if it can be bought for a diy sub?
I believe the drivers are made by Eminence, but they are a custom design for JTR.
@@SpecOfTech Thank you Sir :)
I read later after posting that JTR use Fi brand drivers yet the authors of that weren't certain... Fi aren't a volume item as best I can tell with one guy running the show?
I guess my question is less what JTR use and more, What 15" or 18" driver(s) for 2 subs that perform like theirs and offer true to source bass with no overhang, bloat or delay... fast, on time and dynamic?
DA Ultimax seem popular but I'm unsure if tha'ts due to versatility or them being a superior performing driver.
I need to fill a 4600ft^3 space and "off the shelf" subs here in Australia are either not very good or too expensive... often both. Shipping is about $800 right now :( ... kills value!
You need to put this video in the 'Extreme Bass subwoofers' section on your RUclips page.
@Spech of Tech, have you ever tried the 'xtz 3x12' subwoofer?. Audioholics have a good review on their website,
I haven't tried that sub, I have read about it online though. It seems like a great option for a medium to large dedicated room. I don't think it would have enough for my non-dedicated room that is open to the house.
@@SpecOfTech from what I've read, it is superior to the svs pb 16 ultra, and even cheaper. Maybe you could do a review/comparison of the 2 subs, and maybe the xtz will claim the number 5 spot.
Hi spec of tech, I have a question about the pb16 ultra. I live in an apartment but I only have one neighbor connected to me will the pb16 give me.chest thumping bass or do I need something more because the living room is not huge but large enough don't know the footage 🤔 but maybe the pb16 will.be to much for an apartment? If you could provide your input on this I would appreciate it thanks 😊 🙏
For an apartment the Pb16 would be plenty, more than enough to tick off your neighbor really.
@@SpecOfTech thanks again I really appreciate all you do for us.
@@SpecOfTech i have one last question for you when you have a moment could you please let me know the difference between the pb16 ultra and the sb16 ultra. I don't really know who else to ask and I know how you love you're bass. 😊 I do know the sb16 ultra is sealed box but how do these 2 differ 🤔.
@@erosvinsol6725 The PB16 is ported, therefore larger and will have more output than the SB16. The SB16 is sealed, therefore smaller and will have a slower roll off but less output. If you are looking for the most output, get the PB16.
0:05 ten years ago when I looked up best home theater systems LMAO
Good list! Now having owned all the subs on this list except the rhythmic I can say without question PSA TV-42 vs JTR 4000ULF-ST are definitely deserving to be top of your list but I must add if you are looking for the absolute best SQ in a sub the PSA TV-42 wins that EASILY no competition that I have ever heard at this size range. But if you are looking for the best sub to destroy your foundation in your home while sounding good the JTR 4000ULF wins that contest EASILY as well. It's a no lose situation either way you get a awesome sub but unfortunately just remember you will have to deal with the extremely giant box it comes in.
Would you be kind enough to offer your thoughts on what "best SQ" means to you? I ask as I am very interested in replacing some loud but not very "true to source" subs and I'll either DIY or need to be very discerning about brand/model.
Consequenlty I'm very interested in the drivers these brands choose. There is no distributor for PSA here in Australia... so I'd be importing them or having to mimic their design so knowing the drivers would be super helpful :).
How about a PSB subsonic 6i that I bought on Facebook Marketplace for $50?
Of these Subs, do they all have chuffing issues when playing some really low frequencies. Shane mentioned he was having chuffing issues when playing the Edge of Tomorrow opening scene. So i was wondering if this is a consistent issue with ported Subs. Thanks!!!
I haven't owned all of these subwoofers personally. But I never had an issue with chuffing on the PSA TV3612. I did have some chuffing on the SVS PB16 Ultra when it was pushed hard. I have never heard or read any complaints of the JTR subwoofers having a chuffing issue either.
@@SpecOfTech ok thanks so much for the reviews and videos!!!
@@dubscee6472 No problem brother, thanks for watching.
Your intro is exactly what I think when I hear the robot voice.🙌
I just purchased the Focal Sopra no 1. Any recommendations for a sub that has good wife acceptance factor?
Sure I can make some recommendations. Are you looking for performance below 20hz? Would it be used for HT or just music?
Mostly HT. Below 20 would be nice. As long as it’s not so big the wife would throw me out.
@@midnight972002 Check out the JTR RS1, Rythmik F18, SVS PB4000 and PB16 Ultra. I would recommend the RS1 and Rythmik F18 at the top of the list. SVS subwoofers have a "prettier" finish though.
As a guy with a PSA TV2112...I really want to hear a JTR sub one day.
I really want to upgrade to the s42 ipal from PSA (X2).
But just for fun, what do you personally think is the big difference between the sound characteristics of PSA's dual opposing 21" sealed beast(s42 ipal)...vs your RS2's? Everyone always talks about the mid bass slam and how accurate the and tight the B&C drivers are(and as a tv2112 owner, I attest to that). But they also go well below 10hz with no effort. So they aren't lacking there. What other ways would you describe the difference personally?
Both are amazing subs, but there is something to be said for high excursion drivers. The PSA aren't high excursion, but the JTR drivers are. The easiest way for me to explain the difference is violence. The JTR subs are also clean and accurate, but more violent, especially at the low end. PSA have output in the low end, but they lack authority in the low end.
@@SpecOfTech hmm interesting take. Sound...and it's personalized nature...can make it difficult to pin point and define what you mean by output vs authority. Like, on paper, minus a few miniscule db's, you'd think if the output at a given hz is close, and both using high end parts and drivers... it means they are going to faithfully create said frequency in the same fashion. But perhaps high excursion and the little extra air it moves, makes a perceptible difference in not so much the sound, but the accompanying nuances of "feel". Or perhaps sound too. Perhaps this gets into all the audio theory of decay time and such...i dunno. Lol
Thanks for your input. I would love to hear a jtr sub one day. You are one province over from me and we have spoken privately a few times so perhaps if I am ever in your neck of the woods I could creepily bug you for a demo 😜
@@sporegazm Yeah, it's hard to know exactly what the difference is, but that is exactly what I felt when I had PSA. They had measurable output at low HZ, but not the same authority/violence, even at similar DB to other subwoofers I had.
Haha that could be cool to do a demo, but we would definitely need to be friends on FB or something first 😉.
@@SpecOfTech haha ya i left social media. I'm much to shy to show up at a strangers for something like that lol. So was just joking mostly.
But thanks for your input. Maybe I should save for a cap4000ulf and try it out
@@sporegazm I think you would love the JTR subs. The TV42 would probably be a different animal vs the TV3612's I had. The TV42 would have much more authority with dual 21's, would be my guess.
I don’t even know what you mentioned yet but just 15 seconds in I clicked like for the truth you said!! Lol
Thanks brother!
I have a pair of m-215's coming tomorrow. Where do these stand in comparison?
Sorry I had to change my response. I thought originally you had replied to my video on the JTR RS2's.
The Monolith M-215's are a great performing subwoofer, even with their price aside. I thought about putting them on the list, but every time I would look at them on Monoprice, they were sold out and unavailable. I see they are now in stock again, which is great.
The M-215 would be quite comparable to the JTR 2400 in output, but won't have the same performance at 10hz and down. The M-215 fall off a cliff at 12.5 hz in their extended mode.
The M-215 would outperform the PB16 Ultra, but I needed 1 ported subwoofer on the list that would have a higher WAF and app tuning capabilities. SVS has the best subwoofer with those benefits in mind IMO.
@@SpecOfTech Nice to hear they were considered in this comparison. I had a pair of the 16" monoliths for about a week. But sent them back after experiencing malfunction on both believe it or not. One had low output, the other made clicking sounds at rest.
@@SpecOfTech Fedex freight is on his way now to meet us down the road. Should have these m-215's switched on today👍
@@Dat_Sun Congrats my friend, I am quite certain you will love them, but keep me posted. I would love to hear your thoughts on them.
@@SpecOfTech I will probably make a short video of them in a few days. I was happy to see both subwoofer packages arrived in perfect condition, not a blemish on the packaging, Monolith also upgraded the packaging with reinforcement as well as lots of large plastic hand holds that work well. Really looking forward to getting them inside (huge job, I live on steep property in the Rockies at 9k feet.) I think I will upload to my other channel called Granby Homesteading if you or anyone cares to see updates on this pair of m-215's .
Barrett, what about the Monolith M215. Cheaper than the Pb 16 Ultra, way better below 20 hz than the pb 16 Ultra and $300 less!
That's another great option, and I agree it does have better performance. But, the main reason I put the PB16 on the list is because if it's relative small size compared to the other monsters and its beautiful aesthetics. It has a MUCH higher WAF than anything else on the list, and the Monolith. I definitely did consider the M215 for this list, but ultimately decided on the PB16 for those reasons.
Hey, I noticed you forgot to mention the BIC F12. 😝
lol that will have to be on the budget list.
If it were my decision, I would put the JTR captivator 2400 above the Rythmik, but you're making the videos, so it's up to you :). Even the "baby" ported captivator has performance that boggles the mind. My rattling windows can attest to that. The only thing that keeps me from buying more JTR subwoofers is the 4+ month wait time. 🙂
lol no kidding JTR, has some crazy performance in all their models.
Yeah long wait, I'm getting a pair of Funk Audio subs he's saying 4-6 months also
DEFINITELY JTR Cap. 2400 above the Rythmik. With the earlier cones I would not. With the current cones JTR uses - NO QUESTION = JTR wins this for me.
How much do you like the rs2’s
So far I am loving them. The only downside is that I have to upgrade my electrical now or I trip the break when I push them a little lol.
@@SpecOfTech shouldn’t be that much. Maybe around a grand max. I was meaning to do that in my situation also but my breaker don’t Tripp but the lights do dim drastically and it acts like it wants to. I can’t push them past a certain point it seems because of it . But that’s super loud
Very supportive of continued lists…and of robotic impressions of their lesser counterparts 😀.
Just wanted to clarify Funk’s omission from the list. Is it because the not commonly commercially available criteria, or does the output not compete in your mind?
lol I will be sure to work on my robot impression.
Funk didn't make the list because they don't have a ported subwoofer under $5000. Their least expensive ported is $6000 USD.
Ahhh, that’s right. Cheers.
And honestly, I think you nailed it with the impression. Keep em comin’! 👍
PB-16 gets too much hate . Glad to see it on this list. Has a fantastic finish and beautiful driver. Their customer service is second to none. That TV42 IPAL is so devastating
100% I agree with you. The PB16 isn't for the die hard performance enthusiast, that isn't what it's designed for. But it does a lot right, and you are 100% right, their customer service is the industry standard IMO. I have a new found appreciation for their service after my recent speaker purchase lol.
I didn’t realize the pb16 got any hate. None that I’ve heard anyway; but I do agree there customer support is second to know except klipsch maybe.
@@daveycrockett5738 Yes if you go into the owner forums on AVS for PSA, JTR, RYTHMIK, REL, etc you will hear how overpriced SVS is for the performance you get. SVS PB16 was my first intro into audiophile bass. Will always hold a special place in my heart.
@@keepingupwiththejones2933 well yeah but every product will get that criticism basically from certain people. Besides the little pricey price it’s a great product. Might not be the best value few things are but it’s an awesome product and I wouldn’t say it’s ridiculously overpriced maybe a slightly. Basically no hate except prize ya.
I agree with the hate don’t get me wrong I love svs and I have a 3.0 svs ultra towers and center but the subs are ridiculously overpriced for the performance plus the pb16 is outclassed by way cheaper subs for music for home theater sure it rocks but for me a sb16 ultra is 2200 before tax and for that price there is way better for the specs it has
They are all really nice and they def do the job I have always uses 10 inch or 8 inch subs they hit a lot harder
10" and 8" aren't a bad choice for music, but for HT they just don't have the jam needed. I think you would be surprised at how hard an 18" subwoofer can hit, I have a feeling you'd want some if you did ;). Thanks for watching brother.
TV21 Ipal should of been #6, it has over 2x the output of the PB16 ultra, almost a full octave more extension and cost significantly less. I wouldn't be surprised if it matches the JTR 2400. Its also very compact given the size of the driver. I would even take the FV18 over the pb16.
* note the pb16 should been an honorable mention given the high WAF, but in terms of pure performances it doesn't belong.
I agree there are many other subwoofers out there that have better performance than the PB16 Ultra. But I do want highlight that this list wasn't only based on performance. I wanted at least 1 subwoofer on the list that would appeal to your average consumer. If I make a list of all high priced, utilitarian subwoofers (low WAF), it would ONLY appeal to enthusiasts. That is why I discussed the PB16 being good for your average home theater, with good performance and high WAF. I originally had made the list with top 5, but sort of added the 6 position for the PB16, because I realized the list would only appeal to enthusiasts. You're right, I could have added some honorable mentions as well. Thanks for watching.
@@SpecOfTech i agree with the high WAF sentiment, is just feel that it is our responsibility as enthusiast to educate the average joe instead of them relying on advertisement and "influenced" reviews.
Great video, but on the side note
1) high WAF subwoofer list is a great video idea :)
2)Best single driver list subwoofers
3) best sealed subwoofers etc etc
@@marcgallant5270 All great suggestions, thanks Marc!
Did the ipal go up in price? It’s $3800, noticeably more expensive than a pb16
They now have the ipal-M models, identical performance but the cabs are imported from china vs made in house. $3299 @camzaro
Curious if you've ever heard the Paradigm Signature Sub 2? I understand it's not under $5000, but bassed (pun intended) on your previous history I expect you've heard it?
I wish I had an opportunity to hear the Sub2, but unfortunately I have not had the chance yet. Have you ever experienced it?
@@SpecOfTech no, just read some reviews. Thought maybe your Paradigm guy may have had one in his shop. From what I've read it would be on par with JTR.
Why no deep sea sound with SI driver? 🤣🤣
Does it matter if you mix and match subs
It does matter. That is because every subwoofer is tuned differently. If you are trying to mix subwoofers that are tuned differently you can get conflicts at certain frequencies and phase. They can be mixed successfully, but usually that will take REW and a minidsp to EQ them to work together.
@@SpecOfTech Okay good to know. I have SVS PB16-ULTRA SUBWOOFER I only have one and was thinking of getting a second.
@@asusbose I love the PB16's, one of the nicest looking subwoofers on the market. The easiest way to add a second subwoofer would be to add a second PB16 tbh.
@@SpecOfTech Yeah that’s what I am thinking of getting second one.
“@ number one we have this piece of garbage “ I lol’ed so hard
Lol glad you enjoyed the video brother.
Ok I like the list, but what about sealed vs ported!? The great debate.
Haha the age old question. IMO, it really depends on what you are looking for. If all things like the driver/drivers and the amp are equal, and only the enclosure is different, one being ported and the other sealed; the ported will always have more output. If your only determining metric is output, then ported is the way to go. They are more efficient and have less distortion generally speaking as well. If space is of concern and you want a slower roll off then sealed is a good option. Generally speaking sealed will have better group delay in the lower frequencies, that is where the stigma comes from that they are "cleaner". Whether or not you can hear that in the low frequencies is a whole other discussion.
Long story short there is not right or wrong answer, it really depends on what is best for you and your application. For me personally, if I have the room, I would always go ported. If I don't have the space I go sealed, I have never heard a difference in bass quality between the 2, I have only heard the differences in output.
When ya gonna get one Dare Audio S824? from China only 1000usd plus postage! Western owners and designers, they know how to do it.
I'll be honest, probably never.
GSG Audio offerings are missing from the list. Devastator with a 21” eminence or even a Marty 18”. Grant typically low WAF lol!
Those are some great subwoofers, but this list was all about prebuilt commercially available subs. Lol and yeah, the WAF is pretty low on those too.
@@SpecOfTech they’re offering completed subs now! Also a Dual 21 which we’ll see how it lines up with PSA and JTR. Such a fun hobby, thank you for your content!
@@fenswann That's right, now that you mention that I do remember seeing something about them offering completed subwoofers. I just had a look, and DAMN those are massive lol. They should be able to rock the whole block!
9:40 base clip….beginning of edge of tomorrow -right?
haha you got it brother, I love that demo for subs.
Now, How about a top 6 sealed subwoofer list!
I was thinking the same thing my friend, thanks for the input.
Why does nobody talk about the xtz 3x12?
They aren't common in North America. I would love to check one out some day though.
How about a list of subs that people could realistically put in their living room without sacrificing too much on space or positioning? I mean, yeah these are the top 5 subs when it comes to all out power, but not everyone who is into home theater has a dedicated room or space for 2 mini fridges next to their sofa.
I will try to work on that list for the future, thanks for the suggestion.
Jtr 4000 ulf ftw period.
In what world would there be a market for such high price powered subs. I have 5 powered subs in my 7.1 stereophonic surround system none in that price range.
There is a fair sized market out there for high output and low distortion home subwoofers. The HT market loves subwoofers like this.
Damn my Bose sub didn’t end up on the top 6 maybe top 50 😆
Lol, maybe on the next list!
No REL subs on the list? Talk about sexy looking and on point accuracy.
I 100% agree that they have looks to kill. The issue I have had in the past, is finding any measurements or output data for them. In addition to that, they seem to mostly produce sealed subwoofers, this list was specifically for ported subwoofers. Maybe they can make their way onto a future sealed list...thanks for watching.
I was dying at the beginning of this video… it’s like who is pumping out those robot top 5 lists and for what reason? You should do best value sub lists… HSU makes fantastic subs and under $1000, they aren’t quite to the level of subs displayed here but the HSU ULS-15mk2 and VTF-15H can probably hang pretty close to the SB16 & PB16.
Since you have big speakers why not go with big movie screen and a projector
I only sit about 6.5 - 7 feet away from the screen, the 77" OLED is perfect for my seating distance. One day I would like to try a UST projector with a 100" screen though.
@@SpecOfTech ust projector will work good for you now
“At number one we have this piece of garbage”. Lmao because it’s true. Those lists drive me crazy
Barrett is a bassbot🤣😅
lol, I should do my next one as a speech to text bot.
Seaton Sound
Just because a subwoofer has the same driver that you've experienced doesn't mean that you actually understand what a difference model sounds like. There different models for a reason and the main reason is always sound quality and change in amplifiers and box dimensions. Just because you have, or have had the little brother or bigger brother of a subwoofer has absolutely nothing to do with understanding subwoofers you never actually heared.
Monolith 16
I have 2 PB16s and also tested the Monolith dual sub. They wouldn't even come close to appearing in this list. They are sloppy and loose, so disappointing.
@@tkcdac was it the 16? Cause I can tell you it's not "loose" the group delay is insanely fast
@@tkcdac I can also tell you that the pb16 will start chuffing long before the Mono 16
@@tkcdac monolith 16 “THX”is a different sub and a different breed. Would wipe the floor with a few of these subs. No sub can match the price for performance. And with some of these subs on this list you can get two for the price of one with some money left over for a steak dinner
It cracks me up every time he says about...aboat lol You Canadians are a trip.. favorite Canadians are the Trailer Park Boys, Bubbles followed by Ricky and Gulian.. Don't worry you rate above that pretty boy Ryan.. he's my least favorite Canadian
How is this a 2024 video if it’s from two years ago?
Because this placement guide still applies to this year. Thanks for watching.
@@SpecOfTech (best subwoofers under $5000 video) fair enough. Still a good video too. I happen to be considering upgrading to a pair of JTR 2400s from my Rythmik FV 15 HP instead of getting another one.
Number 1 was not showing at all lol.
“Only provide vibration and sensation”
People pay thousands in kickers for what you can get with a decent sub.
What no love for the monolith thx 16?
Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with the Monolith subwoofers at the moment. I have no doubt the Monolith 16 is a fantastic performer, I just wanted to keep this video about subwoofers brands I have had experience with or owned personally. I would love to get my hands on the Monolith 16 one day though.
If my Rythmik FV18 isn't on this list I am unsubscribing😅🤣
lol Sorry man, it is too inexpensive for this list. But that is a good thing, it has killer performance and costs less😜.
So why include the PB16? When the FV18HP is better performing?
@@legendarymark112 my guess would be the DSP of the PB16 Ultra and WAF have placed it on the list. Rythmik requires a little knowledge and skill to dial it in . SVS is generally a little more user friendly.
@@legendarymark112 Good question, I gave the reasons in the video. I wanted 1 in there that appealed to aesthetics, not to mention it's other versatility benefits. It's more for the average HT consumer, I had to have 1 in there that appealed to them as well. After all, I did say that everyone has a different opinion as to what is the best and why. It wasn't ALL about performance. Other wise I would have to call it the top 6 Best Performing Ported Subwoofers.
@Spec Of Tech Alright yep, fair enough 👍For those where that matters, or the partner is in control that would certainly be a factor lol.
